Update on the 'Child's Play' Remake

This reminds me of the battle that went on to get the remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH on the big screen. After AICN posted their incredible interview with Child's Play creator Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner, we got in touch with Mancini who gave us an update of the actual status of the remake, which will also see the return of Brad Dourif. What will it take for Charles Lee Ray to return as Chucky in theaters? Read on and find out.

"We've had several meetings," Don Mancini tells Bloody-Disgusting, "I pitched my new take to the studio and got their notes. They definitely want to make the movie. But they're busy with the deal-making process at the moment, which is complicated by the fact that the remake rights are owned jointly by Universal and MGM (where we made the original film). Once the two studios iron out their agreement, and David's and my deals are finalized, I can start writing the script."

Mancini, who wrote all five CHILD'S PLAY films, is also slated to direct the remake, which follows a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray who is mortally wounded in a police shootout and uses a voodoo spell to transfer his soul into Chucky, a "Good Guys" doll.

While Mancini waits for the thumbs up, he is still working on his pilot for Sci-Fi Channel.

"In the meantime, I'm still working on my Sci-Fi Channel pilot, KILL/SWITCH, with Howie Mandel."

You can read more about that project here.

They shouldnt make a remake because Seed Of Chucky only came out a few years AGO. It shoukd be a sequel

As long as Brad and original team is involved, it could be worse. Though they could just make a sequel that fits the bill but Ill take what I can get.

Id like to see a really dark and creepy Childs Play. I dont want to see Chucky in his brightly coloured good guy clothes. He should look dark and evil in every way. KM

i agree with ya bill, plus chucky is a classic. as long as it si scary like how the first one was and not the same stupid jokea that were in the seed of chucky. less jokes more kill. wonder if besides brad dourif will be in the original. (ya i know he is the voice of chucky, but was thinking alex vincent, chris surandon, and catherine hickland.or curd that blonde chick from the second one would be cool too cant think of her name.)

I agree, bring back the dark, and enough with the jokes.

They should cast some giant wrestler to play Chucky. Oh, and get Marcus Nispel to direct it, because he's, like, THE go-to guy for making your movie scary. Make sure the editing is zany, too. Cast one of the guys from Reaper or One Tree Hill as the protagonist.

Well Child's play was the best of the Chucky series. Seed of Chucky was funny but I'd rather see the Chucky I saw in Child's play.

I'm sorry but even as a kid I thought child's play was stupid. Chucky was just never scary to me. I did like when he was in the elevator and the old lady called him ugly and he responded "fuck you." But other than that one and a few other laughs in the series I thought they all sucked. I liked the puppet master movies much better. Maybe child's play is one that could benefit from being remade, there is definately room for improvement. IMO it wouldn't take much for this movie to be better than the first. Maybe thats the formula for making a remake that everyone isn't going to bash. Halloween, Black christmas, and Nightmare on elm street were incredible movies to begin with. No matter what they do they could not come close to the original. That is not the case with Child's play. Chucky hasn't gotten to old to play himself. He still doesn't look a day over 3. Maybe this will actually be good for the series. I say go for it!

Usually i keep my mouth shut about all the remakes...but seriously, i am hearing news of nothing else. i mean what the hell...can't someone please just come up with an original thought. I go see remakes, and a lot of times im one of those people who give it a chance, take away my feelings for the original and say hey, that was a alright movie too. But seriously, i just want something i havent already seen, not watered down versions of Great Movies.

I am not one to advocate remakes, but honestly I think this is a good idea. Mancini is doing it, so that's good. I love Child's Play, own all 5, but there are some things about them that could be scarier. Even the first three had some unintentionally funny moments. They could make this movie fucking terrifying, which i hope they do. In some what related news, if i were to start a petition to boycott the Rosemary's Baby and Suspiria remakes, would you guys sign it?

Hey Fuad (Blood feast rules!) I would not sign any petition to boycott any remake. Remakes are just like any other line of horror films, some are good and some are shit. Let's wait and see what the movie looks like first. I still remember the outrage over the Dawn of the dead remake. And that movie was awesome.

^ I would definitely sign! But I also agree, this film is the only recent remake I'm currently standing behind. From the original crew, to the idea of actually going for the scare factor, which could be absolutely brilliant if handled correctly, a "Child's Play" remake is quite welcome in my book. I would also love to see some of the original cast return, even in mere cameos; many came together for the new DVD's special features, so one would assume they aren't . . . ashamed of their contribution to the horror franchise. But I will be quite upset if they don't integrate Jennifer Tilly into the production somehow; I mean, she and Charles Lee Ray were lovers, correct? It would be superlative to see them together in a prolouge sequence!

I am still down for this, but they need to really get into the serial killer aspect more. Brad in the original seemed more like a robber/killer. They should give him some more screen time before he becomes the doll. Really build him as a freaky killer into all angles of the occult. Then have him become the doll it would make it much more scary. Everyone remember him in exorcist 3? He scared the crap out of me in that movie thats the way he should be as Chucky not so slap sticky. Just a straight forward brutal killer who toys with this childs mind. Even convincing the kid to help set up the deaths like it's some kind of game. That would be creepy.

ok i agree with ya to the nine...they should have jenifer tilly some how involved and also with the serial killer stuff i agree with that part to do lil back story on it, but dont screw with the original alot....

I agree that this movie is not one I would care to see remade just for the fact that it was kind of silly to begin with. Dolls that walk and talk and kill are just not that scary to me. The best doll ever was from the Twilight Zone episode "Talking Tina". That was creepy.

It's not gonna be good! My god! Are horror fans fucking retarded!!?? You eat up every fucking thing they shit on you, and the rest of us are deprived of actual, original, good horror because of it. UGH! You suck!!! You deserve every shit remake you pay for!

Brad and Don are still in charge, I definately have high hopes for this now. The only thing that could ruin it is using flavour-of-the-month teen actors and too much CGI. I'm sure they'll do both, but I can hope otherwise.

With Douriff and Mancini still at the reigns, there's a lot of potential for greatness. My only worry is that the original sorta belongs in a horror time capsule; it was released during the heyday of life-size talking dolls, exploiting their omnipresence in 80s culture. Since those toys have been obsolete since forever, a reboot of Chucky won't be nearly as effective as the original was back in the day. And if it follows a similar plotline, then it's gonna be a hard sell to audiences for a modern day kid to want a doll along the lines of Chucky. Still, I'm all for Chucky being scary again, so we'll see.

I have mixed feelings about this, but as long as they don't go down the same direction as they did with Seed of Chucky and make Chucky just one big joke, there maybe hope for this. MAYBE bein the key word. P.S. Seed made me lose respect for Chucky alittle bit so this this there chance to restore it.

Guywiththegun, I agree with you in a lot of ways here, but really there are no original ideas anymore for horror. They have all been done slasher, ghost, houses. Its all been done, the only thing left is try and I stress try to improve on whats been done lately with not much luck. Or make a compilation rip off of horror films best scenes like quentin does with all of his films to make a mesh piece that people will like. Sadly though we live in a generation were everything has been done. At least in this genre.

Hey Guywiththegun, it's true, most horror remakes are terrible. But have you ever seen a little movie called John Carpenter's The Thing? Yeah? Well it is still one of the best horror movies ever made, remake or not. Or how about David Cronenberg's The Fly? So before you attack people for having different opinions than yours, you should think about the entire history of horror. You may realise that some of your favorite films are adapted or remade from prior material. Or did you just watch Saw and decided you were a horror fan? And seriously, the best thing you can come up with is "you suck"? Very intelligent.

you know i like the idea, however i have to comment on the fact that its pointless to remake the movie, simply because what can possibly be done with it? other than modernizing it
