UPDATE: Loads of 'Child's Play' Remake Talk!

Update: Brad Dourif will in fact be returning as the voice of Chucky, we've edited the piece accordingly... A few months ago it was reported that Child's Play creator Don Mancini would step behind the camera and direct a remake to his own film that he brought to the world back in 1988 with director Tom Holland. This morning a brand new interview was posted to help promote the upcoming 20th Anniversary DVD release, where creator Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner talk in details about the forthcoming remake. Read on for the skinny.

Update: Brad Dourif will be returning as the voice of Chucky, we've edited the piece accordingly...

Producer David Kirschner confirms to Aint it Cool News that Brad Dourif will in fact be returning to be the voice of the new Chucky in the CHILD'S PLAY remake.

"No, no, it’s going to be Brad."

"It’s not like we would ever… who would you get that’s better?," director Don Mancini adds. "I mean with Chucky so much of it… and David and I talk about this a lot, that because he’s a puppet, there’s an aspect of him that feels like he’s an animated character, so his voice is such an immense part of it as well as what he looks like. It’s almost like recasting Homer Simpson or something. If you could recast it, you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think."

One thing that fans are concerned about is the direction of the story, which Mancini insists will be straight horror.

"I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy." He continues, "I think, unless we completely screw it up, I think it has the potential to be scarier than the original based on the stuff we are talking about, which I know sounds very mysterious and abstract, but anyone in our position would say that at this point, but as you pointed out we do have the advantage of being the people who created the franchise in the first place."

Although the plot details arebeing kept under tight lip, Mancini confirms that the remake will in fact be an origin story.

"Other than what we said, it’s a reboot, we are telling the origin story again, but beyond certain broad stroke details, it’s really quite a reinvention I would say."

Check out an incredible interview over at Aint it Cool News.

I don't know WHAT to think about this. It's Mancini, the creator of the original Child's Play, but it's also a remake! Also, the bit about Brad confuses me. Is he or isn't he, cause the it seems like this interview both confirms AND denies Brad will reprise his role as Chucky.

magnaderalpha, i agree. i read the part about Brad Dourif like, 6 times trying to make sense of it. it IS or it's NOT going to be Brad. BD, can you guys clear this up please? i was never really a fan of the Child's Play movies (a puppet/toy just isn't scary to me), but i support the idea of trying to make Chucky scary again.

I thought it was pretty clear that Brad is back as Chucky. Like Mancini said, why replace him? I don't mind remakes as long as they have something to add to the story, and it sounds like this does. Also, I've been wanting another scary Child's Play since Part 3! I don't really like "Bride" or "Seed" and I was worried the series would never go back to it's roots. I honestly can't believe it, but the Creators ARE ACTUALLY LISTENING TO THE FANS ON THIS ONE! I don't care if it's a remake or Child's Play 6, if Chucky's scary again I'll take it! -Retro Horror Remix

If Brad is doing Chucky again then I am all for this, if Brad is not Chucky then this is pointless because no one else can do Chucky because Brad is Chucky period.

he has to be chucky! its not like he is to old and ugly to be a voice over.

I don't believe the fans are clamoring for a remake. I think they made it up. And I think they shouldn't have done that.

I'm excited about it either way, but I hope they don't go too far from the original story.

Personally I think this could be great. I think it would be cool to have Brad a little more in the start of the picture being heavily involved in the occult and satanism bunch of crazy shit. Plus having a little bit older Brad and more unhinged would be sic. Dont put him in as a robber have him be a serial killer more on the lines of how he was in the exorcist 3, that would be sic. However for the love of god no CGI!!!!! Use practical effects and minor and I mean minor! CGI only where its needed like hiding cables and rods thats it. Lot of potential here is what I think.

anyone else smelling PG-13?

Sure do!! And it smells like shit!

if BRAD DOURIF returns, and Don Mancini and David Kirschner also come back to make this film, I WILL GO SEE IT. Definitely, i want Chucky back so bad, i will take him in any way they giv em to us. Part 5 (Seed), was good but i felt disappointed in a way, hoping that it would be like the first 4, very dark, with a little comedy (thats chuckys personality) and takes itself serious, which is what i think part 5 lacked. An origin story sound awesome, lets see Brad Dourif (Charles Lee Ray in human form) killing some people! how cool is that, then Chucky killing people, couldnt get any better.

I hope it isn't PG 13. The original was R so if they want to make it scary again then they would have to make it R to succeed.

halloweenfan--exactly, but all Hollywood cares about is $$$$$ so they wouldn't even give a fuck. how about rob zombie does this remake!

Go ahead! Do a Chucky remake! I've loved the Child's Play series ever since I was 6 years old!

djblack1313
6:22pm, August 19, 2008

yeah, i agree about the PG-13 thing. of course i'm usually for R rated horror movies. the idea of a PG-13 Chucky movie is going to make this a COMEDY. if Chucky can't do some onscreen damage to his victims then it will be a (unintentionally) hilarious B-movie w/ basically a male Barbie doll running around. sounds like a Scary Movie idea.

The Dark One
6:39pm, August 19, 2008

Chucky is badass i'd like to see him on the big screen again, the fact that Mancini is doing it and Douriff is returning (i think, i'm confused on that 1 aswell) is positive but does anybody else feel that once everything has been remade and this remake hell is over we're just gonna get non-stop sequels again and again? We need some new original horror and some new horror icons!

horrorfan1988
7:48pm, August 19, 2008

I hope Dourif returns. He's the only one who could do it. If it is a scary one, I will definately see it. I've been longing to see a truely scary Chucky movie.

Grime
8:07pm, August 19, 2008

Really? Is there really a Chucky / Child's Play fan base? Also, Chucky is not bad ass. He's a doll.

thedescent08
8:27pm, August 19, 2008

Douriff will be in it! great--if it will be R and super bloody with a comedic touch I will fully support this remake.

IrvingWallace

Grime...please, you obviously dont know badass when you see it. Chucky is definitely the ultimate badass.

deadbydesire

Whats so scary about a doll? Yeah the first one scared me when it came out and I was 10. I'm glad they took it to horror/comedy. I loved bride/seed. I think this remake is a bad idea.
