Today we look at what is considered by many to be the best film of the Friday the 13th series: The Final Chapter. Grossly inaccurate title aside, this one offers just about everything you could ask for in a Friday film: gory kills (and lots of em), unabashed nudity, and a guy yelling "He's killing me!" as Jason kills him. Keep reading after the break for BC's thoughts on the film as we continue our massive coverage on this beloved series.
For a horror fan, there is no escaping Jason Voorhees or Friday the 13th. Even if you have never seen a single movie (for shame!), you know who he is, what he does, and what he looks like. But that's from my perspective. I grew up in the 80s, played the video game on a system known simply as Nintendo (now referred to as "The 8 Bit"), and suffered the indignity of that comic where he fought a talking Leatherface.
But what about those who grew up in the Jason-starved 90s? The only Jason films they might remember in theaters are the ones where he fights Freddy or goes off into space. The remake may be their first real introduction to the hockey masked behemoth that stalks teenagers at a place known as Crystal Lake. So for them, Bloody Disgusting and Horror Movie A Day would like to present this retrospective series: 13 Days Of Jason. Each day leading up to the remake's theatrical release, BC will be showcasing one of the original films, with trivia, factoids, thoughts, and his own full blown review.
Bloody will also be presenting a few other articles that highlight some of the series' traditions, such as the lovesick nerd character and Jason's habit of using unique weapons. Because even if you don't agree with BC's assessment of each film, there's one thing we can all agree on: Jason fucking rules.
AKA: "The one with Corey Feldman (or Crispin Glover)" RELEASE: April 13, 1984 (1,594 theaters) GROSS: $32,980,880
PLOT: Right after the end of 3, Jason is brought to the morgue with his hockey mask still on. He kills some folks and heads back to Crystal Lake, where he finds a family who apparently lives there (the TWO murder sprees that occurred over the weekend didn’t bother them much), and some horny teens for good measure. He kills them all while evading Rob, a man who has made it his lifelong obsession to stop Jason, ever since his sister was killed a couple days ago.
THOUGHTS: Tied with 6 for my favorite entry. It's interesting - the two movies that are just straight up Jason movies are the best ones; it's when they have gimmicks (fake Jason! Carrie! 3D!) that the films falter. It’s one of the scarier entries, it has lots of bloody kills courtesy of Tom Savini, and even though it wasn’t at all, the "Final" battle is fucking great. Also: Crispin Glover’s legendary dancing skills.
BEST KILL: Jason's taking down of Crispin Glover is pretty epic: he drives a corkscrew through his hand (one of the film's best scares) and then a cleaver through his face. And he does it all without alarming Teddy, who is sitting a few feet away.
MOST "HUH?" MOMENT: Again: Rob's vendetta. His sister has been dead for three or four days max - can't he at least go to her funeral before doing heavy research, packing enough hunting/camping equipment for 3 people, and heading off to the woods? Plus he dies too, so his family is having the worst week ever.
FUTURE STARS: Crispin and Corey. What else you want? Well, how about Bruce Mahler as the morgue guy? He went on to appear as the accident prone Sgt. Fackler in a few of the Police Academy movies. You happy now?
TRIVIA: Tommy Jarvis is the first male to survive an encounter with Jason. Sadly, he wouldn’t be the last - from here on out, the idea of "one GIRL left standing" was phased out entirely.

"""He kills them all while evading Rob, a man who has made it his lifelong obsession to stop Jason, ever since his sister was killed a couple days ago."""
HAHAH, that shit is funny right there.....classic.
As good as this movie is within the Jason canon, it's always bothered me that Rob went down so easily. Here's this guy who's actually hunting down Jason for sweet revenge, but then he dies like a total wimp. He didn't even attempt to fight back. Those seeing this movie for the first time and who expect to see a big battle between Rob and Jason will be very disappointed at how anti-climatic his death is.
The fact that Rib is hunting for his sisters killer is pretty fucking funny. If you made it past part 2 of the series though you already have to have a forgiving nature when it comes to continuity. This isnt actually one of my favorites. Of the ones reviewed so far Parts 1 and 2 are classic, 3 and 4 not so much imo.
Part 4 is the best entry for me . It does have great kills and again, suspense and a very , very scary feel all the way through. The final chase in this one is relentless and would have to be the best in the series, topped off by Feldman shavng his head and going to town on Jason. Love Part 4 !
Definatly one of my favs after the first. Joseph [The Prowler] Zito delivers with mean spirited kills. To bad that part 5 hit rock bottom and was just pitiful. Pitiful I say. Oh it would have really made my day if Cory F. would have been killed [for real] the second he hit the screen. What a little turd.
I enjoyed this one too. Since parts 2-4 all happen within days of each other, it's hard to explain why the entire area wasn't closed off. However they were all in different areas of the lake. And if you remember in part 3, it was called Higgin's Haven. A few problems I had here are what was listed. Rob making it a mission to hunt for his sisters killer who died just a few days before. He didn't waste any time. Pamela Voorhees headstone being in the most random place. Also when Jason kills Crispin, it would have been more logical to kill Ted who is right in the next room. Instead, he goes back outside, jumps thru the upstairs window and throws one of the twins out and then comes back inside for Ted. Not such great editing there. But as mentioned, this was the scariest most suspenseful Jason and when he is chasing Trish right on her heels, it is very intense until she throws herself threw the window to escape. And then laying there with her undies showing after the fall? Classic! This one also took a psychological approach with Corey Feldman making himself look like Jason much how Ginny pretended to be Mrs. Voorhees in part 2 at the end. 1-4 are the best.
I think the only thing wrong with this movie is that Jason kills Krispin Glover. Really jason would have been scared shitless of that guy he's a freak! Plus how can you kill a guy with a classic dance sequence like that.
Also fellas when I was at Tom Savini's school we had a day where we just hung out with him the whole day and watched his home behind the scenes tapes he made. The guy who played Jason was a old train wreck stunt man who I guess was a really nice guy, but every time Tom would take out the false teeth the guys real teeth would come out with them cause the dudes teeth were so fucked up and he was just haggard. If Im not mistaken I think and could be wrong but I think he died shortly after not 100% on that.
Irish Mic, he's not dead, he even appears in His Name Was Jason, he was a stuntman for the likes of John Wayne and hated making this movie to the point that he had his name (Ted White) removed from the credits
days - yeah my 2nd choice for most huh? was jason's nonsensical order of killing those three. I also blame that sequence of events for part VIII's "teleporting" Jason, because that's pretty much the only explanation for that part.
Also - has anyone ever attempted to map out all the different areas on Crystal Lake? the size of the lake changes all the time (look at it in 2 compared to 7) but I think it would be fun to see some attempt at a layout.
Wow!! You guys are the first people I know who have pointed out the fact that Rob feels he must proclaim "He's killing me!", as he is being killed! I think it was more like "HE'S KILLING MEEE!! OH GOD HE'S KILLING MEEEE!", funny shit.
Also pt.4 and pt.6 are my favorites too. I wonder what happend to Jennifer Cooke "megan" from pt.6. She was cool.
Jennifer Cooke and her husband run the Celestial Seasonings Tea company (?!?!?). Probably the weirdest "where are they now" factoid to come from the F13 movies.
Tied with FvJ for the best entry in the series IMHO. It was a near complete F13 flick. If they would have incorporated references to Ms. Voorhees into the conclusion then I think it would have been even better.
who was Rob's sister supposed to be anyways? is it ever mentioned?
