B-D Readers Raving Over 'Orphan', Genre Looking Strong

This has been a truly exciting end of summer for horror, considering the competition. With all of these big budget studio "summer movies" hitting theaters, our genre is proving its strength at the box office. With A Perfect Getaway hitting theaters this Friday, that gives you guys the option of checking out one of three genre films this weekend. While Freestyle Releasing's The Collector made an impressive impact with such short lead time - and with no big names attached - Dark Castle's Orphan is about to cross $30m and has been impressing the majority of B-D readers. Of 63 user reviews, the psycho-child thriller is averaging a 4.5/5 Skull rating. Do you agree? Go forth and write your own review and tell all of B-D what YOU thought. Check out our review page to write your thoughts on other pic, your thoughts will hit the top right of the front page here on B-D and will be immortalized in our database.

Orphan was awesome! I loved the twist and the 'seduction' scene!

Orphan rocked. It was something different and was twisted. I love the performances and the director has deff upped his game since House of wax.

How is bombing at the box office, even after tons of tv spots and other promotion, impressive?

Why did this tank in the box office, so sad. Orphan is so amazing. I saw it twice. All my friends didn't want to watch it, but they fell for Esther too. I hope it becomes a classic anyways, next to Rhoda and Damien. I mean there are so many movies that wee bad in the box office but was still garnered or registered as classic.

Orphan was amazing, and I can't wait for the blu-ray. Quite the surprise, that movie was, at a time when movies have been pretty bland and overhyped.

Yes I agree! Orphan was very good! It was given the top shelf treatment and it shows. It should have actually done better than it did.

Orphan was bad-ass! Wasn't even anticipating this flick into a week or so before release. When I 1st saw the commercial I thought 4 sure it would be pg-13. Saw the twist coming, but the film was so refreshingly mean spirited I didn't mind. Wish it came out early or mid Oct, so it could of had potential for a larger audiance. Good movie, & this is coming from a person that hates "evil kid" movies.

Traumahound00 I'm sure Orphan didn't bomb.If Drag Me To Hell was made for 30 million dollars, then this surely could have been made for no more than 20-30 million. Therefore it did well. If your idea of a sucesful box office hit is at least 100 mill or more you are dead wrong. As long as it makes more than it was made for it was successful. It's certainly better than Imagine That, Terminators Salvation, Land of the Lost and so on.

Wish I could afford 2 see it. It sounds so fuckin Awsome!!!

When you consider that Orphan probably had a budget of 10-15 million, it's hardly a bomb. Horror movies USUALLY don't do outstandingly well at the box office after all. Plus, you have to consider the R rating.

Saw this friday, you want to know why horror films don't always doo good a the box office? Check THIS out: One of my local cinemas (vue in basingstoke, england) friday 7th August 17:45 20:20 23:00 saturday 8th August 17:45 20:20 Sunday 9th August 17:45 20:20 Monday 10th August 17:45 20:20 Tuesday 11th August 17:45 20:20 Wednesday 12th August 17:45 20:20 23:00 Thursday 13th August 17:45 20:20 Opening weekend!3 on opening day, and the wednesday, 2 on the others?! And the reason? Because it's a 15 certificate and a horror film, it WON'T do well! This has to be in the top 3 best 'evil kid/s' films EVER! and it's in my top films of the year so far too. I had reservations when i saw the trailer. I thought they had given too much, but i was unbelievably surprised. The performance by Isabelle Fuhrman(ester), and Aryana Engineer (max) were stunning. I know B/D gave DOROTHY MILLs a harshish review, but like the performance of Jenn Murray (Dorothy Mills) these two have such a future in films ahead of them. And that someone saw THAT particular twist coming, you must of been psychic, because, yeah everyone knew there was a twist, but like that? that was genius. And the think, this film came from DARK CASTLE Entertainment AND the guy who did GOAL 2 and HOUSE OF WAX remake?!

I thought Orphan was a great movie...the only thing I wished was that they would had gone into Ester's past just a bit more (maybe some flashbacks ala Stepfather with Terry Quinn) It would have been nice to see more gore from her past. But all in all I felt it had a good, chilling feeling to it.

I'll see this one in september, thats the release month here in Mexico. I don't care about the boxoffice, if it's good then it's going to do a killing on DVD & Blu-Ray, becoming a classic in the end.
