Anne Rice's 'Vampire Chronicles' Returns, Who is Lestat?!

We've been scrambling all week to confirm the following report, especially since it came from a very reliable source and is insanely logical considering the popularity of vampires these days. I guess something good has come from the success of Twilight as Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively that Universal Pictures is looking to restart Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, which tells the tale of the vampire Lestat Du Lioncort (through his narration), a nobleman-turned-vampire in the late 18th century. No word yet on how they plan on unrolling this franchise, but we did find out who they are talking with to replace Tom Cruise and Stuart Townsend. Read on for the skinny.

We have confirmed this afternoon that ROBERT DOWNEY JR. is in close talks to play the vampire Lestat in Universal Pictures' The Vampire Chronicles, a newly rebooted franchise based on Anne Rice's popular novels.

Lestat appears as a major character in both motion picture adaptations of The Vampire Chronicles novels. In Neil Jordan's 1994 film adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, he is portrayed by Tom Cruise. In the 2002 film adaptation of Queen of the Damned, he is played by Stuart Townsend.

The Vampire Chronicles is a series of novels by Anne Rice that revolves around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French nobleman made into a vampire in the 18th century.

sorry, downey jr is too damn old to play Lestat, Hell just get Cruise to play him if that's the case. Otherwise Def find someone younger. Lestat was in his 20's when he was turned

Great news about the new movie(s)...not quite so thrilled with Robert Downey Jr. playing Lestat. He really is too old to be Lestat and he already has a franchise to keep him busy. Hopefully this will turn into a new series of films and the producers can't be at the mercy of his busy schedule. They should get some hot newcomer or "discovery" that will be THANKFUL for the role and do it justice.

OMG! I am peaking out! RDJ could bring the smarm and sarcasm to Lestat that Cruise didn't quite hit. Please if its true let it be better than the last abomination, whoever is starring in it! www.musingcontinuum.com

Downey is talented but as others have said, he's a tad too old. I would love to see a faithful adaptation of The Tale Of The Body Theif.

Nothing against Robert Downey JR I can see him play lots of roles but a vampire isnt one of them

Ummmm... No... I hope to God this s a rumor... I LOVE Robert Downey Junior, dont get me wrong, but so far there are only two people who have qualified themselves to play Lestat and those two are Hugh Penaro and Tom Cruise... Robert Downey Junior is too old and you can bet your ass the Anne Rice fans are gonna be calling for Tom cruise... Also if he DOES get the role... I hope to GOD they at least get his hair and eye color right, there was nothing more upsetting than Stuart Townsend's screwed up appearance as Lestat Also, I hate to sound even more negative but its spelled Lestat De Lioncourt... De not Du XD

i don't like Robert Downey Jr. I think this would be a TERRIBLE casting decision. He is too old, in tooo many films right now, and doesn't have what it takes to portray Lestat. He should be worrying about the awful looking Sherlock Holmes and that Iron Man crap than trying to get into this. Terrible. Just terrible. There are more hot in demand YOUNGER actors out there that would be nice for the role. Not him. When they put a big name actor that is hot in the moment it is almost as if they are telling us the script is terrible or the movie isn't gonna be that good.

Well, normally I'd think this is pretty bad casting, but he is a great actor, and no one could see him as Iron Man either, and no one saw Heath Ledger as the Joker, sooooo...we'll see.

Robert Downey Jr. is a good actor but he doesn't fit the role of Lestat. Lestat is supposed to be in his very early twenties in the books. If this becomes a franchise,Robert Downey'll be getting older. He is a wrong casting choice. Other than that I hope they do as good a job as Neil Jordan did with his version of "Interview".

He definitely does not fit the part. Great actor, but too old like everyone else says. And also Lestat needs to be more attractive too. If I was being seduced by Lestat, Robert Downey Jr. would clearly not do it for me. And I'm just saying.

Armand maybe, but not lestat

I hope this is a joke. I'd love to see more Rice's stories adapted to film, and I like Robert Downey, Jr. But he is no Lestat! Young, brazen, aristocratic Frenchman...the "brat prince"... I can't see him pulling that off. I love Rice's early books, and the 'Vampire Lestat' is one of my favorite books. If he get's picked for Lestat, it just shows that they have every intention of fucking it up like they did with the casting for 'Queen of the Damned.'

While we would love to see our favorite vampires return to the silver screen, please bear in mind that this is only a rumour and should be viewed as such. Mr. Downey is an accomplished actor and never fails to entertain however I must say that I encourage further searching for a more "appropriate" performer for the role of Lestat deLioncourt.

WTF? Serioulsy, has Hollywood become SO short of original ideas, that they have to remake ABSOLUTELY everything? While I applaud a reboot of the series, I hope that each film will remain true to the novels, and not bedome some kind of hack and paste bastardized version like the last film. As I know that this picking of Downey is still in the rumour stages, I would hope that whoever is casting the new films would have at least read one of the books, or at the very least read a character description. Hollywood has a knack for going with a big name actor/actress that is popular at the time, instead of appropriate casting. Would this mean that Lestat would now be a womanizing, swaggering alcoholic that builds weapons for the government?

First person I thought of was Leonardo Dicaprio

AlterRed

Perfect choice if they are making Tale of the Body Thief. Bare in mind, Lestat spends most of the movie as a man in his late thirties!

If Robert Downey Jr. was younger I'd be extremely excited about this because he has the personality and the acting skills to be a great Lestat. Still, I can't think of someone to play Lestat. After Cruise and that other guy whose name I can't even bother looking for, I'm skeptical about someone being good enough to play that role. I really want to see who they choose to play Armand. There MUST be a good Armand...

I'm not sure I see Downey Jr. as Lestat, but I'd rather have a quality actor like Downey Jr. giving it a try and have it be a respectable film than have the movie turn out like that Queen of the Damned nonsense with a crappy Lestat.

bangor09

I was on the same page as most of you about Downey being too old (one of my favorites actors, though), but then again, AlterRed made a very good point... I for one wish to see The Vampire Lestat on the big screen on it's PROPER form, not as in QOTD, but The Tale of the Body Thief was rumored to being the next one on film, so I guess We will have to wait...

profesionalpervert

i have to say i'm a downey fan, but i really don't see him as lestat at all...he's talented, but does anyone really think he can pull off playing what is arguably the greatest vampire ever?

realsolution#9

IWTV is a great film and did the book proud... as did Tom Cruise who made an excellent Lestat. QOTD on the otherhand was a complete mess, although Townsend did display some nuiances of the character which Cruise did not. Whilst Downey Jr is a great actor, I'm afraid I really cannot see him as Lestat and if we must go down yet another reboot route, then please make The Vampire Lestat and do that book justice or Memnoch the Devil.
