Horror Kills at the Weekend Box Office: Who Won the Battle of Death vs Myers?

The numbers are in and Death has officially beat the living crap out of Michael Myers as The Final Destination took the top spot at the weekend box office with an estimated $28,335,000. Rob Zombie's Halloween II was even beat by Quentin Tarantino's Inglorius Basterds taking in an estimated $17,405,000 for the #3 spot at the box office. What's impressive is that horror accounted for nearly $45m at the box office showing just how powerful our genre is. Too bad two R-rated movies had to go head-to-head and split the take. Did you see either movie this weekend? Then click either title above to write your own review and tell all of BD what YOU thought.

i knew FD was going to win. Inglorious Basterds should have beat both because that film was excellent.

THIS IS BULLSHIT!

the majority of people were let down by the first one so its no surprise it didn't do well.

Well I definitely think the better movie won. I had the chance to see both over the weekend and Rob Zombie's view of Michael Myers just isn't what I think of when I think of Myers. I think a boy who goes crazy who comes from a perfect beaver cleaver-esque family like in the original is much scarier than a boy who has every rite to be fucked up since his family was so fucked up. Neither movie was great, but TFD was definitely better than Halloween 2 in my opinion, but there is no doubt that the 3D gimmick helped TFD out some and it was in a few more theaters than H2. I guess this won't be the Final Destination afterall lol.

I wouldn't quite say "powerful"-this type of thinking is where Hollywood has failed in the last number of years because it propagates a "take the money and run" mentality. Rather than worrying about being #1 at the box office, the producers and makers should concentrate on making quality films that have legs. Both are franchises with built in audiences, going up against movies that have been out for at least a few weeks. While the numbers aren't terrible, I'm sure you'll find the second week takes to drop as much as 60-75%, just like the Friday the 13th remake. If it were REALLY powerful, then it wouldn't slip as much and maintain some momentum, but unfortunately, Rob Zombie fails to realize that putting his hillbilly spin on stuff narrows his target audience significantly. While I've come to believe a good majority of producers and films aim at the lowest common denominator, Rob Zombie manages to do the unthinkable in that his film actually manages to appeal to people in a sub-category of that-the lowest uncommon denominator.

...soo.. is this the end of The Weinstein Company..? I hope not.. but they were REALLY laying all their cards out on Halloween II... it might still make money.. 17 million isn't BAD.. just, not great.. I hope, for their sake, it does better overseas and stays somewhere in the top 10 for a while...

lords of salem your right. cause halloween was about a guy in a mask who kills people, and halloween 2 was about a guy in a mask who kills people, with a white horse.

Lords of Salem.. What happens in every Halloween movie? Oh, that's right. Myers goes around slaughtering anything that gets in his way.. That isn't repetitive at all!

There only hope is if TFD has a BIG drop in audiences.

I think FD's gross had more to do with the almost double ticket price than the actual attendance. That's really not a fair assesment when compairing who Tops the box office, but whatever. Basterds came in second? Wow...H2 is kinda surprising considering the sucess of the first, but it's the backlash of the first that put H2 in a bad position, plus quick bad reaction to H2..shit spread like wild fire of bad reviews. Hope Zombie takes this as a sign to drop his comfort zone and really try something different for himself with THE BLOB.

While I will always stand firm that H1 is a flailing piece of dog-shit, I found H2 to be monumentally superior. Sure, there were some missteps in this one for sure, but the good outweighed the bad. No, Daeg, no LOVE HURTS, and less Malcolm=better film. As for box office... H1 brought in 26 million its opening weekend, this one fell to 17. Yikes.

Too bad for HALLOWEEN 2 that the Movie has not even a Startdate in most European Countries: neither England nor Germany have Startdates for Rob Zombies Movie while THE FINAL DESTINATION is opening next Week in Europe...

I love how just because Mike has a beard and it takes walks through woods hes automatically a Hillbilly. The Horse is a symbol, nothing more, it didn't REALLY exist. Had he jumped on that fucker and started riding around like John Wayne, then'd I'd be all for the HIllbilly comment lol. But ya put a beard on someone and everyone flips the fuck out, why not say he looks more like a Viking then a Hillbilly? It's just a goddamn beard haha

Very happy about this news. Zombie, your raping of the Halloween movies have come to the end. Just shows us all how limited these remakes are. Two movies and their done, you won't get 8 sequels out of them anymore. Those days are dead.

GGoblin31
1:13pm, August 30, 2009

My hope now (and don't believe the folks who whine that Zombie is the only reason we're getting Halloween movies right now--this franchise is lucrative regardless of who's behind the camera), is that we get a couple of years off from Myers and Haddonfield, then someone comes in--ignores Zombie's 2-film venture, and takes the franchise back to its roots.

They were both terrible films

GGoblin31, i totally agree with you: I think it would be great if for example the French Guy who did MARTYRS would do an updated HALLOWEEN-Version in a few Years... ignoring the Rob Zombie-Version and doing a NEW take on it while staying more true to the Original!

GGoblin31

Casio-- While I'm not a fan of rebooting AT ALL, I don't see any other way of brooming these two under the carpet and taking it back to the SHAPE stalking suburbia. I guess that's why people do this for a living, because I can't for the life of me figure out where to go from here.

The_Bark
1:28pm, August 30, 2009

I'm sorry, but I would just as soon have no more remakes, reboots, sequels, etc., and open the doors to more opportunities such as films as Martyrs. The problem is, until people, and that means FANS, of horror stop buying into this crap, Hollywood is going to keep serving it to you hand over fist with diminished creative returns each and every time. Has it really come to people needing to be labeled crack whores to understand this? It's like people become addicted to something, and once you're caught up in it, it's all you want-no matter how bad it is because you can't see straight. All the while, the ones pushing you into whoredom, take your money and run... reinvest a little bit of it and sell you the same packaged shit all over again. It's not that Hollywood's run out of ideas and can't turn out a decent film anymore. It's why bother when they've got everybody sold on making shitty films. Until people stop watching the drivel they turn out, and it remains a winning formula (i.e., makes money for them), why should they care what you think?

I think its time to go back to the original Halloween series now that Rob Zombie is done. We need a Halloween 9 that follows Halloween Resurrection. We need a story that follows Jamie's son considering he would be a teenager by now. Or a story revolving around Laurie's son John. Theres your Halloween 9 & Halloween 10

Ok,u guys feel TFD won because of 3d,but why did Basterds beat H2?Let me give u the real reason. After Zombies remake a clear split with the legion of Halloween fans, therefore with the release of H2 a split in the box office .Now with another split if Zombie tries to do part 3(not going to happen)about 9mil gross opening weekend,if hes lucky.Im so glad the true Halloween fans spit back at Zombie this go around.Hilarious!

I love the guys who try to talk about Zombies originality.A remake of the Blob should finally shut these guys up.Looks like Zombies pathetic film career is just about over.
