Horror In Your House: November 29th, 2011
After committing many food crimes last week I’m back and basically just fatter than I was last week. Ugh. While there wasn’t much in the way of new horror flicks being released over the shopping weekend, hopefully you were able to score some sweet deals from Amazon or other online merchants. I picked up I Am Legend, Let Me In, and several other Blus for $4.99 – without leaving my house. Good stuff.
Onto this week’s releases which are led by the anthology gross out flick Chillerama and one of the best horror-comedies of the year, Tucker & Dale VS. Evil. And if you’ve always wanted a Blu-ray version of Horror Express you’re lucky day is finally here thanks to MPI. Horror In Your House

CHILLERAMA (DVD/Blu-ray) – Image Entertainment
In the spirit of classic anthology films like Creepshow and Twilight Zone: The Movie and containing films that not only celebrate the golden age of drive-in B horror shlock but also span over four decades of cinema, Chillerama offers something for every bad taste. With titles like Wadzilla, I Was a Teenage Werebear, The Diary of Anne Frankenstein, and Zom-B-Movie and featuring appearances by Joel David Moore (Avatar), Lin Shaye (Insidious), Ray Wise (X-Men: First Class), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) and more cameos than you can count, Chillerama is sure to have you screaming for more. From the depraved minds of Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City), Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs), Adam Green (Frozen), and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2).
MICAH SAYS: Diary of Anne Frankenstein and Wadzilla are absolutely fantastic and Zom-B-Movie is fun. Richard Riehl absolutely kills in his role as the struggling drive-in theater owner. Make no doubt Riehl is the highlight (along with Joel David Moore as hilarious Hitler). Unfortunately, Tim Sullivan’s I Was a Teenage Werebear is outright awful. Making matters worse, it seems to last an eternity in comparison to the others and drags the entire anthology into mediocrity. But good news, you can skip it on the Blu-ray!

TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL is a backwoods comedy of horrific errors in which two unsuspecting buddies, Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), fall victim to the crazed machinations of a group of spring breakers who have mistaken them for backwoods killers. When Dale shelves his phobia of the opposite sex to rescue one of the college co-eds, Allison (Katrina Bowden), from drowning, all her friends mistake him for a bearded psychopath hauling their friend away to a shack in the middle of the woods. In trying to rescue their friend, the college co-eds continually off themselves one by one and Tucker and Dale try to figure out why these college kids are killing themselves all over Tucker’s property!
MICAH SAYS: A good-hearted, hilarious, and gory film. A worthy edition to any film lover’s library. PICK OF THE WEEK.
VAMPIRES (2010) – MPI Home Video
Vincent Lannoo s VAMPIRES is the This Is Spinal Tap of vampire films, the true story of a clan of vampires trying to hold their family together and get along with the neighbors. Dad seems to be channelling Bela Lugosi. Mom s a little bit off. Throw a rebellious son and a daughter pining for her lost mortality into the mix and it s a recipe for family discord. Add a bewildered documentary crew and things are bound to get a little chaotic.
Scream Factory brought Frank LaLoggia’s 1988 Halloween movie Lady in White to Blu-ray several years back, and now Vinegar Syndrome gives the film a 4K Ultra HD upgrade.

1962. Nine-year-old Frankie Scarlatti enjoys a homespun childhood in a rustic Western New York town. The entire community gets into the spirit of Halloween, but then two bullies prank Frankie by locking him in his school cloakroom, leaving him trapped for the night. Alone and afraid, his slumber is interrupted when the ghost of a little girl appears, and Frankie witnesses the specter of her murder by an unseen assailant. Later, while recovering at home, the girl’s ghost appears to him again. With help from his older brother, Frankie begins investigating the circumstances of her death. He soon discovers that her murder was one of several unsolved crimes connected to a local child-killer. As the town’s bucolic veneer fades and long-buried secrets and tensions bubble to the surface, all of the clues to the mystery seem to point towards a huge mansion inhabited by a reclusive woman known as “The Lady in White.”
