The movies do not need to word for word, and scene for scene of the games, but come on, what made the games interesting in the beginning was ordinary characters becoming heros because they were in circumstances over their heads, and had to find a way to triumph. Chris and Jill were just cops, or perhaps more like a cross between SWAT and reguar cops. Leon was a rookie, and Claire just a wild teen/young adult. 3 and Veronica there was somewhat of a change, but not too much. 4 Gave us a more mature and knowledgable Leon, but he still was in an alien setting, and eventually several times is in over his head. Underdogs triumphing and trying to help each other survive a waking nightmare is the heart of the stories. I think these movies miss the point with the superhuman Alice, and too much CGI (detracting from the human connection), as well as lack of true character depth. They seemed like they were hurrying from setpiece to setpiece without enough downtime, or any good character building moments. Even as fast as the movie goes, The Road Warrior does build characters, maybe not too many of the villains, but Max, The Pilot and many of the others are given their due. Look at Aliens, many of characters are only on screen for a few seconds, but you get a sense of character and you kinda feel bad for them. Of course we are talking about a movie from a filmmaker far superior to Anderson, but it doesn't take all that much, just the right set up to make it better. I think this series needs laid to rest, at least untill a good screenplay surfaces or a director with a fresh set of eyes can take over.
