Final thoughts on Unborn -- Friday the 13th here we come!
5:17pm, May 8, 2008
I am sitting in the cabin of Los Angeles bound 767 after completing "The Unborn" in Chicago. It is always a bizarre feeling when you wrap a movie. You go into it with so many expectations. Wanting so badly to make sure everything works out perfectly. When it is over some of your expectations were exceeded and some weren't. But here is the thing... there is no such thing as perfect when you make a movie. There are pleasant surprises and horrible dilemmas and everything in between.
Under the heading of pleasant surprises comes shooting an exorcism scene in a place everyone felt was haunted. The bizarre occurrences at that setting created an authenticity that seemed to elevate the sequence to a level none of us could have imagined. The ghosts running around that place saw to it that we experienced an earthquake, power outage, exploding lights and general freakiness so that by the time we were shooting the actual exorcism, it felt like Gary Oldman and Idris Elba were actually exorcising that building. When you see the scene in the film I know audiences will feel it.
Other pleasant surprises was putting Odette Yustman in the lead and watching her shine beyond everyone's expectations and truly become the heart and soul of the film. She was a total sport whose unwavering passion for the project found herself covered in bugs (that actually stung), disgusting slime, running around in skimpy outfits in sub freezing Chicago winter weather and in one scene actually let another actor put an external eye speculum... (it was painful to see done... you may remember it from "A Clockwork Orange") in her eye. Yet, through it all - she never, ever complained - always ready to do it again if necessary.
Inversely, we found ourselves against horrible obstacles that certainly took their toll. A key member of the production broke his leg (not on set) which led to all sorts of scheduling headaches not, to mention the pain and suffering of dealing with a broken leg. After a particularly grueling scene requiring an infant and a nine-year-old boy to work together, we learned the next day that the film was potentially "flashed" and had to try and recreate a very complex scene. On another occasion half of a days shot footage just disappeared into the shipping world ether... gone (luckily was later found). There were numerous exhausting night shoots with White Castle sliders at 6am for breakfast (grueling, not glamorous). Through it all, the skilled commander of this close knit crew was David Goyer, whose eager smile and unstoppable energy and drive resulted in an engrossing, original story that will scare you and get under your skin...
Looking back on it now, I can honestly say that it was a truly gratifying experience and I hope that when you see it you'll feel our efforts were worthwhile.
On Wednesday, I will begin six weeks with Jason Voorhees. Already two weeks into production, I can assure you of a couple of things. The cast is awesome and most are hardcore fans of the original series - and as such are committed to making the best Friday the 13th yet. If there were no blood at all in the movie (there is tons) it would get a hard R-rating just for nudity and sexual situations alone. And finally, and most importantly Jason Voorhees is a bloodthirsty maniac with a knack for killing in new and original ways that will satisfy even the most hardcore gore hound. Please check back here often as I will update frequently and try to sneak some photos of the goings on from camp Crystal Lake.

Yes, thank you...even a nibble can be satisfying when you are starving. I trust now that you are reading all of these comments, and with that said, I believe it was disanti who first brought up the idea of Q and A... I agree that this would be an excellent idea... and if you are undecided on how much information you would like to let out, you could reserve the Q and A for general questions at the least. You know we'd love it. Whadaya say? |

I'm too eagerly waiting for Jason's come back. Hope he'll rock like the way Leatherface did on TCM remake & it's prequel. |

really starting to look forward to this.
if they take the DOTD route this could be a great remake.
dont change the core story, and dont mess with the history or make crazy theories as to why he wears mask and such and this could be as good as any Friday. |

Can't wait, this sounds exciting, hope it lives up to this early hype it has been getting. |

Thank you for understanding the essence of FRIDAY THE 13TH, and for this great website, which will help dispel some of the doubts and reservations about this film as we go forward. |

I was actually writing a Friday the 13th screenplay when i heard about your production. For now, it's sitting on a shelf waiting to see where you take the character I was raised on throught the 80's. I do have complete faith in you sir, and your production company.
SCARE THE HELL OUT OF ALL OF US, & MAKE THE WOODS A TERRIFYING PLACE TO BE ONCE AGAIN! |

What kid of producing do you do? Do you crunch numbers with the Line Producer in the production office or are you on set? And if so where? Video village? Are you on the Blackberry all day? $300 sunglasses? I mean come on, make this blog interesting. Producing means a million different things, let us know some cool stuff. Do you say hello to the shuttle PA in the morning or do you only speak to the cool people? I'm just bustin' your balls, but for real, just get loose and tell us about you, otherwise these blogs come off as really stiff and purposeful, and maybe I'll get destroyed by the Blood-Hounds here for drunk posting on Mother's Day, but Mother is only half a word where I come from Fuller. Jason has mother issues, Leatherface has mother issues, Norman Bates has issues, we all got our issues, tighten up on that blog, Fuller. Go horror. |
 | disanti 2:18am, May 12, 2008
I think they are just going to re-write how he gets the mask...not make him wear it for any reason. And with the origin...the only improvment to it would be to shorted the time frame. Jason should be almost, if not 40, in the original story line. How about a young lean mean Jason in his mid 20's? |
 | the violent one 3:46am, May 12, 2008
all i got to say is stick to the format drug drinkin sex and lots and lots of blood and yea got a good friday i mean it was never realy a plot kinda movie sure there has to be a little somethin to the story but that was never really the selling point now was it be honest |
 | disanti 10:38pm, May 12, 2008
But you mix those elements in with a decent to above avg story line and you would have one of the best horror movies ever made. I don't wan't to be bored by the characters like I was in AVP:Requiem, you know? |

Im a die hard fan of the first 3 Nightmare on elm street movies and have been most of my life. When i saw TCM i said 'these guys should remake NOES'.Then when i saw Freddy V Jason i said 'the guys who did TCM should definitely make Freddy great again because this sucks' so im more than a bit pissed off that Shannon + Swift are writing NOES.I hope they show Freddy a bit more respect than they did in FVJ because they didnt seem to like him very much.I really hope you prove the majority wrong with this one. |
 | dem13 7:18pm, May 31, 2008
don't care about sex and nudity that much, just make it gory, darker and serious. |
 | Crwn* 1:54pm, June 3, 2008
Love to hear that ^-^ nudity is good well the girls at least hehe.
And Gore well you can never have enough of that of course there will be the story but this franchise was built around gore so the more the better.
Rock on and have fun.

(late post - hehe) It's nice to read stuff like this, about people who actually care how thy're making a movie!... I actually saw the trailer for the unborn like a week ago, and it reminded me a lot of the exorcist... it scared the hell out of me an my brother!... so we're in! |

Okay, I have a LOT to get off of me chest with you greedy, money-hungry bastards.
I made this account specifically for the occasion.
First off, haven't you prematurely ended enough Horror franchises TCM, F13, and now A Nightmare On Elm Street?
Not only this, but Robert Englund will not be replaying Freddy!!? If you remake ANOES, that is one thing, but
an actor other than Robert Englund playing Freddy Krueger!!? That is downright blasphemous!!!
There is no need for the original Nightmare to be remade, it has aged elegantly, and holds up
even to today's standards. (Which actually are quite low, due to talentless hacks like you.)
However, since for whatever reason you feel the urge to do so, ($$$) just give the fans
Robert Englund as Freddy. If not as Freddy, give him at least ten minutes of screen time in a
cameo or whatever. If not, then I swear to God that I will start the greatest cinematic boycott ever known against your film. Me and my friends will do whatever we can in our power to prevent your films from making money, boycotts, posting spoilers in the anticipation Threads on theinternet, anything that can possibly take that extra 8 bucks away from you. So please, for the love of the fans, (And for your love of money.) let Robert Englund play Freddy.
If not, then I hope that anybody and everybody and their entire families at platinum deuche (OOPS! That's not a Typo!!) rot in Hell you talentless, greedy, selfish, money-hungry low-life hacks. |
