Just yesterday I was sifting through my DVD collection and came across J. Lee Thompson's Happy Birthday to Me, one of my all-time favorite '80s horror movies. The first thing that popped in my mind was "I wonder why this isn't being remade?" and "I wonder if they remade it, could it be cool?" By an ironic stroke of fate I received an e-mail this morning answering one of the two questions. We can confirm that a remake to the film is officially in the works. No other details can be revealed at this time. Whether it will be a "killer party" once again remains to be seen, but I can see this remake getting a solid treatment. In the original, Virginia is proud that she belongs to a clique. The best students at a private school. But before her 18th birthday, a grueling set of murders take place and her friends are the ones who are falling prey. Could it be her? She suffers from blackouts due to a freak accident one year earlier. We soon learn the truth behind her accident and what is going on...
I am hoping this remake train derails sometime, this is getting really boring. Want to know why the box office is down these days? It's because of remakes of movies we have already seen that's why!!!!
That's actually a perfect one to turn into one of these dick-cheese PG-13 remakes because with the exception of one scene (schiskabob through the throat) the original movie was pretty dick-cheese. Ahh, fuck these remakes.
i love this movie! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't let Sony Screen Gems get their hands on it!!! they are planning on raping HELL NIGHT, not Happy B-Day to ME, too!!!
This is another one of those old(not classic) horror flicks I hated. I hope it gets done badly and bombs. The more of these that get made and go bad, the sooner this shitstorm of bad remakes ends. God I can't wait for the Friday remake, a remake of a cool flick from a good series with lots of potential. Hey Mr.D, soon you'll be able to start another site devoted entirely to remakes lol :P
Its nothing wrong with remakes, they've been good, but its the freakin pg-13 ones that make me want to vomit. Prom night was quit gritty and harsh to be pg 13 and had a nice body count. At least in these pg 13 horror films use some blood splatter like prom night did. And real looking blood, no orange shit. I hope this doesn't go the pg-13 route, stay stong, resist!
Jonny, lol. I'll actually take 3-D over a watered down pg-13 piece of crap. Hopefully My bloody valentine 3-D, friday the 13 and FD4 will bring the R back with a vengence.
Yeah, this movie is an 80's cult classic so I've always known this would get a remake sooner or later. I hope they don't change much...I just think it would be interesting. I love the final twist!
This is at least a case of the original film having a lot of room for improvement. The premise was great but the execution was horrible.
If this is remade with an R-rating (which is unfortunately very unlikely) and they stick to the original premise (also unlikely) then they might actually improve upon the original film.
If you take away the premise, as they did with the Prom Night remake, you'd have a very generic slasher. If you stick to the original premise you could have something here.
One more thing, What is it with people thinking all the remakes of horror movies are going to be rated pg-13 now? Just because prom night was dosent mean they all are. The original prom night could have been rated pg-13 because it really didnt even show that much. Chill out!
"It's because of remakes of movies we have already seen that's why!!!!"
Really? That's funny because a lot of these movies are making a fair chunk of change.
Don't you hate it when logic and basic facts get in the way of an argument?
But look at it this way, money or not, what will hollywood do when "remake" is ALL the audience knows, they've basically been years without a true horror franchise and EVERYTHING has been remade? Will they start to make remakes of remakes(ugh, like they are doing with The Thing and The Blob)? Y'know, a remake of Rob Zombie's Halloween, or a remake of the new Prom Night, ten years from now, of course. And off ccurse, we'll probably get remakes of the few modern horror movies that are coming out. Remake of Devil's Rejects. Remake of Hostel. Remake of Saw. Remake of Hatchet. Remake of Cabin Fever. Cause you know, kids a decade from now will NEVER be able to swallow the stuff that's coming out now. There's NO way they can relate to it. I mean, modern movies, compared to the future generations, will be so outdated.
I love remakes and i love this movie. I hope to GOD they remake this and let people out there see it and pick the original up on dvd as well and give it a look.
remake..Ah, what will they think of next? I swear, someone with oustside of the box explicit horror, step in now! I want to see good movies before I die so that life wasn't a waste of viewing!
