Anne Rice Comments on Downey Jr. Lestat Scoop, More Info!

Heading into the weekend Bloody Disgusting hit you with the monster news that Robert Downey Jr. was in talks to play Lestat Du Lioncort in Universal's reboot of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. Before we dive into official word from Rice, we learned over the weekend exclusively that the plan is to first adapt The Vampire Lestat, the second novel in the adult vampire franchise. Now, beyond the break you can read what Rice had to say about our breaking news.

Anne RiceAfter reading our news here on Bloody Disgusting, website BSC got in touch with author Anne Rice who talked a bit about the possibility of Downey Jr. in the role and addresses those complaining that Downey Jr. is too old ('cause he's not).

"I'm delighted to comment. First off, I cannot confirm or deny the rumor. I have not received official word as to the truth of it yet," she tells the site, although Bloody Disgusting can in fact confirm the validity of our story.

"But I can say without hesitation that I love Robert Downey Jr. and I think he would make a fabulous Vampire Lestat. He is a major actor, a powerhouse of talent and personality, and he evinces an irrepressible and seductive charm. He would bring great energy and skill to the role. I would love to see this happen. I've loved Robert Downey Jr. ever since I saw him in Restoration years ago, and I thought he was magical and powerful in Iron Man. -- So I hope the rumors are true. - I've posted on my Facebook "fan" page saying pretty much the same thing.

"Some are saying he is too old to play the part," she continues. "This is absolutely not true. He is quite youthful. Besides, Lestat is a man when he is made into a vampire. A twenty year old man in the 18th century is the equivalent of an older man today. Age just shouldn't be an issue here, not with an actor of this scope and charisma. - I'm thrilled at the prospect that this rumor might be true."

After Queen Of The Dammed I don't believe many people will give a damn about this dragged out pointless book to movie trilogy

He IS too old for the role, but I do think he will do a good job none the less. Besides, if he could play an African American character, why not a young one? ;)

i think it's awesome that he will be playing Lestat... i think too he's a little old... but you never know with the cinema magic. And he'll be able to make us forget that anyway

If you ask me, they should just remake Interview With The Vampire. There remaking everything else. RD Jr, is just too damn old, they need somebody who's 20 something or early 30's. I would like to see the Vampire Lestat as a movie, that would be awesome. Queen Of The Damned needs to be remade since they screwed up the story. These 3 would make an awesome trilogy if done right.

yeh I really like Rob but I like to see fresh faces and I think these kind of roles can really jump start an up-n-coming actors career, same as putting Bale in T4, I'd like to see some new faces..

Oh God, this has just made my year. I don't think they'd screw this movie up though, I think that whoever's involved in this project would have learned from the mistakes that the other movies made. Though don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved Interview with the Vampire, everyone that worked on that project did a marvelous job, but queen of the damned was just... It wasn't that awful, but as a hard core fan I must say I was very disappointed... A major part of adapting a book into a movie is to stick to as much details (of the book) as possible no matter how long the movie ends up being, in my opinion. As for the casting choice of Robert Downey Jr. as Lestat, I think it's a marvelous idea. When you're choosing an actor to portray a certain character, especially since this character is very well described in the book, that it's best to go for an actor with talent, and Robert Downey Jr. has that talent, and if he isn't playing Lestat, well then I really do hope that they choose the right cast, and stick to the story, choose the right set for every scene they shoot, get the costumes and make up right, etc. I wouldn't mind waiting for this movie knowing that it is in good hands, and I truly hope that this movie is made. I have such high hopes for this one. Anne Rice is a precious gem, may she live a long, healthy life. She has given us such a great gift with the books alone, and I eternally grateful. Bah, I just love her so much :3 really I do. Neon Queen

I don't give a damn who plays Lestat at this point, as long as this movie gets some attention off of those god-awful Twilight movies......

First he gets Sherlock Holmes, now Lestat?

If anyone should play Lestat in this movie, it's Peter Murphy, he's really the only choice.

Yes, some new faces please. I still disagree with the idea of Robert being Lestat.

I may come round to the idea of RDJ playing Lestat (he's a wonderful actor and full of likability too) but I would have perhaps preferred some new blood, so to speak. Gaspard 'Hannibal Rising' Ulliel was my personal fave choice for the role.

Well here is the problem Robert yes I agree a little to old, but he still would be good in it. If you go to young you have the problem of an actor "haming it up". Example Stuart Townsen, or whatever his fucking name is. Personally I think that Matthew Goode would do a great job in that part. I do think that with these films they should shoot back to back no sense in waiting years between and everyone getting older. Especially with a billion books in the series.

Dude, Robert Downey Jr wouldn't make a good Lestat. No way. Johnny Depp would be perfect; he would kick ass as Lestat. He'd be perfect. I'm not kissing JD's ass niether... U all know he would.

They already ruined this franchise with queen, they should have just used John Davis to play him. Watching that fool Stewart Townsomething to lip synch that wicked voice was hard to watch. And why not Tom Cruise to take the role back? He's not doing much these days.

Ok if RDJ is not to old and Tom Cruise is about the same age, just bring Cruise back. Then we can all forget that townguy like it was all a bad dream.

I wish someone would make a movie based on her "Mayfair Witches" series. "The Witching Hour" was probably one of the best books I have ever read.

brooklynpsycho

So damn true, if you say RDJ is not too old, might as well bring back Tom Cruise. I prefer Tom over Robert any day as Lestat. He was awesome in Interview.

Emile Hirsch is looking very Vampirey these days with his long hair he would be great.

Wow, that response from Rice is overwhemingly positive. Take that Tom Cruise!!! If they are planning on an adaptation of the 2nd book please don't make it a dogs breakfast like they did with QOTD

Rocky Horror

I think that Anne Rice is blinded by her admiration of the actor and probably hopes that an actor like RDJ will bring a better production, director etc. for the movie than a no name young actor playing Lestat would. Anyway, we all have already said that RDJ is a great actor but still he has not the looks for Lestat (age, colors etc). Finally, I agree with those posts above that say that if they want to bring RDJ to the role, then there no reason not to bring back Tom Cruise who is of a similar age and that can tie the movie better to "Interview with the Vampire". Also, bring back Neil Jordan!!! Company of the Wolves and Interview with the Vampire rock!

Biohazard

Anne, Anne, Anne...I can't believe it! WES BENTLEY, GASPARD ULLIEL, IAN SOMMERHALDER, TOM CRUISE, STUART TOWNSEND,TRAVIS FIMMEL and probably a whole bunch of young, good-looking French and British actors are ALL better choices than ROBERT DOWNEY.... O.K. ladies...come out wherever you are and let us know who YOU want. Gay and Bi guys...Lestat is YOUR Icon ...who should it be? Anyone is entitled to their opinion, but it's women that made TWILIGHT such a success and Lestat IS the first Bisexual Antihero ever! But you don't have to be that way to find him interesting.
