The ‘Lakeview Cabin Collection’ Celebrates Cult Cinema
When the Lakeview Cabin Collection released on Steam last spring, it was nowhere near complete. It would take just over a year for developer Roope Tamminen to finish his 2D action game/love letter to the horror film genre, and finish it he has, now that the sixth and final episode is available to everyone. Like the alien Marker from the Dead Space series, the collection has been made whole, and though Tamminen has confirmed that he’ll continue polishing the game through patches, he’s already begun teasing his next project.
“I have a little project simmering that I can’t wait to show you all,” wrote Tamminen in an update on the game’s Steam page. Whatever could it be?
The Lakeview Cabin Collection is a 2D action horror puzzler that’s heavily inspired by horror films of the 70’s and 80’s, and its creator’s love for cult cinema. Its episodic structure means each episode has its own unique themes, features, and way of answering the question that basically the core idea behind the game: What would you do if you found yourself in a slasher film?
Big thanks to Rohan Sorensen for shaming me into writing about this. I hope I made you proud!

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.
We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
