Back on January 12th we broke the news exclusively here on Bloody-Disgusting that Kevin Williamson was returning to writer Scream 4 for Dimension Films and that Wes Craven "may or maybe not " return to direct the film. This evening we had the chance to speak to Craven, who has some very interesting stuff to say about the long-gestured project.

Scream (1996)After a special screening of Rogue Pictures/Relativity Media's The Last House on the Left remake (which was pretty great), Bloody-Disgusting was lucky enough to chat one-on-one with the legendary Wes Craven about the remake, along with a bunch of other projects.

Craven confirms our exclusive news that the Wesinteins are moving forward on a Scream 4, while also telling us what it would take to get him back in the director's chair.

"It would take it being really as good a script as the first one was," explaining that he should also be compensated for his work on the franchise, "and the pay day reflects what I’ve done for that company and what Ive gone through on Cursed (laughs).

When asked if he is involved at all in the new film's tory, he explained, “I don’t know his ideas at all. But they have made a deal with Kevin [Williamson] to write.

In our exclusive story, we reported that Williamson's script will be a younger version of the SCREAM movies and that offers were made to David Arquette, Courtney Cox Arquette and Neve Campbell to play cameos.

I hope Craven comes back for this. It wouldn't be the same without him. I really hope that the original stars have more to do than just pop up in cameos. I hope it doesn't skew too young. Maybe it's just the fact that I'm getting older, but I really hate that everything is geared towards teens these days. Let's see an adult horror film for once; and I don't mean in the bow-chicka-wow-wow way either.

I'm guessing SCREAM 4 will be centered around the notion of remakes - Someone in another town is "remaking" the infamous Woodsboro murders, and adhering to all of the "rules" of remakes in the process. And, as is often the case with remakes, people from the original will show up in cameo roles - probably to get bumped off.

I hope Kevin Williamson takes his time and writes one kick ass movie and that Wes is rewarded for all his hard work! Make a quality movie guys. Make us proud.

I kinda hope they leave the old characters behind and start fresh. Though it would be cool to see Neve Cambell die in the first 15 minutes of the movie like Drew in the original. That would be a great start.

I hope that both Kevin and Wes are involved because their both really talented and the potential for something awesome would definitely be there. The first Scream did so much for the old practically extinct slasher and the whole horror genre itself.

The first one was good. Clever and well written. I'm not sure where they can go with it. It reminds me a little of the SAW franchise. Started so good, then with each sequel, it gets weaker and weaker. I guess that can be said for most franchises. I remember SCREAM 3 being terrible. #4 ?? Goodluck Kevin.

A younger version of Scream? Erm...wasn't the entire Scream franchise already catered mostly toward teens? Oh well, I'll try not to read too much into that. I don't blame Craven for being reluctant. The Weinsteins completely ruined Cursed and put Craven through hell over insisting the movie be PG-13 AFTER the entire movie had been shot as a very violent movie! They also demanded many, many rewrites of the script. I saw an early test screening of that film and it wasn't bad...it already showed major signs of studio tampering at the time but it was still semi-decent. When it was realeased in theaters I was shocked at how much had changed for the worse. Thankfully the Weinsteins have since learned a few lessons, but nonetheless who came blame Craven if he doesn't come back?

If Williamson is penning the script then Wes will be back for sure. Well lets hope so . This could be turn out to be great. Hurry up and confirm guys !

hmmmm, im not too sure what to make of this. it would need to have an absolutely KICK-ASS script and i meanan absolute SHIT KICKER of a script to work. i didnt care for scream 2 and 3 one little bit, they were too 'up themselves' if you know what i mean and i dont think the first movie has aged perticularly well... its soooo 90's and not in a good way, like the ace ventura movies havent dated very well because of their era. just my two cents. Younger version of SCREAM = PG-13

Gail Weathers should be the killer in the end. It would top off her career as a writer and reporter to finally finish the story.

you just know that if this film works it will be HUGE and will change the way horror movies are made in the 2010's just like the first one did for the tail end of the 90's. KM

It seemed like they used alot of "new" cast members in the 3rd one which made it seem less than the others. I hope they try harder on the casting for this one. I hope this means they will release the series on Blu-ray soon!

"It would take it being really as good a script as the first one was," explaining that he should also be compensated for his work on the franchise, "and the pay day reflects what I’ve done for that company and what Ive gone through on Cursed (laughs).” Don't get me wrong, it's great to read Wes' views on Scream 4 but that quote hardly makes it sound positive that he will return to direct. If anything, it sounds like he is still wanting financial compensation for how the Weinsteins have treated him and, in the current film/economic climate, he may be on to a loser there! I think S4 will go ahead, with the Williamson script but I'll be very surprised if Craven returns tbh.

Do kids these days even LIKE the first 3? I mean i tried watching part 2 the other day, and while it brought back great memories, it was fucking awful! Very dated. 10 bucks the number 4 wont be in the title of the new one......

These movies sucked. They weren't scary at all. I think it's funny they would even make a 4th. But I guess some of the actors do need the work.

Well the Scream's are my all-time favorite movies! I do believe the first was the best but I can't help but to be dying for the 4th one! I have been for 9 years! especially the way three ended with the door. That could mean so many different things.I hope wes, neve, courteney, and david all come back and I agree that neve dying in the beginning like drew would be awesome but don't let the people know like Drew. That was a total shock so shock us again! I don't mind if they go to high school again but don't make this a PG-13!!!!!!! It's Scream! Not The Ring! One more thing..... DON'T KILL OFF COURTENEY & DAVID! They are my favorite thing about the Scream's! I would be devastated! lol BUT PLEASE GET THIS MADE AND FAST!

GRUDGE4life

i would love to see a scream movie where all but one character dies for once...

Woah, jkrouskop, the idea of making it about remakes is brilliant! Hopefully Kevin Williamson reads this site, because I would definitely pay to see that!

jkrouskop nailed it. I only liked the first Scream, and I've enjoyed the fact that after about Scream 3 that whole sub-genre of self-referential horror films died. They're annoying.

KandyMan

yes, thats how i would describe late 90's post-scream horror - annoying. however, halloween h20 is the excception in my opinion, i still freakin love that movie. KM

I see Wes's point for being cautious and don't blame him for what i heard on "Cursed" too,the Weinsteins need to offer him compensation of some sort and get Kevin to do a brilliant Script/story. but i hope Craven does return.. It wouldn't be right without him.

MikeScott22

I'm still so iffy on this one. I really don't see it working that well no matter which way they go. It will likely just end up being a rehash. The only way I could see it working well is if they went the NEW NIGHTMARE route and it was based in reality. They could have someone who was obsessed with the SCREAM movies killing off the actual stars.
