Major Update on 'Scream 4'!
Monday, January 12, 2009

While all sorts of rumors have been floating around the web over the past six months, we've been digging and digging to get the real story on Dimension Films' Scream 4. Today we have an update that comes from a 100% reliable source, although I can't use names. Things have been pretty silent since the film was officially announced back in July, but now we have the skinny, all of which can be read beyond the break.

While SCREAM 4 is still very much in the early stages of development, we have a few exclusive facts to kick start the hype.

Fact #1: Kevin Williamson (writer of two of the SCREAM films (character credit on third)) is going to start writing a draft, although it may or may not become the shooting script (which is typical).

Fact #2: Wes Craven may or may not direct, but there is a very good possibility that he will return.

Fact #3: They are making financial offers to David Arquette, Courtney Cox Arquette and Neve Campbell to play cameos.

Fact #4: This will be a younger version of the SCREAM movies.

Watch for more soon as we'll been staying close to this highly anticipated project.

Yes! I would love to see a fourth installment. With Kevin on board to write and hopefully Wes to direct it could be great.

A "younger version of the Scream movies"... Sounds like lame Prom Night redux teenybopper trash to me. Say it ain't so, Wes. Say it ain't so.

Fact #4: This will be a younger version of the SCREAM movies. DO I SMELL PG-13????!?!?!

Scream 4 wont be a Prom Night redux. No way its Wes Craven

Sounds like a lot of maybe's there. I hope Craven comes back to direct, but I don't think it's necessary for Williamson to return. Scream was original as hell, but he just seemed to be draining the well dry. Plus, we have Williamson to thank for all of the ironic, laugh at ourselves, crap that wormed it's way into horror over the last fifteen years. I hate his teenagers in his work. I just hope that whatever direction the new film takes, it is done with a fair amount of maturity, and darkness.

Oh my God.! I'm so ticked! I thought Dewey,Gale & Sidney were returning for whole 4th film. not CAMEOS!!! that makes me so TICKED!!

Funny that the original Scream films are R-rated, fingers crossed they stick to it...

3:04pm, January 12, 2009

Just a quick correction.. Williamson didn't write Scream 3.. That one was penned by Ehren Kruger. Which probably has a lot to do with why it is in my opinion by far the weakest entry in the series.. That being said, if Williamson and Craven are both on board for the 4th one then my expectations have definitely jumped up several notches..

I hope Wes directs it, loves the wes craven. That would suck if it did turn out to be pg-13.

Everybody is so quick to jump on the 'i hope its not PG-13' bandwagon these days. People even complained the new F13 would be PG-13, yeah right. Use your heads people!. The original trilogy was R and I don't see why the new movie wouldn't be either.

Jonny Horror
3:11pm, January 12, 2009

Why ? I don't have good feeling about this. SCREAM 1 was fun and original. #2 was ok. But like all series, the sequels just get worse. See SAW,HALLOWEEN,F13,ELM STREET. I don't even see Craven and Williamson being able to deliver another installment that will hold up next to the original. They should just wait another 10-15 years and remake it,(LOL).

3:12pm, January 12, 2009

So...the guy who you apparently *think* wrote all three may or may not return, and Wes Craven may or may not return. You keep using this word "update", but I do not think it means what you think it means. Did someone at some point tell you that you were a journalist?

3:25pm, January 12, 2009

Younger ... I don't like the sound of that. Hopefully it just means they won't explore Sidney's life that much further and concentrate on younger characters. The scream trilogy wasn't exactly a gorefest, but PG-13 would still suck.

I would love to see scream 4 because then all the major 4 characters will get killed off. That would be an awesome 4th installment. and it will be the end of them :) Get her done, but dont know how they will do it though. Who will go after her now.

i think this will be awesome for the scream franchise... i do agree that they should get another lead character other than Sydney. they should also have more deaths and have less survivors!

ShaZamy
3:59pm, January 12, 2009

I'm still on the fence with this as Scream is my fave movie of all time (don't judge me!) This is what I think they mean by younger version of the movies: I'm thinking it will go back to Woodsboro. Dewey will be Sheriff, Gale will be a local new anchor, Sidney will be a teacher at Woodsboro High. I think that it will deal with the student of Woodsboro high.

4:05pm, January 12, 2009

While I am very excited about this project I can't help but be a little worried about it being a "younger Scream". That and the fact that all the original main characters might just be doing cameos makes me think this is gonna be like the new 90210 of Scream... But I'm still looking forward to it.

Still mad at the fact that Gellar was stabbed in the back and thrown off a balcony in Scream 2. Back in the 90's she couldn't catch a break huh? She even spent 25 minutes of a movie running away from a fisherman and got hooked to death on a pile of tires. I like Scream, but Scream 2 was more fun for me right up until the silly reveal at the end. Scream 3 was a comedy. I didn't love it. Scream 4 needs good kids if its going to work.

Sounds bad to me, YOUNGER VERSION! WTF does that mean? and why are the 3 main characters only having CAMEOS? Ive waited for more news announced on here since July, and im sad to say i thought it would be better than this, i honestly hope that at least Craven makes it back.Wish the weinsteins would sort out a big update confirming stuff,i thought that all this time they may have been sorting stuff properly and getting the story and script sorted to guarantee wes less stress if he was to return.. what next i say?

Scream 3 finished the series with a little bit of dignity. Let it rest in peace. I especially hate the idea of a "younger" cast. You ask me, I think much more horror films need to feature characters that aren't (a) young and (b) dumb. My two cents.

5:31pm, January 12, 2009

A younger version is likely to meam a "back to high school" setting like the first one. I mean, time doesn't stand still, and Neve can't play teens anymore. And Horror stories mostly revolve around teenagers and young adults(particularly Scream, which made that cliche more prominent). I don't see the problem, though, as long as the story is good, and maybe a little more "fresh" than the others, while keeping the basic theme. Though I wonder what "horror cliches" they can address now? I mean, are they going to bring forth horror cliches from torture porn and such?

Can another scream really work, I mean in today's time horror has changed quite a bit. People are not really down for a "disposable teens" horror movie anymore, & that Mr ghost face is not even scary anymore thanks to those Scary movie parody's. One thing for sure is that Kevin & Wes are both really clever, it should be interesting.

if there going in a new direction with the scream franchise, i guess im ok with it. but if that is the direction there going, craven HAS to direct it, so it has the look and feel of a scream movie, without craven and a new cast then this movie is as crap as any other coming out.

I think it could mean everyone will end up back in Woodsboro. Sidney might be divorced from Kincaid, and gone back to Woodsboro to restart her life at the place where it all began. This time only to have her life ended, when she became a victim of serial killer(s) Dewey and Gale come to her funeral and found themselves being preyed on as well.

realsolution#9
8:20am, January 13, 2009

I agree with sunshineonjesse... i don't think younger means aimed at a younger audience, I just think it means a new batch of teens being stalked by someone who has a morbid interest in the original events from the first 3 films. This could work, you guys are way too judgemental - hell the draft(!!!) script has even been finalised yet!

HighlyTENSE

What could a scream 4 accomplish besides botching a good trilogy? This is franchise rape. It ended, let it go.

DevilNeverCry81
9:12am, January 13, 2009

Seriously, they shouldn't disrespect those characters by killing them. While I enjoyed Scream and Scream 2, Scream 3's Columbine influenced bloodless stabbings were not my fave. But it wasn't a terrible film. It just had a random killer reveal and was too much of a comedy. But the end of that film with everyone finding some sort of peace is how these characters should stay. Remaking New Nightmare by having them play themselves would be silly. Having Neve be the killer wouldn't make sense. And having Neve become a guidance counselor at Woodsboro would be stupidity. If they are going to do this, have it set in the same universe, new kids, copycat murders with no ties to the original 3. Let the "Stab" series within the series be in the films distant history. Since they would be starting fresh here, have this movie be a deconstruction of the remake/reboot/reimagining trend in horror. Have there be a subplot about a remake of "Stab". And you can even joke about remakes that haven't happened like a remake to The Exorcist with Julia Roberts in the Ellen Burstyn role and Dakota Fanning as Regan.

I am very excited about Scream 4! I think they will try to pull a Halloween Ressurection/Jamie Lee Curtis and kill Neve of in the first 10 mins, which I think is stupid because come on she has survived 5 killers and if they do go with the younger version(whatever that means) why have some who is not connected to Sidney kill her off!! I say put Neve,Courtney and David CENTER along with some fresh faces. It would be a HUGE mistake to kill them off. If Wes and Kevin are on board I have FAITH!! They have not let me down so far!

Living_dead_boy
10:09am, January 13, 2009

I really hope they don't ruin this film. I was looking forward to this until "younger verion". I hate it when sequels are made for younger audiences. What about the people that grew up with Sid during the course of the trilogy. And now we'll be left with something for another generation. I think sequels should be made for the original audience and not the new. But that's just me. x

This PG-13 thing that everyone is panicking about only started because Horror_Luva suggested it; there’s nothing in the Scream 4 news that says it’s going to actually BE a PG-13. “A Younger Version” just means they’ll be focusing on a younger cast rather than the original characters who are all in their 30s and 40s now. This, however, will be a mistake. Did anyone ever see “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer”? It was the third movie in that series but didn’t feature any of the original cast and was an atrocious continuation of the story. It went straight to DVD and should not have been made. All you have to do is look at this movie to know that Scream 4 won't work if you don’t bring back Sidney etc. Sidney is the link and purpose to the Scream films – without her, it’s just about a random killer in that mask, murdering people. What’s the point?

More mis-information/blurring the lines than a Bush press conference. People may or may not return. The scirpt may or may not be used. It will be a younger version? This tells us nothing. The 'younger version' fills me with fear that we get a tame version aimed at pre-pubescent kids. Set Nightmare-era Craven on 'em and give 'em 'mares.

The Die Hard trilogy was 'R' rated and we all saw what happened with that one. So who's to say they don't play it 'safe'? (Regardless of 'Die Hard' not being a Horror film.) Either way, PG-13 or not, I could honestly care less. The first was the only one that did anything for me. 2 & 3 were terrible. I despise Kevin Williamson, anyway. Younger version = PG-13. "Die Hard" is the perfect analogy. It will probably be some different kids in Woodsborough going throguh the same thing Sidney ands Co. went through. Then they'll show up for emoitional support Fuck it, just remake it. That's th "in" thing right now. By younger it is sure to target teens / tweens, but could end up casting some 20 something It guys/ girls such as Robert Pattinson, Chace crawford, Juno girl. The formula might change and Neve may be an important supporting role and survive another trilogy. They could focus on Cyber bully via facebook, myspace, webcam instead of the protable phone. Scream 3 took time to grow on me, but now it's actually my favourite in the series. I see there's a lot of confusion over the "younger" Scream comment... Regardless of the rating, I'd like them to focus on the quality. I am OK with Sydney absent or in a minimal role because I felt her storyline was complete at the end of Scream 3. I'd love to see Gale and Dewey back... I'll take cameos if that's the best they can do, but I'd prefer Gale in the lead. To the person who mentioned "I'll Always Know..." --- HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE film! The "I Know" series didn't deserve that craptacular POS! I'd like to believe they wouldn't revive Scream after a decade just to make something like that. I've got high hopes for Scream 4 and I can't wait!

Just 2 things to add: sunshineonJesse - I have actually read somewhere that "I'll Always Know..." was intended for release in movie theatres but because it was so horrendously bad they sent it straight to DVD. And summer_nights - I totally agree with you that "I'll Always Know..." was a horrid film. That was my point in mentioning it - by making a third "I Know..." movie with none of the original cast, they ruined the franchise. Which is what concerns me about making a "Scream 4" with a new cast. I agree with your comment that Sidney's storyline was nicely wrapped up at the end of "Scream 3", which is why they shouldn't ship in a new cast and call it a Scream movie. If they must carry it on, they need to think of an intelligent way to continue Sidney's story... Okay, sorry, I am totally responding to other people's comments now! It's only to clarify my own!

Why mess up the trilogy? The first Scream was fantastic! It was original, well-crafted, had great actors and actresses, was way gross and was directed in balls-to-the-wall style by Wes. The second was OK, but the third was almost as good as the first. I can't see this new installment being anything more than a grab for the money. If Wes and Williamson aren't involved, forget it!

As long as the killer's backstory isn't so ridiculous like Romans in Scream 3, were're fine. Honestly, the killer should just be some pscyhotic killer, continuing in the steps of the previous killers because... he is psycho. Would make it much more creepier. Like Mickey in Scream 2. I honestly think it would have been a bit better if he were the only killer. His motive wasn't necessary about Sidney. He was just a psycho copycatting the murders to be remembered.

OMG Please no younger version PLEASE! A PG-13 rating will just bring the series down at least for me! I can't say if I'm really interested in this one or not but guess we'll just have to wait and see but I can say it defenitly doesnt look promising!

I don't think that they are talking PG-13 guys CHILL OUT!!!!!!!! I think what they are saying is Scream 4 will go back to younger generation in the film. Neve/Courtney and David are older now so they want to take it back to the teens!! Scream was one of the best thing's that every happened to the horror franchise, GIVE IT A CHANCE!!!!!!!

Oh god... really? Why? Why make this movie? The trilogy is epic all on its own, there is no need for some lame fucking PG-13 sequel. What is the point of having a PG horror flick? I mean, did anyone actualy LIKE Prom Night? Christ.

I felt so let-down by the third installment's weaknesses that I can't get excited for this. I felt the third movie was so strictly commercial in nature, so abandoned the ideas of what made the first two movies good ... why care about a third? Plus, there's one character from he 2nd movie I believed far more likely to be responsible for all the evil - Sydney's drama teacher. LISTEN TO HIS EFFING SPEECH!

I will try so hard call so many casting director's and such to get in this motion just any horror I alway's loved the Scream series.

every scream sucked. not enough gore, shit bag story line and worst of all david arquette. scream could ahve been good had they cut out all the cheesy horror movie one liners and gave it some flavor with adding ina few good kill scenes besides that one garage one. wish i had 4 hands so i could give this shit 4 thumbs down.

im looking forward to scream 4 but it would be so good if the original characters where the main storyline but it says they ar just doing cameos so if they're not main characters in it then ill probs hate it.

oh, lets hope kevin is writing a good story with an awsome plot . scream 3 - which wasnt written by him i think - really sucked and oooh, i just cant wait to see sidney and the creepy phone calls. just sooo awsome. i loved scream 1 + 2. my first horror movies i saw in the cinema!

I wanna watch. But I don't understand how you people die in the Scream movies die. How do you let that man kill you when you got a gun? Or Umbrella? He would be straight dead or knocked out. And I find him unnaturally strong. IDK.....

not much to get hyped over, Scream was just 1 awesome and 2 that sucked part 4 prolly will too

So many people are shitting on this idea... why did we go to see Scream in the first place? Would we have gone to see it if they had - cast of kids - on the posters? Probably. I can think of three or four great ideas for a fourth movie, which could tie into the trilogy, bring new and old characters into the fold and add something back to the horror genre that we've been without. Scream 1 and 2 were awesome, Scream 3 was very poor and Ehren Kreuger had turned it into a pastiche of itself. But come on, give it a chance. This could be a great achievement or it could suck. We don't know until we see it and I bet most people who have made negative comments here will pay the admission out of curiosity. You might be surprised. Scream should be resurrected by the right people with the right cast and the right plot. I'm hoping that it will be great and a fine addition to the series.

i really hope they make a scream 4, i mean those movies are amazing, and girls hit me up.

It'd be nice to mix the harcore dialogues of "Pineapple Express" with the gory effects of "Martyrs". Just to make sure there's no PG-13 here.

really? didn't we say all we needed to say with the first scream? let alone with the two sequels?

First off I want to say how saddened I am to hear this and the only thing in its favour that made me curious about seeing it is that I was under the pretence that Neve, Courtney and David would be in it. To now find out they are mere cameos in the piece does not do the trilogy any favours. Secondly everyone on here keeps saying it is Craven so it can't go wrong, must I remind of the awfulness that was Cursed. I pray this movie is good but I have this deep seated fear that it will be nowhere near the standards of the other three. Please Craven & Williamson prove me wrong.

The last thing that we want is a new Scream. Come on? The same thing for the fourth time?

"Fact #2: Wes Craven may or may not direct?" This is not 'fact.' You might as well say that you may or may not direct it. I am okay with a Scream 4, as long as you keep with the original cast and don't lame it up with a PG-13 rating.

i was just assuming that a younger version of the Scream movies meant "prequel". whatever it means i hope it doesnt happen. they shouldve stopped after 1.

vallybee
4:20pm, February 22, 2009

i think they should make a PREQUAL to the original Scream.. tell us how Billy and Stu got to being the killers. This way.. everyone of the original cast members can come back! (i know this will probably not happen but i can always dream).

ChrisTheProphet

When I read a "younger version" I immediately thought PG-13. That's code for: "We're watering this down. Wes, please make this PG-13 and don't fight us on this either. The kids will love it... or at least pay for it." For those who are saying this will be bloodier and more violent, that this will be R, ask yourselves this... "What's the most lucrative rating today?" It's the same reason Drag Me To Hell will be PG-13.

Now I have a question someone anyone who knows information on this please help me. Is David Arquette, Courtney Cox, and Neve Campbell gonna reprise their roles as Dewey, Gale, and Sidney. And if they are not what is this movie gonna be about because I think they basically created the movie!!!

redguy619
2:03am, May 12, 2009

hmm....maybe the 4th film will start off after 15 years of the events in scream3 the three main characters will be returning to woodsboro where sidney is married to Det. Kincaid and Dewey is married to gale. they had children and they are attending woodsboro high. all seems well after 15 yrs. of not hearing ghostface's voice when all of a suden, a classmate of sidney's daughter was found dead. the children and their parents team up to find the true ghostface, along with martha meeks, randy's sister.
