Update: 'Happy Birthday to Me' Goes 3-D?

Update: We're being told the film is NOT at Lionsgate and that the rights holders are looking to remake this in 3-D. We'll update you when something more official comes in. We broke the news last April that a remake of Happy Birthday to Me was in the works, but that was the tip of the iceberg. Today we learned a little bit more info that might get a few of you excited. After the success of My Bloody Valentine 3D, we're being told Lionsgate has decided to get behind the remake of the classic 80's film and will also produce it in 3-D, instead of moving forward on a MBV:3D sequel (lame). In the original, Virginia is proud that she belongs to a clique. But before her 18th birthday, a grueling set of murders take place and her friends are the ones who are falling prey. Could it be her? She suffers from blackouts due to a freak accident one year earlier. We soon learn the truth behind her accident and what is going on...

Great, if they keep the original film's motive, morons can claim that it was stolen from Scream.

Happy Birthday to Me was a pretty awesome little movie. Hope they don't ruin it but, at the same time, the ending's been ripped off a bunch (Drive Thru for example) so they'll probably shake it up a bit. Be cool to see in 3D.

I love the original. Can't wait to see how a remake comes out. And My Bloody Valentine was the best horror movie I've seen all year. Seeing as how the Happy Birthday remake is from Lionsgate, I hope they make it as fun as MBV was.

Thankyou. Some positive remake news. This is one i know i will enjoy especially since Lionsgate are helming it. And in 3D!! WOW! It could use an update too, anyone remember that crappy static electrocution effect??

I might not be to funny to some, but at least i will have the 10 dollars in my pocket after yet another piss poor remake is made and lazy studios get fatter from hard working fans .....Dont you as a horror fan think you deserve something fresh and original? .... I DO!

I can honestly say that I'd check out this redux simply for the fact that it's such an underdog in the horror genre. It's flicks like this and Mother's Day that I say "Go for it. Remake it"

I love the original and yes it bothers me that my precious 80's slashers are all getting remade. I just really hope that LIONSGATE releases the original on DVD...Uncut, Original or better cover art, original score etc.

Never seen the original so better hop to it. I just dont get Lionsgate. MBV 3D was a success, it made healthy box office and received good reviews but they wont do a sequel but are happy to churn out Saw part 36 !?!

um.....no!!! you can't remake this movie!!?? wtf i am sick of big budget companies that think they can go bigger or better than the original!!! think up your own ideas!! leave the teen horror market to hot topic!!!!

I liked the original, but I'm not positive how I feel about this. I haven't even seen MBV yet. I SHOULD give it a chance, but it honestly looks brutal.

If this means a new DVD release with the original soundtrack and special features like interviews with the producers (they are featured on the MBV special edition) and cast, and maybe even a commentary, than I'm all for it! And please change the cheesy, tacky cover art that was on the 2004 release. If anyone hasn't seen this yet, do NOT buy the DVD that is out there now. It's awful and a disgrace. Wait until the new one comes out or get it on iTunes/Amazon Video on Demand because that has the original music. This film is one of my horror favorites next to the original Black Christmas and Curtains. It deserves to have first class DVD treatment instead of what Sony put out 5 years ago. HBTM came across as being more sophisticated than the dozens of other horror films during its time and leaned more toward psychological horror with slasher mixed in. It had a great veteran, Oscar-nominated director who had done the original Cape Fear, good veteran actors including Glenn Ford and some really good acting by Melissa Sue Anderson. The mystery storyline and creepy score made it all the better.

I liked the original. Granted, it was ong and cheesey, but, hey, those were the horror movies of the 8-'s for ya. I liked it, and when will they stop remaking movies? I will explode. I can't take it anymore. This is too much for me. What happens when they run out of horror movies too remake? Hmm?! will they stop making horror movies?! Hmm!?! Or will they try to make remake remade horror movies?!? I am sick of this bullshit! i am a happy person almost all the time, but shit like this brings me down more then anything because i love movies, motly horror. Hollywood will not stop! And I am not just ranting random bullshit; i have been holding this in forever now. This movie better be good.

I'm a sucker for '80s horror, and "Happy Birthday To Me" is one of my favorites! I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I'm particularly interested in how they're going to pull off a certain aspect of the end of the original, but I don't want to give anything away for those that haven't seen it.
