The Unborn a 'scary' PG-13? We hope so! Your feedback is helping with Freddy's return to Elm Street...
1:13am, January 5, 2009

As you know, I pay close attention to what people say online. I have learned a great deal about what the fans expect and how we can best make films that you, the fans respond to. I am fully aware that there is a severe prejudice against PG-13 horror films. And frankly, I totally get it. Believe me, nobody loves a good decapitation more than I do. But I am also freaked out by unsettling imagery and situations. Sometimes spilling tons of blood can be a crutch when you can't think of anything better. That is why in some ways a PG-13 horror film can be more challenging to make than an R-rated one. The closet shot in The Ring freaked me out and though The Shining was rated R the sound of the big wheel going down the hall in the Overbrook Hotel still gives me that uncomfortable feeling we all go to the movies for. A lack of blood doesn't always equate to a lack of scares.

This is why we decided to make The Unborn. Drew, Michael and I wanted to challenge ourselves and see if we can scare people without blood. For us, it was about making a film that delivered the same level of scare with imagery and situations as our other more violent films. And who better to come up with exciting imagery than David Goyer. Goyer sold us the movie by showing us a photograph of dog with the upside down head. And believe me, that shot was virtually impossible to perfect. Thankfully, Satan lent us one of his actually inverted headed dogs for the sequence. But Goyer made it his mission to come up with a number of freaky situations and are so unsettling you won't easily forget them. The Unborn is full of horrifying situations and terrifying imagery. I'm not a fool, and I know that it won't be popular (especially here at Bloody-Disgusting) to admit that The Unborn is a scary film, but it is. You can't dismiss the Goyer brain and all that it has come up, with and I urge you to go see the Unborn to see how scary a PG-13 can be.

In just a few days you will start to see the ads for Friday 13th. We did air one during a hockey game, but the campaign will really kick in next week. There are a few fan-made commercials out there so beware the imitators. We are planning to go to Comic-con in New York in February and are now trying to figure out what we will be showing.

Finally, thank you one and all for the all the great feedback on what is important for you in a Nightmare On Elm Street movie. I am learning from you and hope to make a film that includes any key elements that are discussed here.

2009 will be a great year for horror and during these challenging times we have support all the horror movies so the studios keep making them.

L7square 1:57am, January 5, 2009

Funny you would mention the whole PG-13 thing because my wife and I were both just talking about it. We both went and saw THE GRUDGE and we both like the movie, the only problem was that those little 13, 14, 15 year old kids annoyed the shit out of us because they would squeel and screem at the most stupid and unscarry parts of the movie. That is all I have to say about that. Goodluck with this one we'll rent it from the video store. As for your FRIDAY the 13th can't wait to see it. I was born in the 80's and missed out on seeing any of them in the theatre, so now I have a second chance, WHOO HOO!! And as for good old Freddy... as long as he's not telling any crappy one-liners we'll be okay.

jrsjr81 2:16am, January 5, 2009

Brad Fuller, you must have Jason unmasked in the new Friday the 13th! :-)

rcinvb 7:39am, January 5, 2009

Thanks for the new update Brad. Like L7, I too will not see PG13 in the theater. I understand all that you said. It just appears to me that the dollars brought in by 13 and 14 year olds are the biggest factors in a "PG13 Mystery Film". In my opinion, if its PG13, its not horror, its Mystery/Suspense. Looking forward to Friday the 13th. Now that I will see multiple times in the theater!

voorhees213 7:44am, January 5, 2009

Thx for the updates, Brad, & good luck w/the Unborn, it looks REALLY good despite the rating. Can't help ya with Freddy (I'm a Jason guy), but I'm sure there are enough FredHeads out there that will speak up. And, am I the only one that watches hockey?

oxley 7:58am, January 5, 2009

Nice work. Knowing that your treating ANOES good, and bassed on what gets said by us fans, i can sleep a litte better ;)

Zombie Dude 8:02am, January 5, 2009

I agree that some PG13 films can be a lot scarier than an R rated film. Mainly because, like you said, it can't rely on gore and needs to find other ways of frightening the audience. Imagery works really well and can often be so simple and give the audience a feeling of unease. I'll probably check this out at the cinema as it really does seem interesting. As for the Nightmare remake I think it'd be good to hear what ideas and aspects you are interested in perusing. We need feedback too and not feel like we're repeating ourselves.

rusted31 8:07am, January 5, 2009

Thanks for the update, especially regarding NOES. There are millions of Freddy fans and we all hope our suggestions and comments will help make Freddy's return to the big screen one to remember.

With Elm Street, how about going back to the beginning, the 1970's, there's a killer on the loose kidnapping the kids and teenagers of Springfield. We follow the story of a scrawny, lonely man who works at a boilet room at a mill. He lives on his own, helps his landlady with odd jobs and keeps newspaper cuttings of missing children. The story would not focus on Freddy Krueger the indestuctable dream demon, this would be the story of a normal man with a taste of inhuman things, children. Eventually, he is arrested but released, only for the parents to track him down to his boiler room and burn him alive. The end (no open ending to hint at sequels, the original movie carried on the story well enough). And simply call it FRED.

jerryolsson 10:36am, January 5, 2009

Looking forward to the Friday the 13th ads. As for Nightmare On Elm Street, I think it's very important that Freddy should be scary as hell, just like the original. And I wish that the character Nancy should in it - she is important just like Freddy.

francesco 10:36am, January 5, 2009

Hi Brad, thanks for asking! About the new nightmare i would like to see a scary freddy, not a funny one but the real scary evil man that he was in the very first nightmare. don't give him reason to kill like rob zombie did for myers. freddy is pure EVIL! and...don't forget to think about the F13th sequel. We want it!

Фредди 1:58pm, January 5, 2009

Brad, All fans dream about volume that Robert returned to role Freddy. Don't PLEASE deprive us PRESENT Freddy Krueger!!! P.S. I ask pardons for the english, I am childlike from Russia.

francesco 2:08pm, January 5, 2009

i wanna robert too but not as freddy. we need a new young fred!!!

disanti 2:28pm, January 5, 2009

I'm going to see the Unborn and I am looking forward to it. Just because it's PG-13 it doesnt' effect me. It just means it's not riddled with tits and blood, so what? If you think that is what makes a movie, go watch some porn. You know I really liked you version of Ammityville, I think it trumps the original by far. I like the Original Omen series, The Changeling (1980), and so on. All of those go into the paranormal realm of things and are still scary. The Changeling is def one of those movies that surprises you on how creepy it can be....remake?!?! Anyway, that is the type of movie I am expecting to see when I see The Unborn. All about atmosphere and pure creepiness. It would also be helpful if you helped us narrow down our discussions on Elm Street as well. Everything we are painting is very broad at the moment. If you leaning in certain directions, or want to share what your team has come up with, we'd love to hear about it. I won't repeat my comments from the last blog because I think I made myself clear enough. Can't wait to hear more info from you, read more people comments, and see some of those Friday the 13th TV spots!!! Make sure BD posts that shit on the main page!

myers23 3:12pm, January 5, 2009

I am absolutely looking forward to seeing Friday The 13th on Friday The 13th of February. As for Nightmare on Elm Street, Robert England is Freddy Kruger period. You can't make a Nightmare on Elm Street film and not have Robert England as Freddy. I predict that without Robert England, the only Freddy Kruger, as Freddy Kruger that this one will arrive to theaters DOA, dead on arrival, and that would be a shame because I like the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

disanti 4:02pm, January 5, 2009

Myers...what's the point of a remake then? I understand the call for Englund to return, but how much sense does that make to the story to have Freddy so old? I mean, I guess it could still work. Just have Freddy killed by the parents when he much older than in the original. Like a creepy 50 year old who kills kids, it makes sense to me. I buy that. If they decided to stay young and try something different, I'm still here though, still interested. Don't get me wrong, it COULD fail, but it could also fail with Englund at the helm as well, it works both ways. What I am saying is don't write it off one way or the other until you've seen enough to make fair assumption of what's to come. Even then, you have to see it in the end to make the final call.

jah jah jason 8:11pm, January 5, 2009

Im excited to see The Unborn even with the PG13 rating. Of course more excited to see Friday the 13th!!!!!!!!!!!!! As for NOES, I am excited! A. Couple of things you must have the extending arms in the alley scene. Please make Freddy scare me again. Unknown actors please. Also, say yes to F13th sequel.

SilVerBuLLeT25 9:11pm, January 5, 2009

I would love to see something i havnt seen before with a new nightmare on elm street. i feel freddys dead gave us are prequel. Being a freddy fan sense i was seven seeing all the movies a million times, i would really like to see a really dark freddy! Make his character more open like what was done in part two when freddy crash's the party! I wana be blown away by this movie rather then it just filling gaps, which in my eyes arent any!

NJkidd356 9:25pm, January 5, 2009

i think the new NOES needs to be about 1/2 prequel to really tell the story of freddy. i remember growing up how scary the whole nun/religion factor with amanda kreuger. definitely start with the "son of 100 maniacs" beginning showing kreugers arrival into the world! the early 70's time period can be made really creepy!!!

Blood-Sicles 9:31pm, January 5, 2009

I'm going to see the Unborn, but ONLY because my idiot friend is dying to see it. It's not that I hate 13-horror...The acting just looks terrible...For Nightmare on Elm St, make Freddy scary and if Robert Englund doesn't return, hire a no-name! Putting a famous actor in that role will destroy the film for me. People wont see Freddy as horrifying, but as 'that famous dude'...Ugh..and stay away from 'prequel' too! TCM remake kicked ass, but the prequel SUCKED and so did the remake/prequel of Halloween...I'd just make a sequel to 'New Nightmare' or something other than a remake...but whatever...

Mikey Myers 9:34pm, January 5, 2009

I'm not going to waste your time and tell you how I think the movie should go, because I'm sure you're way ahead of us on that one. I would like to give you some quick thoughts on how I think an incredibly effective, scary Freddy should be. 1. Non sympathetic. Halloween, IMO, failed miserably in making Michael a sympathetic character. 2. Crafty. Freddy was not only a slasher film known for it's blood, but it's uneasy imagery. Nothing too over the top and CGI infested (because it's very very distracting), but uneasy in terms of the ceiling drag kill in ANOES & New Nightmare. Simple yet effective. 3. Intimidating. Freddy definitely was in the first and New Nightmare. When he spoke, you listened. "Hey Dylan, ever play skin the cat?" Good stuff. I would also just try to lay off the CGI and cheesiness. Let's make Freddy a force to be reckoned with once more.

Scream110 9:40pm, January 5, 2009

I have one request for Elm Street, because I'm very worried about it being remade or rebooted. Just make Fred Krueger scary again. He was scary in the first two Elm Street films, but that's about it. Skip the comic relief and bring back the ol' vicious Freddy that terrified the generation of the 80s.

rusted31 9:42pm, January 5, 2009

Just don't make the film a backstory, i cant stress that enough. we don't want to see Krueger as a human being but as a nasty dream demon killer.

horrorfan_180 9:50pm, January 5, 2009

The Unborn looks really good, i plan on seeing it! As for the new Nightmare On Elm Street, dont have Freddy cursing or saying funny one liners, make him scary again!! please!! make him scary!! and i agree you must bring back the character of Nancy Thompson. She is a really important character and would make the movie better!

CampBlood1980 9:51pm, January 5, 2009

Can't wait for Feb. 13th!!! My only worry is the score. I've heard Jablonsky's scores for both TCM's and they were ok, but nothing memorable. A score for the film is such a key element! I really hope that he incorporated ALOT of Manfredini's. I grew up on the "Original" Friday's, with 1-4 being my fav's, and IMO it's just not Friday the 13th without the classic score. That's one of the main reason's I didn't care for the sequel's after Part 4....The score changed, not to mention the whole formula. Anyway, Thank You Brad for bringing Jason back to reality, and making him human again.

mikethademon 9:53pm, January 5, 2009

How about a prequel with Robert Englund returning? Show how and why he became Freddy! Show how phsyco he was in human form! That would be cool. Make it scary! People are tired of reboots, especially when it comes to Freddy! Remake is bad news, I know it. The first is unbeatable! This way, we see Robert Englund back!

disanti 10:02pm, January 5, 2009

I think the use of a flashback to tell the story of Freddy wouldn't hurt NOES. When the parent(s) reveal who Krueger was, what he did, and how they took their revenge. Small flashbacks could ad depth/life to the scene of the big reveal. Also, I think he should be referred to as Krueger instead of Freddy. Why? Well think about it. Freddy has become what someone said before, the face on the lunch box. There is nothing intimidating about that. Krueger is much more crude sounding. It's darker. I think the Krueger side of the character represents the darker image he was portrayed in the first two installments. Freddy represents the comical character that lost his edge. It became all about the punch line, and with that, the movies became 'safe' to watch. I also think that the script you approve should hit hard and fast to get it across right away this isn't the Freddy that we aren't scared of anymore. It's a brand new, dark, and evil Kreuger. From the get go, no one should feel safe during the movie.

pagan god 10:08pm, January 5, 2009

Don't do any additional backstory, nobody cares about motive, thats what made Rob Zombies Halloween so weak. Keep it much like the original, dark & creepy, not the wisecracking Freddy, but the scary one. It's going to be damn tough to top the creepiness of the original one, & all the deaths in that movie were amazing so it's going to be tough to match that. Good luck to you.

daveykurt 10:24pm, January 5, 2009

PLEASE do not cast Freddy with anyone other than Robert. His personality made Freddy what he is. Anyone else just wouldn't do him justice. I'd skip maybe Freddy as a human cause who really wants to see Freddy as a pedo child murderer.

DisarmingArcticaismyband 10:29pm, January 5, 2009

Set the film in the 1980s. The 1980s means no internet in every home and no cell phone for every teenager. It isolates the characters from both the rest of the world and their past. For instance...they wouldn't be able to google Fred Kruger and get his backstory. Some other thoughts: -Include the character of Nancy Thompson -Keep the Elm Street score. It's mad creepy, iconic, and memorable! -Bring back the scary looking boiler rooms. In my opinion the scariest boiler rooms were present in parts I and II. -Show us some of the Freddy backstory we only heard about in the other films. I remember in a Fangoria interview Robert Englund once talked about how he wrote a treatment for NOES 3 that included a flashback to Freddy's trial. I want to see Freddy's trial! That could be an awesomely tense scene! Sorry for rambling. I just had to get these thoughts out! Thanks for taking the time to read them and thanks for caring about the fans! I'm very excited for Friday the 13th! I can't believe it's almost here! -mike

billbeast 10:31pm, January 5, 2009

I have to see PG13, or here in Aus our equivelent "M". Im not 15 and thats all i rely on,. This will be one of few horror i can see in theatrtes until July 1 when i turn 15, and this looks bloody brilliant, what you've done is try to manipulate the audience into feeling insecure and then jumping on them with the scares, and thats great film making on your part. Bravo

I AM THE EGG MAN 10:35pm, January 5, 2009

I understand the need for PG-13 horror films in today's market. Having said that, Freddy should always remain R-rated. You have a chance to make something extremely dark and frightening with this film. Freddy needs to be the elephant in the room that none of the parents are talking about. I think that the characters of the parents should be just as prominent as the kids. Look at all of the great horror films that have ever been made. They were films that took themselves seriously, and didn't pander to the lowest common denominator. Please get the casting right as well. I think all of us would like to see Robert Englund return, but let's face it, if this is to be a new franchise, he's probably a little long in the tooth to do it now. I propose either Ben Foster, or Jackie Earl Haley.

DisarmingArcticaismyband 10:39pm, January 5, 2009

I agree with I AM THE EGG MAN. Gotta keep the movie a hard R. I too would also absolutely love to see the characters of the parents, particularly Donald and Marge Thompson, factor in prominently into the film.

Protecious 10:48pm, January 5, 2009

NOBODY WILL WANT THIS FILM BUT ID LIKE TO SEE THE ORIGINS OF THE SPRINGWOOD SLASHER, FRED KRUEGER THE HUMAN BEING BEFORE HE BECOMES THE STUFF NIGHTMARES ARE MADE OF...

DAKAZA 10:57pm, January 5, 2009

I think the best advice was posted under your last message. Do not make the teens your typical F13 characters that only care about smoking pot, having sex and drinking. The elm street teens need to be smart and likeable. A lot of time should be spent developing their characters. This way, Freddy seems scarier and more evil when he's trying to hurt them. Also, please use a talented no-name actor for Freddy. If cast by a famous actor, he won't be as mysterious. I think the mystery of Freddy's character made him very scarey in the original. Lastly, the glove should be awesome. Don't change the design dramatically. Stick with four blades on a leather glove and keep the blades on the small side. A thumb blade and or really long blades would be too awkward looking.

thewoozy 11:01pm, January 5, 2009

Everyone's comments about NOES seem pretty right on. 1. Make Freddy Scary. He's always had one-liners (like in part one "This, is god") but make them creepy and megalomaniacal. 2. Don't make a backstory movie. We don't want to sympathize with Freddy, we want to be afraid of him. (Of course, there's got to be SOME backstory, and I would like if this included the 'Amanda Krueger/son of 100 maniacs' elements.) I would like to add what I believe is a really important element that should be considered. 3. Do NOT make Freddy the main character in the film. Have the story surround the new victims, so we can sympathize with them and be scared of Freddy. In the remake of Halloween I didn't care about any of the other characters except for Michael's mom who had only a small role, so I spent the whole movie basically rooting for Michael, which made him much less scary. Dream Kills, Hypnocil, Boiler Room, bring it on!

sixarmspiderman 11:05pm, January 5, 2009

I think what would be cool is to use the classic montage where of course at the start of the film where Fred is assembling his infamous Razor Glove, and never seeing is face but his hands, and his sinister laugh.

Danomight 11:06pm, January 5, 2009

I saw the original Nightmare in the theater when I was 6 (it's a long story about how that came about.. needless to say my dad should have never agreed to take me, no matter how much I begged or swore it was like Gremlins). It really messed me for a while up but it changed my life for the better. So here's my suggestions 1) If you insist on not using Englund, you've gotta find his equal. He's gotta be an actor with a distinct personality, face, and body language. You need one hell of a character actor, just like Robert is. 2) Don't bother with explaining every last detail about Freddy. Rob Zombie made this mistake with Halloween.. I don't care what Michael Myers was like as a kid. Not knowing every detail about your monster is what keeps the mystery, and the mystery is what makes it scary. The more you explain away something, the more mundane it becomes. The urge is there to "tell a story", but this is horror. Horror needs more scares, less background info. 3) PLEASE, if possible, do an eerie synth score like Nightmare 1... that score really set it apart and gave it an audio identity. Now every movie has a boring stock orchestral "horror" score.. really indistinct. NOES needs that DISTINCT synth sound and theme. Listen to the orignal NOES soundtrack all the way through to see what I'm talking about, then compare it with any given modern horror score. NOES's score is iconic, the others are bland hackery. 4) Please consider using an actress to play the lead heroine who isn't a model type. Heather Langenkamp was pretty but average looking with an overbite. She was someone relateable who you could believe was an average teenager, so you rooted for her at the end. 5) Oh, and please, PLEASE keep it at an "R" rating. NOES has never been a PG13 horror series, and so it should stay.

Sean of the Dead 11:13pm, January 5, 2009

Robert Knepper must be Freddy Krueger. He's a perfect replacement for Englund. I think the death sequence, the fountain of Blood could be brilliant redone. Don't be too CGI. Do as much practical as possible! Also change the ending the only downside of that film was the ending. This may sound like an odd recommendation. But listen to a song called 'Blue' by The Birthday Massacre. It has the child like melody of the elm street films and it also was inspired by those films. It sounds like as if Cyndi Lauper is trapped in a room with Freddy Krueger and Nine Inch Nails. Forget the prequel elements. Freddy is better as this mysterious creepy pervert.

Sean of the Dead 11:16pm, January 5, 2009

Actuallya prequel elemnt would work if it's done just like Horrorwriter said: 'With Elm Street, how about going back to the beginning, the 1970\'s, there\'s a killer on the loose kidnapping the kids and teenagers of Springfield. We follow the story of a scrawny, lonely man who works at a boilet room at a mill. He lives on his own, helps his landlady with odd jobs and keeps newspaper cuttings of missing children. Eventually, he is arrested but released, only for the parents to track him down to his boiler room and burn him alive. The end (no open ending to hint at sequels, the original movie carried on the story well enough). And simply call it FRED.'

Danomight 11:31pm, January 5, 2009

6) As some others have mentioned, Freddy had an nasty evil edge to him in parts 1 and 2.. then he lost it until Wes Craven's New Nightmare... Use those 3 movies as the background template for the new Freddy (just ignore everything BUT Freddy in part two). 7) There's a real life serial killer that might make for a good meshing with Freddy's background if you do decide to show him as a human... Albert Fish. This guy was possibly the most evil sonovabitch who ever lived... a child killer (who ate some of his victims) and an extreme sadomasochist. Youtube has pieces of a documentary on him. Real sick bastard, but if you wanna make Freddy really freakin' scary, make his human form like this creep.

gerantgerant 11:31pm, January 5, 2009

Revamping Elm Street? There's a few things as a long time fan I would love to see. Some prequel elements, a good segment of film dedicated to Fred pre-burn. Some re-visited elements, by which I mean some re-created scenes from past films. A new twist, make it fresh, maybe even mess with the mythology of it a little, if you're going to start afresh throw some new ideas into the mix. And most important of all: HIRE JOHN TURTURRO AS THE NEW FRED KRUEGER. HE'S NASTY AND FUNNY. HE'S PERFECT.

VanDammit 11:38pm, January 5, 2009

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET -new Freddy! (but include England in some role- perhaps the sleep doctor dude) -keep Freddy straight up evil (not the lame joke-in-a-box he eventually became). Remember he's a child killer!!! :) -lose all the son of a nurse raped by a 1,000 madmen bullshit. Lame. -keep the dream psychology -keep the story in Suburbia -and let's push the innovation in the dream scares!! Can't wait! -V

runbitch! 11:41pm, January 5, 2009

I think you guys should just remake it keeping only the origins of Mr Krueger's story, which you can show in Grindhouse stylized flash backs . The death scenes MUST be original, must be memorable just like the original. I feel Freddy should embody evil once again like in the first film make him dark and deranged and serious, please no jokes. Try to create a gritty and frightening remake. Also Freddys face should go darker black almost like burnt charcoal, so he can blend into the shadows.

MyBlueNovember 11:41pm, January 5, 2009

I would say if they are gonna remake it, make it set in the modern now, so widescreen tvs, nice looking houses, make it scary in todays time, not overly nodding back to the 80s. Focus on being scary and not as crude like you did with some of the characters in FvJ. I would just love to see a movie that doesn't have smoking for once.

nricexbox 11:47pm, January 5, 2009

Freddy in this film should be the definition of evil. Especially if this is a prequel. And I kind of have to agree with Sean of the Dead....Robert Knepper could execute a very impressive Freddy. But I just think a prequel needs to make Freddy unparalleled.

FullCollapse 12:01am, January 6, 2009

The beauty of NOES is that the mythology, the back-story is all ready there. The failure of Zombie's 'Halloween' as well as the TCM remake and prequel is this: the writers sloppily tried to apply awkward, poorly thought out histories for Michael and Leatherface. Now, I disagree with the posters who've said no one gives a shit about Freddy's background. Totally untrue. What sets NOES's story apart and what makes it so perfect for a prequel film or a remake the deals more with the origin of the monster, so to speak, is that Craven set up so much in the original to build off. That's the key, to use the original as a blueprint for future films. Don't go the "re-imagining" route again. If anything, dive deeper into the story that Craven based his original script on, about the young Cambodians plagued by the fear that someone was trying to kill them in their sleep. Is it possible to address that, "The Springfield Slasher" plot, and do a proper remake all in one film? It's hard to say. I agree with whoever said that the protagonists need to be well developed and likable. I didn't give a shit about anyone in TCM or Beginning, but I cared about Nancy and Glenn in the original, and...oh fuck it, just make it scary.

F13 FanAtic 12:05am, January 6, 2009

Things to include: - Regular, decent teenagers. While "Friday the 13th" plays on stereotypical partying teenagers, the NOES series contains characters with depth, desire, and backstory. There shouldn't be any outrageously annoying, over-the-top characters. Make them diverse, yes, but not unrealistic. The leads should be good kids who truly don't deserve to be in the situation they're in. - The separation/similarity of dream and reality. At times, it will be obvious that we are watching a dream sequence, but not always. The key is to trick the audience into believing it will always look a certain way in a dream, then have a seemingly real background become a nightmare. - Freddy's background/trademarks/look. Don't mess with the formula. Freddy's story should be the same and Freddy should look the same...maybe just a little more disgusting since we're so used to the perfectly burned face. Real burns aren't so flattering. Keep the sweater, hat, glove, etc. We want our favorite villain back on screen, not some imitation. The wisecracks ARE part of the character and work well IN BETWEEN horrifying sequences. Freddy should be cruel. Popping out of a TV and crashing someone into the screen after a clever wise crack is both scary and funny. Killing someone in a video game while yelling "boing, boing, boing" is just plain goofy. Try to walk the line accordingly. I'll keep thinking of more. Thanks for the opportunity!

chrisstilwell 12:15am, January 6, 2009

Number one thing about doing a nightmare film is ROBERT ENGLUND. NO ONE but Robert Englund should be playing Freddy. If you cast someone else to play Freddy, that is a big death wish for you guys at the box office. The movie will TANK big time without Englund as Freddy. Two, badger the hell out of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell and get them (mostly just Raimi) to let you guys do a Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash

M_Margolis1987 12:34am, January 6, 2009

I really think for A Nightmare on Elm Street to be remade you need to recapture the original reason why the film frightened millions of people. The idea that someone can replace Robert Englund as Freddy is a viable choice. I think because he's said in interviews with other people that he feels he's too old to play the nightstalker Freddy Krueger. I do think the movie needs to have the essence of the original, but needs to delve deeper in the dreams and nightmares. What would really make people scared is making dream sequences more realistic whether that involves filming the movie in 3D depending on how other horror movies are picked up by an audience in 3D. Freddy needs to be played by an individual that can be dark and scary. Freddy scared me when I was a teen, soo much that I couldn't fall asleep. Think about also the fears people have and aim that at the monster you are creating. One fear that many children and adults have is the fear of death, and death. The Unborn looks like the scariest thing I've seen since The Exorcist or The Shining. I'm a little surprised it got a PG-13, and Friday the 13th is getting an R. I really want the next film to focus on a more modern look at Freddy, like instead of taking place during the 70-80s, have it take place during the 90s. Take what Wes Craven did with Scream and use that as inspiration. The top 2 Freddy movies that I liked were the original and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. The dark version of Freddy intrigues me and I've seen the movie at least 10 times now and still I get freaked out. 1. Make sure the movie has a clear story and can touch on real-life and doesn't seem too made up. 2. You need to make it dark, put creepy stuff like the earthquake scene in New Nightmare, or something bizarre and freaky. 3. Krueger needs to lose the joking attitude and be more serious; like don't get me wrong but when I watch a horror movie I'm not supposed to laugh, and hearing Freddy say "How's this for a wet dream" well all I can say is this made my girlfriend and I both laugh. 4. In order to resurrect this series you need to make Freddy a serious character and I think you need to start by showing the backstory in the film of how he became like that. 5. I want to see the Freddy that made me scared as a teenager and afraid to sleep at night. At this point the films aren't doing anything. You need to bring him back, badder and more evil than ever. He needs to have the essence of a serial killer that we can look at being a real person in society and at the same time have the unrealistic tendency to murder you in your sleep. 6. If Robert Englund was asked to do it and said no, that seems fine, but I would still try and get him to do a voice over. What if someone continued his violent spree over Springwood? What if you made a new Freddy, like the bastard son of the original. Or a new Elm Street with a new person that isn't the same Freddy we knew in the original. I'm very happy that you all have decided to take over the project, but for fans like me of the series, please do a good job. I expect this remake to be better than Texas Chainsaw Massacre and others you have done and other people have done. I'm very excited to see the New Friday the 13th, because it looks like you've captured the terror from the original and the essence of the original. Which is very good to see in a remake. Please don't butcher A Nightmare on Elm Street like Rob Zombie butchered Halloween. I would hate horror movies forever if that happened. Those are my final suggestions or notes, I hope you consider some of them. I've always wanted to write a horror movie of my own, because people always say how dark and scary my writing is. So please I hope you think and consider these ideas. Good Luck Long Live Freddy

I've listed basically everything I feel should be taken to consideration in the prior blog entry. The one thing I'm not sure I went over is that Freddy should definitely NOT be a juggernaut. They changed Michael Myers so much from what he was, and maybe it could fly to some extent, but Freddy was never an overly buff hulk-of-a-man.

NO ONE CAN REPLACE ROBERT ENGLUND. I AM SORRY BUT THE REMAKE WILL FLOP WITHOUT HIM............ SCREW YOUR PG13 HORROR AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR GREEDY MONEY MAKING ASS!!!!!

flesheater123 1:20am, January 6, 2009

All I have to say is that I am a huge fan of Freddy I grew up with Freddy, I loved him ever since a kid watching him at the age of 8. I was more scared of Jason then of him go figure. But I know Mr. Englund is gettin older and bitchin and moanin havin him come back as fred won't do. But hey just fine someone like him, who sounds like him acts like him and I will be fine. GO back and make it scary as fuck do something complety new and have it start off with how he became freddy show him like molest kids even though that is fucked up to say and do fred was a pedo and he didn't give a fuck about nobody. Thus is why he got killed and decided to coem back. Just go for the guts with this so far every remake you guys did was amazing. Keep it up.

HorrorFan1978 2:15am, January 6, 2009

I would love to see some prequel stuff in this new Elm Street...Freddy as a human.

darkrequiem1134 2:38am, January 6, 2009

I'd like to start off by saying that I am absolutely supped to see the unborn and the remake of friday the 13th. As for Elm Street...I believe in this company and the fact that they can pull off a remake...but only if they were to recast Robert England to return as Freddy Kruger. Not that it's not good to try out a new actor, but that Robert England is Freddy. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that in the eyes of horror fans worldwide, there will never be another Freddy. I feel like not recasting Robert England would be a terrible mistake, and would lower potential of the film.

AmazingSpiderMan 3:31am, January 6, 2009

I say bring Robert Englund back or don't make it at all. His age makes no difference since he will be wearing make up anyway. This isn't just any old character you can throw a mask on like Michael and Jason. Robert IS Freddy, that's all there is to it, and whoever you recast will make this an epic failure. One of the main reasons I say this is because Freddy isn't a character from a novel or anything that multiples actors can play. Unlike Dracula or Frankenstein, Freddy was created by Wes and Robert. It's not the makeup that makes Freddy, it's the actor. Just make sure the style is different enough to cement the fact it's a remake, while still keeping some beats from the original film. Also, I say don't use too much CG effects, because in 10 years they will look dated alot worse than practical effects would. So again, BRING BACK ENGLUND!

Z ... 4:02am, January 6, 2009

EVERYONE HAS A MENTAL IMAGE OF ROBERT ENGLUND WHEN THEY HEAR THE NAME FREDDY KRUEGER. SO THAT TELLS YOU THAT ANYTHING LESS WILL BE DISAPPOINTING. WHEN ANYONE OTHER THAN ANTHONY HOPKINS PLAYS HANNIBAL LECTER, IT JUST DOESN'T WORK. WE ALL KNOW WHO THE BEST ACTOR FOR THE JOB IS, SO WHY GO FOR ANYTHING LESS. ANYONE ELSE WILL JUST BE TRYING TO DO WHAT ENGLUND DOES BEST.

DisgustingMarc 4:15am, January 6, 2009

With Nightmare, I think you should start with Freddy before he is burnt and becomes what we know. I know that in a way, you can potentially ruin the mystique of the character, as what was done with R.Z Halloween by taking the mysterious shape and making him into a redneck monster, but if done correctly, a proper origin story could make Freddy so much more terrifying. I think that you should take a page from Goyer's book ala Batman Begins, and go for a more realistic tone, I actually welcome this remake, although a huge fan of the original, I think this should be dark, and not have the camp and comedy of the original. I think that some of what makes Freddy who he is is his humor, but there's a difference between dark humor and what happened to this series later on when it basically became a horror comedy with people like Rosanne making cameos, which it cannot again. I think a well done remake could involve Freddy and Nancy's parents, and than cut to modern day with Nancy and her parents, and not long after Nancy being terrorized in her dreams by Freddy, but somehow portraying it a lot more believably. How does someone become the stuff of nightmares? Voodoo, occult? I don't know, but in Batman BEgins, by explainig everything, it made sense, if you can make Freddy real, seem real, seem like he could happen, that a pedophile janitor could practice voodoo or whatever and afer he gets burned his spirit possesses people in their dreams and kills them or however you do it, it would be much more terrifying. I'm sure I'll get flamed, bt if you are going to redo things, you might as well redo them, and Freddy needs to be scary again. As for PG-13, I generally try to avoid PG-13 movies for 2 reasons. One is, the uncut and unrated version will be on DVD, leaving me no rason to see the censored verison in theatres. 2, a PG-13 movie, especially a horror movie, means that I will have to deal with obnoxious teenagers who will talk thorugh the movie and play with their cell phones, since movie theatres don't stop this.I have to really want to see a PG-13 movie to see it in theatres.

DisgustingMarc 4:20am, January 6, 2009

oh and casting choice wise, Josh Lucas looks like a young Robert englund

Amanda Krueger 5:17am, January 6, 2009

Hi everyone! May I just clarify this question about Robert Englund being too old to play Freddy... The original character of Fred Krueger was written as a much older man and Wes craven was reluctant to cast robert because of his young age back then, so to think that people are now complaining that he's too old is pretty ironic - he's more age appropriate now than he ever was! Also, the look of Freddy should definately mirror the first films makeup by David Miller. Hell, why not try and get him back to do it?? And don't change the glove!! The original glove was the best one by far, the glove has just got worse ever since The Dream Master, culminatring with that atrocious VS glove!... Also, and I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned the Sweater, but I think the very dirty original is the best, with the full red sleeves, the guy was burn to death and in later sequels it looked like it had been washed, just fraying the sleeves doesn't count! I think the overall consensus is keep it dark and scary like the first, no one seems to disagree on that one. But please keep Robert if poss. Oh also, I just remembered. Didn't Tobe Hooper Executive Produce on the Chainsaw remake and sequel?? If that was the case, would it not be a nice idea to get Wes Craven on board in some capacity??? And yes, I'd like to see a certain amount of prequel stuff going on there, if you've ever read the Life and death of Freddy Krueger in the film adaptation books, it does detail the deplorable child murdering side of Fred Krueger, I think the most interesting and controverial. In my mind the best part of Freddy vs Jason was the stuff with Englund as a child killer - the rest was awful! Ok, thats my rant, I'm done now! ps: the original hat was grey. Keep that too! He's not Harrison ford.. AK

If you truly listen to fan input, I have a proposition for you. A kind of put your money where your mouth is scenario. I am an independent filmmaker. If you need proof of that, I can. I have some ideas that I would love to put down into a treatment for this film. I am willing to sign whatever waiver you would want me to in order to get you to at least consider it. I would provide this to you free of charge. If you like it, we can go from there. Hell, I'd even be willing to write a first draft completely on spec. If that sounds good, just go to the imdb board for yourself and PM me.

francesco 6:14am, January 6, 2009

i'm sure u'll MAKE a lot of money with this. Use a scary Fred, forget jokes! the new nightmare will OPEN A NEW ERA!!! THANKS A LOT!!!

the_great_cornholio 6:18am, January 6, 2009

Hey guys, well Done to Platinum Dunes and yourself Brad ! Sounds like you are doing a great job looking after our fave horror icons !! With Elm Street, instead of a roots story or peddling out half backstory half nightmare Freddy, how about broaching the subject of Freddy's past with Freddy facing his own Nightmares between terrorising the kids ? Flashbacks of his past and his murder could manifest in his own nightmares, showing his descent into further madness and fuelling his rage which he then inflicts upon kids whose parents killed him. Would be interested to know your thoughts on this and keep up the great work !! Cheers, Pete

Mikie 6:59am, January 6, 2009

Hope the Elm Street cast is legit!! Hope its Rated R I hope hes scarier than ever. hope theres some big naked boobs. cast Stephanie McMahon! Rachael Leigh Cook!

i know ramping a raving about the Nightmare On Elm street Remake won't make a differernce ,but honestly in all due respect if Robert Englund did not take part in this movie i feel that ,no one on this earth could or ever partake in his mannerisms. ,and that being said anyone of my generation would totally understand that robert englund is Freddy and his ,distinctive behavioral traits, are genuine one of kind traits that noonne on this earth would ever be able to duplicate .

Slashaholic 7:27am, January 6, 2009

please i ask you for the love of the fans of Robert Englund Give him a chance to Don The Makeup one last time .

Horror Writer 7:28am, January 6, 2009

If you did the prequel idea and didn;t bring Robert Englund back then how about Zack Ward? He played Mark's brother in Freddy vs. Jason who haunts him in his dream and becomes possessed by Freddy. His resemblance to Englund is uncanny and he's even expressed an interest in the role. Perfecto!

apk420kane 8:07am, January 6, 2009

Please no Robert Englund. This is a remake, not a sequel.

jerryolsson 8:16am, January 6, 2009

I totally respect Robert Englund, he will always be Freddy Krueger to me. But, actually, I think the Elm Street remake needs new blood here. It will not be easy to replace Englund, but I think it's the right thing to do. He's not getting younger. That is that I think.

jerryolsson 8:20am, January 6, 2009

and I also wish: not to much "back stories" about Freddy's past. He is Evil. End of story.

shredneckjs 9:22am, January 6, 2009

As much as I was concerned and against the idea of a Friday the 13th remake, so far the images and the inclusion of original elements have me pretty excited. The only thing holding me back from loving it will probably be recognizable actors from the WB. I imagine the original series would have been less effective if it starred big teen actors of the time, like the kids from Charles in Charge. But I digress. I'm against the idea of a NOES remake, and not because I think it'd be impossible to come up with new elements. The sticking point with me will be the same as most, Robert Englund. Frankly he IS Freddy Krueger. The character was truly defined by him. It'd be like remaking Fistful of Dollars and having someone else play the man with no name. Can you even picture that? If you have to recast I just hope it is a complete unknown, and that as long as you stay dark it does keep that menacing sense of humor he had. A select few one liners, that let's you know he's playing with the kids. Frankly I hear a lot of people saying they want an incredibly dark Freddy, but he's not a cenobite. It's his personality that has bite. I'll definitely give it a fair shot if it mantains a sense of the original. As far as setting it in the 80s or now, I would say shoot for a timeless feel, without ever nailing down the year. That's a sure way to maintain that your remake is as dated as all the originals. Don't show cell phones even if the setting looks up to date and when they inevitably look up the original murders, let them look it up on micro film as opposed to looking it up on the internet. Good luck. -Hopefully a fan

I haven't checked every comment to see if I'm being redundant or not, but I do know that some people have touched on this for Elm Street: the idea of opening the movie when Freddy was still alive. I was born in 1980, and in 89 a buddy of mine gave me a book that was novelizations of the first three Nightmare movies. But the opening chapter was a story about Freddy when he was a kid and an adult up to the time of his being burned alive. Nightmare Part 6 showed us a little of this, but wasn't very satisfying to me. I'd love some gritty, creepy, desperate imagery of Freddy growing up. Also I'd like to see as little CGI as possible. One of my favorites in the series is Part 3, and I like it because all the effects are physical and made with latex and fake blood. Make it looks tangible and dirty.

SSx13x90 10:16am, January 6, 2009

I just wonder, if her brother died in the womb, why has it been reincarnated in the form of a 6 year old boy? Can anyone fill me in?

ProudtobeUndead 11:28am, January 6, 2009

All I ask is that you have Robert Englund reprise his role as Freddy. That's all I want.

muleskiner 11:37am, January 6, 2009

Mr. Fuller Just wanted to give my 2 cents as a fan that grew up as a kid watching this series. I hope you guys the best with this project and am excited for it. Many complain about remakes but I welcome them. We always have the originals and I am always happy to see horror thrive and keeping classic characters coming to the big screen. Now onto my suggestions… by the way this will probably not be the best-written post as I am hurryingly written this at work Keeping the original clan of friends and parents intact (especially Nancy and her parents) is an important element to this remake, I always imagined these kids parents being the main conspirators behind Krueger’s death and that is why Freddy comes after them first after his death. I would like to see the rage and anger from these parents and their relationship with Krueger before his murder, maybe even making Krueger a close friend of theirs that was doing all these sick things to their children behind the parents back before he one day kidnaps and kills their children (maybe having all the current children having older brothers and sisters they never knew about that were murdered by Fred when they were just babies). I also like the idea of an emphasis on the kidnappings instead of just murder itself, makes Krueger’s actions more sadistic (thinking Buffalo Bill). And please give the main characters depth, especially the kids, we want to care about them and be scared for them when they’re being chased. We don’t need another group of stupid beer drinking/pot smoking kids. This was done well in the original, kids don’t always have to be drinking frosty ones and smoking weed to be killed. Have them make smart decisions when Krueger is chasing them… the dream world is Krueger’s personal maze, they are going to get caught anyway… Would also like to keep the setting and timeline of the original. It was obviously a more isolated time with no cell phones/internet and such and i would like to see things kept that way. The style was different in the late 70's early 80'sand would like to see that carried over. As far as Freddy, I love Englund’s performance as much as the next guy and think that he will always be Freddy but i don't think fresh blood in the role will hurt things. We all want Freddy to be scary again...and with a character like Freddy this means he needs to stay hidden, in the shadows and not well lit. This is what made Freddy scary as hell in the original. And like the original i don't want much dialogue out of Freddy either, keep it to frightening (not campy) remarks and a sadistic chuckle. Let his glove do a lot of the talking… lots of sound effects can come from that thing. This brings me to the FX. Please oh please keep the CGI slim to none for the props, make up, etc. This is why we all love 70's and 80's horror. Even though the props/puppets/prosthetics/etc. didn't resemble their real life counterparts all the time, they at least had a real, tactile texture to them and i would hope with today’s advances in this field we could makes such things look more life like (ex. a fake head never looked like a real head because they couldn't get the features just right to replicate an actor but the skin, hair and such looked real.) This brings me to Freddy's make-up... this has to be done right and with care. I was never really a fan of any of the make-up after Nightmare 1 because the burn scars just didn't look realistic to me. I would urge you to really look at what burn victims look like. This is what is going to scare the heck out of the viewers if done right. (And when ever I saw publicity stills for installments like the Dream Master and you can see that they did not put make up on Englund’s arms but just his face… that drives me nuts… just shows their was not attention to detail.) As far as Freddy's glove i would like this to be almost a character in itself, showing how much care and time Freddy puts into creating this device. The opening sequence of the original is still one of the most memorable to me in movie history cause it just represented the care he took it creating this tool of death. And while there weren't many good things about Freddy's Dead, I did like the scene in the basement when his young daughter runs into all his different glove incarnations, showed that he was meticulous, precise and careful and that reflected on his sick character. Well those are just some of my suggestions, no time for the rest... looking forward to the release.

DekkerHead07 11:53am, January 6, 2009

I really appreciate that a producer of some great horror movies isn't using blood and gore as a crutch anymore. Hostel is old and wasn't even scary. It stopped being disturbing half-way through the movie. What is truly terrifying and disturbing for any good horror movie is the setting and imagery. The Exorcism of Emily Rose wasn't full of blood, gore, and language. It built tension and fear off of imagery, the actors, and pacing. Letting the scene build and take it's time, letting the actors draw in the audience by building the belief that something bad is going on but not being able to see anything, and then the way the girl contorted herself...freaky imagery. With Freddy...you have to understand that Freddy is a sensetive subject to a lot of people. A majority of people probably don't want to see anyone play good ole' Fred but Robert Englund. I say that you need to find a great character actor that can get away from the camp and bring in true fear...make him a real monster. Maybe by the look in his eyes or a mannerism that he does, let it be something subtle but EXTREMELY effective. It was the subtle things that Heath Ledger did for The Joker that made the character so good. He made it feel real and human. While I beleive Freddy shouldn't fully resemble something human he needs to have something about what he does, not just how he looks, be a calling card for him. A smile, a small twitch, popping his neck, something that people won't expect but it freak the the hell out! I think you can do a great job with this movie and even though I think it should be rated R since the originals were, there is so much you can do with imagery to propel this story into the next century.

DevilNeverCry81 12:00pm, January 6, 2009

Leighton Meester should play Nancy Thompson. She is good looking. Can act. And she totally has the look down. And she is not old. I know people DESPISE anything CW-WB related, but this girl is a breakout star who isn't obnoxious or ridiculous and she has the talent to back it up. Also Enrico Colantoni of "Veronica Mars" should play Nancy's Dad. The dude is also a good actor. Finally for Freddy? I say either Christopher Meloni or Eric Dane. Both are good actors with edgy looks. And they can both be a convincing Fred Kreuger. I don't think the actor who plays Freddy should look like an obvious creepy pedophile, because then it makes the backstory lack any credibility. Since I know if a bunch of kids went missing on my block, I'd automatically blame anyone who looked like Billy Bob Thornton or Richard Knepper.

warment 12:14pm, January 6, 2009

I would love to see Ben Foster as Freddy. A cameo by Englund would be nice as well. Lastly, an "R" rating is needed in this case.

horrorfan88 12:29pm, January 6, 2009

Hello, I have many suggestions on how the Nightmare on Elm Street remake could be great! I think since CGI and Special Effects have come a long way from the year of 1984, this film actually has potential to be a great remake, but only if it's done right. First off, ok, you don't want Robert England back, that's fine by me, but please, choose a worthy actor to fill his shoes. Please don't pick somebody because of the fact that they are a big name. There's been rumors about Billy Bob Thorton landing the role and in all honesty, not to be blunt, but I feel he isn't quite right for that role. So please if your going to replace England, pick an actor who is best for the role, don't just throw in a big name for the sake of ticket sales. Horror fans would respect Platinum Dunes much more if they chose great actors instead of trying to throw in stars for selling the product. Another suggestion I have is the writing of the teenagers. After seeing the trailer for Friday the 13th, I'm nervous. I really don't want to see generic stereotypes of teenagers anymore. It really is so boring and generic after being done in many films and especially recent horror films. I don't mind the stereotypes that were used back in the 70's, 80's and 90's because at least all of the characters were likeable and they felt like people you actually knew in real life. However, lately, it's been going down hill with stereotypical characters. These days all I'm seeing is characters who are brainless and one dimensional. It gets boring quick and the audience ends up not caring who dies and who doesn't. All I'm seeing now is a bunch of Paris Hilton type female characters. Male and Female Characters that are spoiled children fresh off of The O.C. Please go back to the 70's, 80's and 90's when horror movie characters were not shallow, stupid, and one dimensional. Thank God for Rob Zombie's Halloween, at least the teenagers in that movie didn't look like spoiled brats from The O.C. They looked like actual teenagers that people went to high school with. I am a recent graduate of high school and yes there are those types of people. Rich spoiled kids, and stereotypical types with not too much to say. However, I wasn't one of those kind of kids. I would like to see regular everyday high school kids that weren't captain of the football team or in with the in crowd, or kids that weren't straight A students but they still at least had intelligence or common sense or kids that weren't Prom King and Queen. Please make high school characters that do have personality to them but make them all really different and not one dimensional. Give them traits that make them relatable to EVERYBODY in the youth of America. Not just one or two certain groups in the youth of America. Some of these recent "Dead Teenager Movies" I've been watching make me feel insulted. I feel like in all honesty movie makers underestimate our youth of america. NOT ALL OF US ARE PARIS HILTON WANNABES, NOT ALL OF US ARE HUNKY MALES IN THE TEEN BEAT MAGAZINES. I graduated High School in 2007 and very few of us were like that. Please think of teenagers that live across the country, not just teenagers that live in the ritzy parts of Southern Califronia. So the bottom line is make characters that are relatable and everyday to all of the youth of america. PLEASE!!! My third and final suggestion does include casting for roles. Once the writing for the script has been completed. If you decide to bring back the characters of Nancy Thompson and Glen Lantz. Please find great actors for those roles. Like Freddy, please don't just put big names in those roles for the sake of ticket sales. My suggestion would be to do an open casting call, give stuggling actors (signed or unsigned to agency) a chance to fill the shoes of Johnny Depp. You know, the original 1984 film was Johnny Depp's debut performance in any feature film. If you just put a big name on the role of Glen, your missing out. You could possibly find the next Johnny Depp if you decide to open up casting to actors who aren't signed at the moment. If you get some fresh faces in the mix, they could represent what America is today. America isn't all about people who are shallow and one dimensional. Find actors that do look good, but they still don't have that Teen Beat thing about them, they really should look like people that every teen in America could say "Hey I Know somebody just like that". Heather Langenkamp was also very green when she was playing the role of Nancy. PLEASE DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF TO ACTORS AND ACTRESSES SIGNED TO AN AGENCY!! OPEN IT UP THE FRESH NEW ACTORS THAT HAVEN'T HAD THE OPPORTUNITY YET!!! I would really love to see some new faces up on the big screen that are people that I can personally identify with. Please take all 3 of my suggestions into heavy consideration. I know I wrote this a little too long in length and I am sorry, but I just really hope Platinum Dunes reads this and takes this into heavy consideration. I personally feel that as a true fan of slasher films, that if this film gets done right, You have the right actors, right characters, right story, excellent upgraded CGI and Special Effects. This could be one kick ass remake that holds it's own against the original. It won't a repeat of the original but a fresh take on the franchise of A Nightmare On Elm Street. Please make a movie, Don't make another product.

Devils Daughter 12:48pm, January 6, 2009

I know you don't plan on doing it but trust me, having Robert Englund as Freddy is by far the best choice. If not then no matter how good the movie will be it's just gonna be something where people say "it just wasn't Freddy without Robert" and I know many people who refuse to even give it a chance. So why remake it ? well if it's gonna be remade anyway why not use Robert as Freddy as an actual man in the first part of the movie, almost like a short prequel. Thats what fans were asking for anyway before the remake was anounced. Robert is still and especially looks young enough to pull it off. Since when does a charactor like Freddy need to be a young anyway ? Robert could pull off the creppy perverted child murdering Freddy perfectly. If you plan on sequels Robert's age will not matter because of makeup. So like I said even if the film is great it will ultimatly suffer because like I said people will always compare it to Robert and say what if ? they will also complain that there could have been a prequel with Robert which was such a popular idea since Freddy vs Jason, and once again the whole "what if ?" You say you listen to the fans right ? well look around at all the horror sites, they wan't Robert Englund as Freddy

Devils Daughter 12:51pm, January 6, 2009

Oh yeah, if Freddy has to be replaced, Bill Mosseley is the only actor I could see even coming close (still want Robert though) also Christina Ricci would be great too see in a Nightmare movie either way because I think she's just about the best actual actress out there right now.

I wont lie, im seriously concerned over what you guys are gonna do with Freddy. But i did enjoy TCM and im glad Shannon + Swift are no longer involved.FVJ proved they have no respect for Freddy.I would love to see ANDY SERKIS AS FREDDY, i think he's perfect.I think it is time for a new Freddy.Robert was great in the first 3 maybe 4 movies but i cant see him making Freddy scary again.Unfortunately replacing Robert is gonna have an effect on the box office takings.I wish my fellow fans were a bit more open minded to the idea.Id love to see the remake set in the 80's with little CGI,no crappy one liners and a great talented cast of likable kids.Keep Freddy in the dark and dont go overboard with outlandish dreamscapes. One of the things i loved was the "is she or isn't she dreaming" feel of the earlier movies.

the birkhill slasher 1:04pm, January 6, 2009

Oh yeah. How 'bout Ellen Paige as Nancy? And no back story.Save that for the prequel.

Sy83 2:13pm, January 6, 2009

Dunno if anyone has already said this but I'd like to see some of the roles going to the original cast (or cast of the other films). Heather Langenkamp should definately be in it (maybe as Nancy/the main Characters mother. And John Seargent, Johnny Depp and Patricia Arquette would also be good if any of them will come back. Plus any others you can get...I'm sure Amanda Wyss, Lisa Wilcox, and Tuesday Knight are all waiting for their Agents to call. :P

LokiRising 3:15pm, January 6, 2009

I'm not really sure how I feel about seeing a remake...Some remakes can cap a whole franchise, whic is always a real shame. ANOES was doing well on the small scale anyways. Black Flame made some legitally scary and intelligent books starring Freddy, some of which were better than the movies. It'd be a shame if this movie turned out poorly. I know it's just a money sucking franchise, but Freddy meant a lot to me growing up. He was the anti-hero, even among slasher villains. I really don't want to see a prequel either. Platinum Dunes, if you're seeing this, MAKE A SEQUEL!! Freddy vs. Jason was a sequel, and it made a ridiculous amount of money. Go for the gold and continue it! If it's actually a good movie, it'll pay for itself. I also posted this in the bloodydisgusting page. Much obliged.

disanti 3:28pm, January 6, 2009

Wow look at how this blog blew up. I check it last night and it was around 60 and now it's past 80. Pretty cool. I agree that we need serious down to earth characters, not stereotypes. You know, The Nerd, The Jock, The Hot Cheerleader. Just kids who remind me of my 16 year old brother. Nothing makes him really stand out, but he's a good kid. People know him, but he's not "popular," but far beyond being an outcast or a loser. Those are the types of kids I think most people will be interested in watching as well.

EvilDeadEchoes 3:35pm, January 6, 2009

Its good that your taking into account what the fans want, because at the end of the day, its the fans who determine whether the film will be succesfull or not. Honestly i think you should try to go in another direction with him, dont try to out-Freddy Robert Englund....because i dont think it will happen, we dont have to know what his childhood and parents were like etc... for him to be scary try to leave alot for our imagination, sometimes its what we dont know that scares us the most. please dont cast any previous actors neither for a cameo roll, or any singers who cant act etc...

magnaderalpha 4:22pm, January 6, 2009

Someone mentioned Leighton Meester above. I think she could make a good Nancy, IF certain things are taken into consideration. She can't be as "glamorous" looking, and would definitely have to be "made down" to look like a normal everyday girl. Add on top that Nancy was basically one of the more modest girl-next-door types. She'd have to be the "everyday girl" you could see walking down the street, in a bookstore or sitting in front of you in class. A girl who you might develop a crush on, but is not out of your league like a head cheerleader. I think, when people talk about a successor to Nancy, a lot will mention Rachel McAdams, who I believe has something special about her, her mannerisms, that are similar to Heather's. Though, I still think she might be too old.

Фредди 4:23pm, January 6, 2009

I will not personally go on new Nightmare, if not Robert Englund will play Freddy. And belive, not I will so make one. It would be where better if you removed is "Freddy vs Jason 2 "With (Robert in the role of Freddy) I very much respect Robert and therefore I do not intend to go in this remake. There not is in you and share of respect to him and to its Freddy Krueger's. You simply took and threw out present Freddy on garbage pit.

makaveddie81 4:42pm, January 6, 2009

An upside down crucifix scene similar to part one would be scary as shit!

drunken_violence 5:40pm, January 6, 2009

I probably won't have any interest in this new Nightmare unless Robert Englund is Freddy. Is there really a reason to remake the movie anyways? Greedy bastards.

johnny5 5:43pm, January 6, 2009

I wasn't really for this remake at all, but now that you're listening to the fans I guess it's worth making it. A few suggestions for the NOES remake: 1. Keep Freddy as dark as he was in the original. 2. Freddy has always had some sense of humor to him even in the first one such as when he cuts off his own fingers as a joke, "I'm your boyfriend now Nancy" -tongue phone or "This.. is God". It was subtle, creepy humor which contributed to his scariness unlike the later sequels which had camp humor. There is a noticeable difference. If this subtle twisted humor is removed from the remake, he will be no different than the other killers and the film won't be as distinctive or successful. 3. Try and get Robert Englund to play Freddy. Robert's own personality makes up most of Freddy's behavior and mannerisms. If you don't want Robert, at the very least get a person who is averagely built. Freddy's powers and glove are what make him scary, not physical strength. 4. Make sure this remake looks visually and tonally different from Freddy vs Jason Thanks for letting us give suggestions and good luck with Friday the 13th.

freddyzchic19 6:09pm, January 6, 2009

I really don't think the Nightmare on elm street remake should happen unless Robert Englund is cast to play Freddy Krueger. He is the one and only Freddy and no other actor will compare. If there's no way you're willing to consider the true Freddy to play Freddy, then please as least ask Robert Englund for his opinion on who is talented enough to play the character. However, I know many people who will not support or see this film if Robert Englund is not cast as Freddy Krueger at least in this film. I think that a remake is a horrible idea and i really wish you would consider a prequel instead right now. It worked for Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it'd work better for Nightmare on elm street.

JasonIsMyFriend 6:11pm, January 6, 2009

I say have new costume for Freddy. How he looked in New Nightmare was cool. I'd so grow off that a bit. I glove should have a new design with the same features of course. You SHOULD and HAVE to use CGI. Not for any contact deaths though. I think people forget how cool the dream sequences will be with the special effects of today. I think also, if this is a remake then there should be a new Freddy.(Come on people keep an open mind here, people thought the same thing about the JOKER!) But that's gonna have to come after the script. Keep a brief back story like in the original. And bring it up in the end like the original. Save the perplexities for the sequels. Really make the dream sequences TRIPPY, that's what separates ANOES form other horror films. I'm excited for the reboot of these icons. Friday the 13th is my movie of this year. You guys are on a roll (Minus TCM prequel, I think you guys know what was up with that).

freddyzchic19 6:42pm, January 6, 2009

If your only problem with casting Robert Englund as Freddy is age then i think you need to reconsider because he will be wearing extensive makeup which hides his age. Even with the advances out today, Robert could wear makeup to look younger as a preburned Freddy in a prequel. There's also a possibly of making this an animated remake and having Robert Englund do the voice of Freddy, i think that'd be kind of cool. There is a petition going right now that has over 1,200 signatures from people against the idea of replacing Robert Englund as Freddy. If you care about what fans think, then you'll also consider that not just anyone can play Freddy. It takes special talent to really bring that character of Freddy Krueger to life. I don't think there's anyone who could pull off a performance like Robert Englund did.

disanti 6:55pm, January 6, 2009

I wish to remind the people on this thread to calm down about Robert Englund. I've read so many times that you won't see a NOES film without him in the role out of respect. You need to quit that. Englund is weary of the long days putting on an taking off the make up. His age problems have to do with stunts and the number of takes he can perform. Not to mention, is he going to let a director change Freddy back to dark? He is going to want to try and pull that same stuff he pulled in FvJ. It's not funny anymore. I wish you would all try to be opened minded about this and say you would prefer Englund, but welcome someone taking the challenge becoming Krueger. Doesn't mean you have to like him and forget about what Englund did. Doesn't mean you have to hate him without seeing the performance either. When the decision is made, stand by like a true fan of movies and see where they take it. Bash them in the end if you hate it, but give it a chance.

disanti 7:00pm, January 6, 2009

This is one time where you have to ignore some fans Brad. Right now they are thinking with their hearts and not with their brains. The initial reactions will of course come with back lash, but then it is up to you to prove them wrong. If you want to be safe, hire Englund. It's a dafe move. If you TRULY want to reinvent this series, you need to start from scratch. Even though you don't like to do this, I do however think Englund has earned himself a cameo for what he means to the franchise. It shouldn't be something that takes focus away from your story, but just like with F13th, is like a nod to the fans. We all love Robert for what he has given to us for so many years, but NOES needs to start from square one with no baggage. It's a tougher sell, but the risk balances out the reward if you truly want to produce something special.

"Tina!" Tina turns around. "Watch this.." Fred cuts two of his fingers off with his razors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B9iCQyupPU Wa tch this ANOES montage, it captures the essence of this first film ALMOST perfectly.. Oh, yea. I made it.

Englundisfreddy 7:24pm, January 6, 2009

My first opinion is to NOT remake A Nightmare on Elm Street but rather make a sequel or a prequel. But, if you MUST remake it you need to have Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. He is the franchise. Atleast offer Englund the role, and if he isn't interested, let the fans know in an official statement. I think people would be more accepting to the idea of a remake if we knew that he was atleast offered the role, and he wasn't interested.

EmotionlessReality 8:38pm, January 6, 2009

Here's some feedback for ya reguarding the re-make of Nightmare on Elm Street. Don't do it, make something new and original and that doesn't borrow and/or steal from an allready existing movie that has no need whatsoever for a re-make or re-boot because it was good the first time around, and is still good to this day...in advance i'd like to thank you for not listeneing to me and let you know that I will encourage as many people as I can to not see this movie when it comes out.

You guys really are making a huge mistake in remaking A Nightmare on Elm Street. Robert Englund will always be Freddy, no one else can do it. I really hope you don't follow through in remaking the movie.

why would you remake such an amazing movie? stupid idea.

Freddy\'s Nightmare 10:41pm, January 6, 2009

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to influence the outcome of the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. It's that type of innovative thinking that's going to give the fans what they're looking for and hopefully create the best Elm Street movie possible . That having been said, I think that i can speak on behalf of a large number of fans that want to see Freddy Krueger incarnated as one evil and sinister son of a bitch. We all recognize Freddy as the evil prankster with the witty one liners, but, especially in later sequels, those funny lines didn't pack much of a punch and started to get stale. However, in the earlier movies, a mean spirited one liner like "This is God" or "Come to Freddy" was effective because it wasn't so much funny as it was spooky. There was even the simplest of lines, "I'm going to get you." I'll take that over "Ever played skin the cat," anyday because when Freddy says he's gonna get you, you believe it. I also like the creepy sing-song voice that Freddy uses because it makes you stop and think that when he was alive he probably used that same voice when taunting his younger victims. That's a thought that would make any parent shudder. Plus, it demonstrates how Freddy is always in control and is getting pleasure out of toying with his victims. Freddy should also retain that perverted vibe of his. The vibe that makes you think he'd just as easily molest you as kill you. It just adds an extra dimension to the fear factor. I think we'd all like to see the 1428 Elm Street house again. With this particular movie, it's just as important to keep an air of nostalgia for the many older fans as it is to gloss it up for the next generation. I'd say it's more important if you ask me, and little touches like that can't hurt. While wer'e on the subject of nostalgia, why not have multiple cameos in the movie from previous Elm Street alumni? Not necessarily in-your-face appearances that would take you out of the moment while watching the movie, but more subtle nods with cameos that you would notice upon multiple viewings of the movie (because what you really want to make is a movie that people will want to see ove over again). In summuation, I say make Freddy one sick, perverted bastard son of a thousand maniacs that gets off on the chase as much as the kills. I'm telling you, the singsong voice and the nails scraping on metal are crucial for this. Just make him so vile and scary that the older cats are jumping out of their seats and the younger kids go to bed that night with a head full of intensely violent thoughts that make it hard to fall asleep. Pull that off, and you'll have made a damn fine Elm Street remake that no one can complain about.

JohnnySparks 11:58pm, January 6, 2009

Glad to hear Nightmare on Elm Street will be returning to its roots. I really hope you cast a less known actor for Freddy's Part. For Example Robert Knepper currently being seen on Fox's Prison Break as Theodore Bagwell. He would be a brilliant Freddy! CAN'T WAIT FOR FRIDAY THE 13TH!!

magnaderalpha 1:07am, January 7, 2009

Disanti, I think there are a couple of problems with totally blowing caution to the wind and starting over fresh without any baggage. NOES was, probably, one of the most recognizable horror franchises to come out of the 80s. Freddy was, basically, the biggest horror icon of horror's "New Wave"(Jason, Michael Myers, Leatherface), since the old Universal days. He attained a similar "rock star" status, maybe moreso than Jason, and DEFINITELY had more merchandise flying around. Him being THAT big(despite this popularity leading to his downfall), there's always going to be more attached to the NOES name. If you really wanted to just fully start over, forget about the old series, why not just make an original horror movie. That's the only way to do what you want and have expectations at 0. The name, "A Nightmare On Elm Street" will, nonetheless, will always have expectations attached to it, and a LOT of horror fans with fond Freddy memories wanting a new movie that ranks up there with the old ones. So, nonetheless, when you remake a movie, any movie, you're always going to have expectations there. Though research goes a long way to meet those expectations. Research of the movies themselves, the fans, and maybe those who made the movies. Talk to Craven about it. But yeah, wanna start REALLY fresh, make a NEW slasher movie. And I mean, craft us a NEW slasher franchise. It's been, like, since the 90s since we've had REAL slasher franchises that weren't, well, reboots. I'm kinda rooting for Craven's new movie, 25/8, to start something new. Maybe if it's a hit, we'll get other movie makers get interested in a new original slasher revival. We'll get some NEW horror icons to add to the "greats" like Freddy and Jason.

magnaderalpha 1:30am, January 7, 2009

Oh, Disanti, I do agree that they should be cautious to what they take into consideration. I love Robert Englund. And while I DO think he might have enough juice for ONE more NOES movie, his talents as Freddy would be much better suited for a sequel in the old franchise than as Freddy in new rebooted franchise. I also agree that TO AN EXTENT, you should start fresh. Keep all the themes that made the original movie great, keep Freddy, keep the dream kills and the premise, but all new characters. No Nancy Thompson, no Glen Lantz, no Rod Lane, but characters that might feel similar. The main heroine(HAS to be a girl) has to be "similar" to Nancy in her overall character development. Likability is a MUST! None of this "I'm a dinky ditz!" or, "I'm a fuckin BITCH because that's how badly written strong women are supposed to be like!" shit. It's should be handled exactly how Tarantino described Stephen King's work. That the characters become something you get attached to that when finally push them through all these horrific situations, you're clenching your knees and hoping they make it through it. And when someone you like dies, it's like dies, you're screaming at the screen, "NOOOOOOOO!". The first three NOES movies, in particular, had that kinda magic.

PocketCommie 1:38am, January 7, 2009

Freddy's personality is what set him apart from all the other slashers. Without Robert England, it's a tough task--but Freddy still has to be full of personality. A complete psychopath, but definitely not a mute psycho like Jason/Michael Myers etc. Instead he needs to have the personality of a real serial killer (yelling and swearing at the victims as he attacks), but with crazy powers because of his dream attacking.

Quicknap 3:33am, January 7, 2009

Okay, here goes... First of all Platinum dunes is kickn ass on these movies that I grew up and were terrified of. The over all feel of grit and grungy texture along with contemporary rehashings of these iconic monsters I feel is befitting and the kind of stuff you can appreciate from obvious horror fans who make up platinum dunes. As for NOES, older freddy = wes cravens original concept. I think this is worth investigating. For those fans who know what made wes freak out as a kid and how that inspired him in effort to create freddy, would probably agree. Some of the younger people I know that have watched the original noes on dvd always get freaked over tinas dream, especially when freddy jumps from behind the tree and tells her to 'watch this' something about how his eyes dart from his cut fingers to her and back again laughing at the sick pleasure of this. His eyes are white and scream creepy. I see freddy krueger as the type who likes the torture and less the kill. The kill is the climax of the scene. I guess I'd have to say that the sardonnic humor he imposes (especially in 4, 5, 6) was really meant for the krueger fans and not really all for the mythology of NOES. More than that, just make sure you stay to wes's original concept of this character, primarily as a sentient personality that only lives in that primal and inexperienced fear that youth seem to carry and burden with before the coming of age or adulthood. I'd consider some of the cast to actually be teens. Wes Craven's involvement with any noes film seemed to pull that through even in new nightmare. As for casting freddy? Ugh I go back and forth. R. England could deliver a look with freddy that I'm not sure is easily mimicked. You would need an actor of Englands calibur, and one who could take freddy lessons from. :) Id like to see Johnny Depp in this as a cameo! Wasn't noes one of his first films? Maybe a teacher/cop/principal something..... That would be fun! Maybe glens father? Hah! Save the cg for environment and difficult effects but straight up special effects ftw! Anyway thats my .02$ for NOES Can't wait to see f13th coming up... I saw the trailer and I am sooooo in! Keep up the good work all. Don't worry about hater fans, go for the new one in this generation.

DJ_Rascal 7:20am, January 7, 2009

Alright, having been an avid fan of the series since as far back as I can remember (Probably since I was 4 when I discovered I liked Pizza, Thank you Freddy) I’d like to throw my two cents worth in here. 1. Freddy is not meant to be a jacked up juice pig, so don’t hire some stunt man or think someone who is muscled to hell will make this character anymore frightening than what he is. Slim to average body build is ideal. This is someone who was a sadistic child molester and murderer, and I am willing to bet he would have at least somehow seduced half of his victims into his grasp (without candy) by not being a scary looking bastard. 2. I agree with a lot of the users here, the film ought to take place in the 1980’s, preferably the year the original was released. With MAYBE the exception of a flashback or two, but don’t dwell on these as sometimes depending on the storyline, these become rather annoying to sit through having known the story already. For new viewers this can help, but again don’t spend half the production in flashback. Subtlety is the key. 3. Cast people who can actually act, and make you believe the story. Sure in the original, there was a few moments of camp but on a low budget film such as it was, you cant afford to go back a lot. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT CAST PEOPLE BASED ON LOOKS, these people need to have a talent. Renee Blakely was no Alyssa Milano but she pulled her role together flawlessly now didn’t she? Need I mention Heather? 4. Stay true to the timeline. Freddy is meant to be roughly twenty-eight years of age when he is burnt alive by the parents of elm street (born 1940, killed 1968). So be wise and don’t hire someone who looks more than 35 years old. 5. The original script mentions his sweater was red and yellow, though somehow in production of the original it was changed to red and green. Original fans might be pissed off if you change the colors of his sweater, perhaps even more so if you put him a boiler room jumpsuit. Stay true his costume, but an update I am sure is okay. 6. When it comes to Freddy, everyone thinks first of his glove. Take a look at all the various versions of his glove. Looking at Nightmare 4’s glove, the damage it’s under gone should be implemented into the prop; however the blades ought to be cruder. Wes Craven always said he wanted the blades to look like something anyone could find, so maybe having a few of the blades look slightly different than the rest could help its crudeness show off more, but keep them relatively similar. 7. Shoot the film in an area where it looks like the Midwest and not downtown Los Angeles….We don’t need a repeat of palm trees in Springwood, Ohio. 8. Do not change the instrumental theme of the series. However, have it orchestrated in a professional studio with Class-A musicians with real instruments. None of this techno stuff. 9. As for the “Nightmare Version” of Freddy, we all know he is going to be burned. However, make the burns look more like burns, and not like someone took the cheese off of a pizza and slapped it on someone’s face. This is a reboot to the series, it deserves only the best. 10. Freddy is also best known for his lines. Leave the comedy off screen for the behind the scenes gag reel, and put fear on the screen. The man is burnt remember. He’s under gone smoke inhalation and just admit it, he doesn’t really have lungs anymore. So raspy or deep guttural voice work would work. It doesn’t take a lot to get a point across on screen. Combine an action with one deep guttural word like “DIE!” As he’s on top of you gets the point across you’re game is over. “This, is God” should one line that is kept in this movie at all costs, NO EXCEPTIONS. 11. No cheesy photography. Focus on the characters, not the outskirts and nature surrounding the town where nothing in the story takes place. 12. The scene where Tina is dragged along the ceiling, it would be awesome to have Rod on the floor standing and trying to help her and maybe even feel a forceful punch to the floor from Freddy when he tries to wake her up and save her. Cutting from the dream to reality back and forth would very cool to see (example the hospital scene in New Nightmare where Dillon’s baby-sitter is dragged across the ceiling.) 13. Any shots of the boiler room need to be as sinister as possible. This is Freddy’s home. It needs to reflect the burnt remains of his madness, almost tomb like. Hissing pipes and steam are not going to be enough. 14. Without trying to be campy, in the final scene where Nancy’s mother is pulled through the small glass window of the front door, keep it simple. Blast his gloved hand through and muckle ahold of her face and slam it against the door to a slam cut to black or something. 15. As for the death on the bed of Nancy’s mom, this scene needs some major adjusting. No way will the same thing look good on screen for a reboot. The part where her burned body is slowly dropping into vaporous clouds with a hidden under light, too cheesy. 16. I do not really believe that in the early 80’s a dream clinic would have been in the Midwest, maybe a study in the hospital or something where a clinic is set up involving sleep deprived patients is more believable. 17. A place in the “Special Thanks” of the credits for those who will have helped you in working out the story for the movie wouldn’t be a bad idea. It’s the fans more than anyone who is going to be coming to see this film, and they deserve something that isn’t ripped apart and strewn together half assed.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT deny real fans of the Nightmares series by making this PG-13. I can understand you making new movies with the PG-13 rating, but this is a child of the 80s. We need to see blood, gore, nudity and violence in a Nightmare remake. Do not deprive us of this by watering it down to bring in the underage crowd. I was underage in the 80s and still got to see the original. PLEASE make this rated R!

freddyzchic19 11:14am, January 7, 2009

PLEASE do not listen to the comments saying that this movie should be fresh and different with a new actor portraying Freddy. While that may be their opinion, it's not the opinion of most fans who really support Freddy. Most of those fans have probably never met Robert Englund or been to a horror convention, while i have met him several times at horror conventions. If you're going to call this movie a "REMAKE" then it's gotta be almost exactly like the original Nightmare on elm street was in 1984 which is going to take a lot of time, work, and effort to pull off. Most importantly, the right director and the right actors will be needed to make this a success. Robert Englund has proven that he has what it takes to play Freddy through 8 films and a TV series. I've been to tons of conventions and i know just how popular Robert Englund is with his fans. Most of them adore him above all as Freddy. He has never had a formal chance to say goodbye in his role as Freddy so it's just too early to be remaking the film without Robert Englund playing Freddy. You should make a prequel or sequel with Robert Englund before rebooting the franchise. That makes a lot more sense to do at this point in time. If you aren't willing to do that, then i think you should at least hold off on remaking this film for another 2-3 years so someone else can make a film with Robert Englund playing Freddy first. Just because Robert played Freddy does not mean that he made Freddy into a prankster, but some fans are quick to assume things without having all of the facts. I think that the Director is moreso to blame for that and that's why who is directing the film is really in control and just as important as all the actors. Just make sure to do your RESEARCH before listening to anyone's comments on this remake.

Indrid_Cold23 11:28am, January 7, 2009

Okay. I just read every last comment. That was.... diverse. Sorta. Overall consensus here, we have 1. Dark Freddy with sinister one liners and no camp. 2. Robert Englund as Freddy, but if not, someone really really really good. 3. Normal relatable teens, and not glamorous morons. 4. Rated R. I totally agree with most of the people on here. Freddy did lose his spark as the series went on and I thank you for going back to his roots. In my opinion, though, 1. You need to stay far from having half the movie being Mr. Krueger's Springwood Slasher backstory. It just doesn't fit the mood of the overall Nightmare On Elm Street-ness. 2. Don't make it all grungey, gritty and dirty. It just doesn't work with those movies. On my knees. 3. Dark Freddy was amazing. Cruel jokes and sing-songy taunting like "Gonna get you" and "This. Is God." (Needed to mention that line. I love it.) 4. Good actors. This stumps me as it's really difficult to picture Freddy as anyone else. But I think someone out there is up to the challenge. I like Robert Knepper and Bill Moseley best for Freddy. And Ellen Page could do quite well as an average teen. As for cameos, definitely Robert as he's willing. And maybe Johnny Depp as that would earn the movie some credit and he'd probably go for it. Sorry that those were basically all repeats of things everyone else said.

There is one big thing I wanna see regardless just for nostalgia's sake.....PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE include the goat from the opening....that was just so random and sureal like NOES should be

ROBERT ENGLUND IS AN OLD PATHETIC HAS-BEEN!! TIME TO MOVE ON. I WILL NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE IF YOU LISTEN TO ALL THE WHINY BITCHES HERE AND CAST THAT HACK AS FREDDY.

Фредди 1:25pm, January 7, 2009

"A Nightmare on Elm Street"-this legend of horror movies. And to alter him-this very bad, stupid, idiotic idea. And don't compare "Friday" with "Nightmare". Freddy-the most best murderer. And he speaks, and jokes, and kills simply PERFECTLY. He not Jason, at which person is covered with mask and which cannot talk. To eat at Freddy person-and person this Robert Englund. And ANYBODY, EVER, it will not be ABLE to CHANGE IT OR REPLACE. He was Freddy always and him he and it will remain.

disanti 1:34pm, January 7, 2009

Good to hear back from you Mags. I agree with you for the most part. And, yes, a complete restart to the series without Robert is risky, but if you pull it off, the reward is greater than just a carbon copy of the original. My only concern with Englund is that he is so used to playing Freddy a certain way now that he might not be able to return to his darker roots. However, my worries are debunked a tad by his performance in New Nightmare where he did play Freddy in a darker fashion. The process of Englund coming back is him being able to change his own character. Besides that point I agree on a story change. I don't might if they use Nancy as a lead character, just as long as it's not a carbon copy premise. What I am saying is, that as a fan, I don't mind a reboot as long as you are trying to start from scratch with just the outline of the story intact. Everyone else is on the same page, Darker tones, relatable teens, yada yada yada. To touch on F13th for a second...I do expect stereotypical teens in a movie like that, it goes with the story and gives it some of his humor. The concept of Nightmare is such a farce on reality that you need to combat that by having your cast be as real as possible. If you can get the audience to relate/connect to these kids, the more frightening the movie becomes for those who watch it. I hope I made sense there haha.

disanti 1:59pm, January 7, 2009

I will say that the only similarity, besides the genre of movie, Friday and Nightmare are loyal die hard fans. One other thing that I will say is not to mess with the look of Freddy. Striped Sweater and Fedora hat...nothing else. The Glove however...hmm anyway way to improve/modify it? Have the leather singed to his hand so it is more like a part of his body? Just a thought. Anyone else want to chime in?

apk420kane 2:01pm, January 7, 2009

BILLY-BOB FTW!!!!

sj23 2:09pm, January 7, 2009

As long as Robert Englund has a pulse, there's no reason for him NOT to play Freddy. He IS Freddy.

Craig_666 2:42pm, January 7, 2009

A Nightmare on Elm Street is my favourite horror series. The teenage character's in these films could actually act and they had enough charisma and screen time before they get killed for the audience to like and root for them. The character's of Nancy Thompson, Kristen Parker and Alice Johnson are fondly remembered by fans. Freddy Krueger was the ultimate villian. He wasn't a hulking mute in a mask. He was a evil and twisted and had a personality. Freddy Krueger was unique in that we saw his burnt face and his weapon of choice was a sadistic bladed glove. Robert Englund is universally known as Freddy. No one else can play him. All the fans that see your remake won't be able to enjoy the film cos they'll be scruitinising whoever you cast to replace Englund. Also, I don't feel Elm Street needs to be remade. I'd much rather see a sequel with Robert Englund as Freddy. I would love to see Lisa Wilcox back as Alice Johnson and her now late teen son, Jacob fight Freddy again. I know this won't happen because you'll say no one will remember their backstory but I'm sure with flashbacks to part 5 you could. Alice could revisit Elm Street, to attend the funeral of her father. Whilst there she visits the old Elm Street house, as seen in parts 3-5 (I know the house is back to normal in Freddy vs Jason but there was a theory that the old vacant house was Freddy's house and was completely different to the one on 1408 Elm Street). When Alice visits the house, she somehow restirs the soul of Freddy and that night she has her first nightmare in years and dies at the hands of Freddy. Her son, Jacob doesn't believe she died naturally. He goes to Springwood and stirs up trouble but Freddy is back and is after so long an absence is thirsty for blood. I know you would not go for this story line in a million years (I'd like to see it rather than a remake or reboot or whatever you intend to call it) but just make sure Freddy is dark and twisted and is played by Robert Englund. If you really have balls I would love to know what David Lynch would do with A Nightmare on Elm Street but I doubt he would touch it with a barge pole.

the birkhill slasher 4:26pm, January 7, 2009

Freddyzchic, meeting Robert Englund at the odd horror convention makes your opinion or input no more credible than anyone elses.I live in scotland and Robert is rarely in my neck of the woods for me to ever have the chance to meet him.But we the fans have all payed our hard earned cash over the years to see movies which are no longer acceptible and do no justice to the brilliance of the original movie. It's been 20 years since Robert starred in a Freddy movie that was any good.I think it's fair to say he's had his chance. No matter how well Robert plays the part we will still recognise him from Freddys Dead.I just cant find the man scary again.

magnaderalpha 6:01pm, January 7, 2009

Disanti, I totally agree. It's something, after watching many horror documentaries when they talk to Craven, Carpenter, Argento, Cronenberg, Barker, all seem to agree that horror IS that connection to the audience. It's the lifeline that makes horror more effective. To do that, you have to make realistic, everyday people. Once you go over-the-top with specific character cliches, they become less realistic, more cardboard cut-outs. Especially with horror, the further horror has progressed, the more it's kinds started to fall back on cliches(moreso after Scream). So many times I've come across kids who say things like, "Oh, the black guy's gonna die first, cause that's how ALL horror movies are!!" or "They're having sex!! They're DEAD!!!". Mind you, for mindless horror campy fun, it's not bad. Though NOES, as far as Craven was concerned(and we are talking about the first movie), was supposed to be more psychologically striking than an overgore camp-fest. Realistically, NOES revolves around that primal fear of dying in your sleep. The connection between the movie and the audience as forged at the point that people can relate to what it's like to have nightmares. Everybody has them. The image of the characters, how they look and act, is like normal kids. Like we mentioned in the previous blog, they aren't saints, but they aren't really bad either. Normal kids, which basically makes up the majority of kids in the world. The bad thing about teens is that they are almost always written off as being stupider than they are. Not saying teens can be arrogant, or shallow, but for that matter, all ages can, ESPECIALLY adults. Not all teens care about what they are going to wear for the prom or if so-and-so likes them. There's more to it besides that, and by doing that, bringing out their personalities, fleshing their "being", they can more likable, more relatable and more real.

disanti 9:30pm, January 7, 2009

Check this out I wrote about this on the forums but this might be a great storyline to make it more original: Freddy's motivation is to seek revenge on the children of the parents who killed him right? Here is my take on how to make that story line into a new original one? It's add on to the set in reality theme. Kids are dying, but there is really no evidence that Freddy is doing it. They all look like suicides and there is no physical evidence to prove otherwise. This goes with my disease theory. Freddy invades a characters mind. First contact/infection. From there he starts to mess with them and slowly wears them down. Before they die they almost look sickly. They try to confide in a friend and that is how the disease is spread. Once someone else is told of the man with the razor fingers, that seed of fear is implanted in the new kid like a virus. Freddy then kills off the 'host' and moves to his new victim. Maybe you have an ending where the Main character chooses to break Freddy's 'chain' by killing him/herself instead of trying to get help from someone else. That is a very twisted ending and would shock a lot of people. I go that far because Freddy's power always came from kids believing in him. If no one believes or knows, he can't invade peoples minds. How else can you stop the chain? Maybe, this whole thing begins with a kid finding the old newspaper clippings of what happened. His parents have them stored in the basement or something. He reads about Freddy and becomes scared. That night he starts to have nightmares, they continue to get worse and become more real as he grows more afraid. Confides in another friend and that's how it starts. The Main characters trace this back to the first victim and discover the newspaper articles/story of freddy. They figure out the chains process and try to figure out how to stop them. In that process most of them get picked off blah blah blah you get the idea. Once again, you are left with the last kid who knows. It's either try to keep it a secret or actually commit suicide to keep Freddy from getting to another child. Just a thought. What do you guys think? I know, that was a lot.

Nancy Thompsons 11 year son Jake disappears one morning after delivering newspapers on his bike. The police pull Krueger over for busted taillight. He seems nervous. They conduct a sobriety test and preform a search of his truck. He passes the sobriety test, but they find a matching description of the clothing Jake was last wearing in a black trash bag under the drivers seat. He is arrested. He gives up no confession. It goes to trial, but the case is tossed out of court because of no warrant was granted when Krueger's Truck was originally searched. Seeing as the evidence found was contained in a closed bag under the drivers seat and not in plain view, The police had no rights to search inside the bag in the vehicle. The judge deems the evidence collected under illegal search and seizure. Krueger's walks. Nancy won't let matters rest. She leaves fliers of her son as a missing person at Krueger work site with him listed as a suspect, and a 10 grand bounty/reward for his death. Nancy is arrested at local shopping center- Under Charges of Harassment. Krueger's Lawyer files for a restraining order. Nancys Mother calls 911. The operator is located in the police station. NAncy hears whats going on. Her mother say's someones broken into the house. Her mother lets out a scream. The line goes dead. The police's with Nancy in toe race to Nancy's house. Her mother is found dead in the living room with several claw like slash marks littering her body. A copy of the flyer Nancy posted at Krueger's work rest on her mothers chest. Claw like slash marks are cut into the sheets in her daughters crib. Nancy has a panic attack, she goes into shock, and passes out. She's rushed to the towns local hospital. The following morning a group of kids find her son's body between two large 20 foot Boulder's in a rock quary surrounded by the towns local river- They were out there fishing and swimming, Her sons chest is slashed open. It's pattern matches the ones on her mother and in her daughters crib. Krueger is re-arrested, but his lawyer pushes for harassment charges. He tells them that they can't hold him. He is released, but told to not to leave town. The news of all this circulates throughout the town. Nancy is placed into the local hospitals ICU unit.. They take her out for a cigarette break. When she reads the headline of "Kruger Set Free" off of a newspaper someone else is reading on bench next to the smoking area. She loses it... She runs across the parking lot. The nurses chase her. She races into oncoming traffic, right into an oncoming car. She dies in the ER. This was the last straw on the camels back. Some people in the town including the sheriff decide it's time to carry through with some Vigilante Justice. They Attack Kruger at work, and set him on fire. He takes forever to die. (Krueger works at the town cotton mill) His body is buried in the towns local junkyard by the sheriff, The baby is found in the storm shelter behind his house. Outside big named media invade the Town. They ask the town folks were they think Krueger might be. Everyone thinks he left town.. Those behind his death keep it a secret. Several years pass. I've said it before I'll say it again. ROBERT ENGLUND IS FREDDY KRUEGER-the only choice. I will remind everyone once more that Robert Englund's comments about possibly being to old to return have to be taken in context. He was not offered the role. All he (and the rest of us) knew for sure was PD's statement that he would not be cast for the role. He has NEVER said in any press I've seen that he wouldn't return to the role.

bbedwards 1:16am, January 8, 2009

Disanti-I have to say I am completely offended by your reaction to the Englund support. 'one time to ignore the fans Brad'? Phhh. Who appointed you?

bbedwards 1:37am, January 8, 2009

And does anyone honestly think Englund can't do 'scary' anymore? I mean, he didn't write or direct the films. Freddy was turned into a caricature by 'the powers that be' to broaden the audience and keep the merchandise flying off the shelves. I'm pretty confident Freddy won't be killing anyone in a nintendo game or anything corny like that in the new one, no matter who's playing the role.

billbeast 2:01am, January 8, 2009

For the Nightmare on Elm street, bring Robert England back, he is the original Freddy and no one can replace him, but as this is modern times maybe its time for a new one. The main character should be smart and have sluttish friends so they can get butchered. I want the dreams to feel real or else its just to cheesy.

realsolution#9 4:42am, January 8, 2009

Re: The Unborn... it has been given a '15' certificate here in the UK which means I now have high hopes for it, because the PG-13 rating was starting to make me think we would be seeing a '12A' slapped on it. As for scary imagery over blood, I totally agree regarding The Ring (again another '15' here in the UK) which was unbelievably scary and truth be told I'm surprised it didn't get an '18'. As for the NOES remake... If you're doing a standard remake, then please bring back Englund as Freddy. However, if you're doing a prequel showing Freddy before his death, etc then I don't mind who you go with as long as he's a decent actor. And although it's slightly off topic, I'd love to know how The Birds remake is coming along???

disanti 12:09pm, January 8, 2009

It's just my opinion bbedwards. If you are offended easily, I suggest you stay of this site then haha. I stand by that thought and just because a few more people on this part of the site want freddy, the forums are saying otherwise. As a producer of a project, you can't have fans hold your hand the whole way. Sometimes you have to say thanks, but no thanks. All of this 'send us your input' stuff is really nice, but in the end it's their project and they have to make the decision. All this I love Robert talk will make that decision hard, but in the end you have to ignore it if you want to make something original. I'm not appointing myself as anyone, just stating my opinion just like you did yours. Offended? Spare me.

bbedwards 1:53pm, January 8, 2009

I am not easily offended 1st of all (I AM a fan of Horror...). And your opinion is not what I called into question. We've already had a HEALTHY debate on the comments of the previous PD post. I take offense at your righteous attitude. Shown again in your last post. You are so sure that YOUR vision is the only way to go. I mean, you have the nerve to act as though you're speaking on behalf of the producers of the film! HA! Even funnier is your comment above about ignoring the fans and making something original-THIS IS A FUGGIN REMAKE/REBOOT/WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT!!! IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO MAKE SOMETHING 'ORIGINAL' IF YOU ARE DOING A REMAKE. All that IS POSSIBLE FOR CERTAIN is fuggin up all that was great about the characters/story, all depending on how far they decide to take it. I only chose to participate in the discussion because there is actually someone involved with the film who's listening, and I wanted my voice to be heard. PD-If you want to make a 'classic' NOES film that is SURE to please old fans and new alike you know what I think needs to happen. Otherwise it will just be 'well, it's another shitty Freddy movie'. And it will be too late.

disanti 2:21pm, January 8, 2009

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14 42656#post1442656 if you want to argue take it in there. I'm sorry though, but what I just said was not righteous at all. I didn't say my opinion was right or wrong, I just said it was my opinion. I DO believe it to be right, but I'm not cramming it down your throat. I've said on this whole blog what I would like to see. Others are just saying it HAS TO HAVE Englund. I don't believe that to be the case and I am not making demands, only suggestions. And you can do something original with the story and the chracters, that is not impossible. Sure it's cut from the same cloth but it doesn't mean you need to make the same dress. A different story can be told in a different style. Maybe a story that doesn't end with Nancy setting boobie traps. How about that? I think I've been pretty humble in my suggestions, so please, once again, spare me.

jerryolsson 2:31pm, January 8, 2009

I'm pretty sure they will pull an great story. Nothing can beat the original, but I look forward to the Elm Street remake. And about a month left to the Friday the 13th remake hitting the theaters!

disanti 2:38pm, January 8, 2009

Wait a second is Wesley Strick still officially on this as a writer? That's what IMDB says. We def need up to date info on this.

Sephit 4:01pm, January 8, 2009

I am an amateur filmmaker and I think it’s great that you are involving the fans for this remake. Everyone has their opinions and these are mine. I agree with others in saying that Nancy, her friends, and their parents from the original should definitely be in the remake. There should be a bit of back-story but not enough to make anyone sympathize with Freddy. Freddy is out for revenge against these parents that burned him alive and nightmares are his own creations. I really don’t mind if Robert Englund plays him again as long as the new freddy is different looking and more realistic looking than the sequels. The original had it right when they made Freddy a shadowy figure that said few lines and seemed to enjoy the chase. This comes to the part that made Freddy less scary because Freddy would get close to his victims in the original and then they would be kind of wrestling and those were scenes that really didn’t help out the character. Freddy needs to be shown very little in the film and be a shape shifter. Think about it, he owns the dream world, he can do whatever he wants to those teens in the dream world. His glove itself can become a character in scenes. I had what I think may have been a dream when I was a child that there was a movie set in which there was a glove that was much like Freddy’s and it came alive and started crawling on its blades and then hoping up and killing someone. I think you could use this for your remake in atleast one of the killings or even Freddy’s first reveal. A character has a dream that he is in Freddy’s boiler room and they see the glove just lying on the edge of a wooden table as they walk by and suddenly the glove starts moving and then gets up crawling on the blades towards them, they turn to run but suddenly there’s a wall right behind them that wasn’t there before and they turn back around only to be stabbed to death by the glove and then Freddy appears with the glove attached to him letting it be known that he was there the whole time but he chose to only let the glove be shown during the killing. I think something along those lines would be a great way to show him materialize and to show his true form and skills. As for the sweater, it would be hard to make a better sweater than the one in the original. I did however get a chance to read the script from the original film and in the script his sweater was originally a dirty red and yellow sweater, so that is one way to change the look but still pay homage to the original idea. I myself have a green and grey striped sweater that is lying on a chair in my room and that could be a nice change as well but I really enjoyed the no stripes on the sleeves in the original. To make Freddy scary again will actually be a more simple task than it seems because with Freddy less of seeing him is more frightening in my opinion. Make Freddy more of a ghastly ghost-like monster that materializes slowly more and more each time he is shown as the film progresses. In the original script when Freddy stretches out through the ceiling above Nancy when she is falling asleep, the wall itself becomes the color of his sweater and that could also be something to think about. Since he was burned alive, it could be something to think about when coming up with his outfit. His glove and hat could have melted onto him somehow becoming part of him in some scenes. These are all thoughts of mine that could help Freddy to be scary again in a new and better way and I wish you luck with making a great remake. -Joseph “Sephit” Martinez

ODM 8:14pm, January 8, 2009

Brad, firstly just let me say it is SO refreshing that us fans can come here and put forward out ideas for your future films, i am certain this will only prove to serve the films well and bring the best possible results. i have already commented in the previous post about some of my thoughts on ANOES, but one thing i would love to add... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, can you hire a director that takes a serious, more traditional approach to filmmaking? by that i mean, none of the flashy, mtv shaky camera, stupidly fast editing style that is ruining films recently. one thing cinema should do is draw you in, grab you and not let you (not for 1 seconds) remember that you are watching a film. all those overblown "stylistic" elements of shaky cameras and quick-fire editing only draw to snap the viewer straight out of the film and start watching the surrounding walls in the cinema! gladly, from your TCCM remake etc it seems that you are not really buyers of that style, but would hate to see ANOE become yet another annoyingly unwatchable, choppy pile of flashing nonsense. i'd LOVE to see a film with the visual style (and restraint of something like "let the right one in"), just beautiful and highly intelligent. make the film dark, sinister, scary and brooding and leave behind all the trashy elements that swamped the later ANOES films.

ODM 8:23pm, January 8, 2009

sorry about the typos lol i forgot to add.... i think it would be superb to not reveal freddy too soon. keep him in the shadows, keep his dialogue to a minimum so as to not let us see or hear too much from him, it would make it so much creepier. one thing i was disappointed with the amityville remake was being able to "see" the ghosts. the main thing in horror that REALLY frightens most people i know (including me, a HARDCORE horror fan, that is RARELY scared) is the unknown. NOT being able to see or identify with something trying to kill us is 1000x scarier than an actor with makeup. as soon as you see too much of that, bang, NOT scary anymore. i totally understand that freddy is the main deal with ANOES and you have to show him, but try to be clever with it and hold back on just HOW often and clearly you do see him. he would be far scarier to the characters in the film and us as an audience if he stays hidden in the darkness as much as possible. leave as much as possible to our imaginations.

CMYKid 9:59pm, January 8, 2009

It should have strong sexual undertones like the first 2 movies. With regards to Freddy, less will definitely be more. NOES 1 & 2 are still the creepiest ones in my opinion. It should take place in present day but go easy on the CGI for the dream sequences. I don´t want it look like a PS3 video game. Keep it classy guys. I think Zack Snyder´s Dawn of the Dead is a good example of a remake done well. Rob Zombie totally ruined Halloween... I can´t believe they hired him for the sequel.

voorhees213 12:32am, January 9, 2009

Ok, this is worse than one of those "Kane Hodder is the ONLY Jason" boards - get over it people, Mr. Englund's time as Freddy has passed. Don't get me wrong, I know he IS Freddy, but a great performance by any actor, plus the makeup, will make a great Freddy. AND, this is a remake - remaking a movie with the same exact people kinda defeats the purpose, no? I agree with some other posters out there (disanti, for one)- don't listen, Brad - find us a new Freddy.

ChrisV 8:09am, January 9, 2009

Please Dont re-make Nightmare... I know it probably means a new car in your driveway and money in your pocket, but these films mean a lot to some people and there is no way in hell you are going come close to the power of the original. Just like Texas, And Friday. These films are being done ONLY for money, and if they werent you would be spending the millions that it takes to produce these pictures on original content.

evilgooey 9:17am, January 9, 2009

The Friday the 13th films were always my favorite growing up... and the Nightmare movies were always movies I would see, because there was no other horror film out at the time. I do remember liking the first 2 ANOES films, and the third is where the creative, over the top kills took over. My only advice... make sure Freddy uses his glove. And ease up on the one-liners. You can't cut them out completely, because of the mythic character Robert Englund created, but a funny serial killer is not what the horror community wants. Leave that up to the Scary Movie guys over at Dimension. Any "joke" should be mean spirited and tasteless. I would hate to see a burnt up Jeff Foxworthy performance as the main man. That being said... I am soooo stoked for the new Friday. I'll be there several times on opening day. Thanks!

disanti 12:52pm, January 9, 2009

Good looking out voorhees213, but I will say the hardcore NOES fans have more a gripe than the Kane Hodder Fans. Englund created the characters personality and shaped it since day one, so I really do understand that RE love going on. I am just not going to stand for the people who are going to boycott a remake because one the original actor isn't in it. If you want RE back, call for a sequel, it would fit better. It's just so tough to see the same actor try to restart the story, I feel like it will be too familiar in place where it has to feel somewhat new. I've also said it before, if they did cast him, does he have the opened mindedness to change the character up? Is there anything new he can bring to the character or is his idea tank for Freddy empty? Anyway, the moral of the story is that if RE is not freddy, we're all still going to survive. We have box sets with his work at our disposal anytime we want. I want something brand new, not refurbished. My only real message is that either way, give it a chance. I'm pulling for a new actor, but I'm not going to boycott the film or write if off as automatically being shitty. That's just being thick heading and unreasonable.

disanti 12:54pm, January 9, 2009

...automatically being shitty if RE reprises the roll*

freddyzchic19 3:10pm, January 9, 2009

I don't think writing this movie off because Robert Englund is not playing Freddy is unreasonable at all. After he, he has been the ONLY Freddy in 25 years which is saying a lot. It is very reasonable. I honestly don't see how you can title something as A nightmare on elm street when the main character in the film is just pure imitation. It's false advertisement and it will upset the majority of Freddy fans out there. If Robert is not playing Freddy in this, don't refer to it as a Remake or Reboot of A nightmare on elm street. You can make a movie that takes a lot of the same ideas from the Nightmare films, but call it something different. I think that you need to take the majority of the fans opinions into consideration if you want to be popular, Brad. Otherwise, you're going to gain a bad reputation as filmmakers of horror movies very quickly. Many people are not big fans of your past horror remakes. It's time to start trying something different and this so called Nightmare "reboot" is a great place to start. The way i see it is you have two options. If you consider my opinion and actually try to do something really great for the majority of fans then you will have made a great mark in the future of horror for generations to come, but if you decide to just continue the same stuff as you have in the past then you're going to be slowing making horror films that will become popular among teens and disliked by most adults who grew up with horror movies. Your main audience should be adults here and as an adult fan of Nightmare on elm street, i am saying to you that you should either not remake it, have Robert Englund play Freddy Krueger (even make a sequel or prequel instead), or call this film something different. It's up to you of course, but this is a very Important decision that could have some real Impact. I know many people are very appreciative that you're listening to fans on this. Please do not disappoint us. I hope that you won't ignore a lot of comments here and that you'll make something great.

disanti 3:31pm, January 9, 2009

I think that's an ignorant statement. Of all movie characters over the years, why is it that Freddy Krueger be played by anyone else? RE did a great job, but it's not like he's been bringing in Oscars for every performance in a NOES movie. Someone else out there has the ability to capture what it is to be Freddy, I am sure of it. I could just as well say if Robert is playing Freddy don't call it a remake cause it's gonna end up being the same thing I all ready have on my shelf. A remake = a new cast. Think about it like a Broadway play. There are shows that have been running for YEARS with the casts constantly changing. Sure, some are better than others, but at the same time they are not just letting anyone suit up and go out there. Of course they want to make a great film, but they can still do that without RE as Freddy. Think of all the arguments we can get into if they hire a really good actor to play Freddy. The guy pulls it off better than anyone thought. Then we can debate who you prefer...that'd be fun. A new actory can bring their own vision to Freddy as well. Why, in a remake, would you want the same exact thing? If that's the case, why remake the movie? You make no sense.

Thermo 6:33pm, January 9, 2009

First, cast Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Those waiting for another Freddy movie want to see the real deal, not a piss-poor imitation. Billy Bob Thornton? Freddy Krueger? Oh god no. Secondly, make sure the movie focuses more on Freddy killing people than Freddy's backstory. You would thus avoid what made 2 and 5 lame movies -- not enough Freddy and too much discussion between teenagers researching his origins. No one goes to see a horror movie for the dialogue. Third, I wouldn't make a prequel that focuses on pre-burned to death Freddy. I believe someone said this before, but no one wants to see an eccentric guy killing young children. Bring back the immortal who hunts down the descendants of those who killed him. As for how Freddy should be depicted, I think a balance between the darker, quieter Freddy of 1+2 and the wiseass Freddy of 3-6 is preferable. I may be in the minority here, but when I was a young child, the quieter Freddy didn't really scare me. The witty Freddy who exploits your fears and can do anything to you in your dreams, all the while laughing his ass off at your suffering, is the Freddy that scared me. Notwithstanding that, even the Freddy of 1 and 2 had a few lines. Please do not attempt to kill off this aspect of Freddy so as to appease those who prefer the "strong silent types" of horror like Jason and Michael. Lastly, cast Robert Englund.

BB MACK 10:20pm, January 9, 2009

The only thing that I am worried about is the characterisation of the teenagers that will appear in the new NOES film. I was most disappointed with the characters in FVJ. They were unlikeable, sex, drink and drug fulled individuals who I was happy to see the back off. These days there are no heros like Nancy, Kristen or Alice. People who you could root for, care for, look up to. Characters who were brave and fought the good fight against evil. They weren't perfect but they weren't shallow, mind numbing zombies. So I pray that the "Nancy" of the remake is likeable and not annoying as Lori from FVJ.

NancyThompsonsArmy 11:55pm, January 9, 2009

i'm not sure how i feel about a "re-imagining" of Nightmare. i kinda dig Wes's original take on chinese teenagers dreaming themselves to death (i.e. the article he got the idea from; not a racial comment). i get needing to move on from Robert as Fred. he'll always be "THE" Freddy to me though. the newbie will have some large boots to fill. i may be in the minority here with this idea, but, what the heck. anyone think a collaboration with Chris Carter on this new interpretation of Nightmare might be kinda interesting. Teenagers claiming that a strange man in a dirty hat and glove with knives haunts their dreams trying to murder them....i don't know...sounds like an X-file to me.

Howard_H_Leech 12:42am, January 10, 2009

PLEASE READ THIS. Okay, just hear me out on this one. We all know that Robert Englund has officially retired from the role of Freddy. That's okay. He also said that he would love to do a cameo in your version. I humbly suggest that he should have a cameo as Freddy BEFORE he died. When Freddy's origin is discovered, instead of just talking about it, there should be a flashback sequence showing Freddy getting burned by the parents of Elm Street. I believe that this is a good idea because: a) It would give Englund the chance to have one last bow in the role. b) It would satisfy the fans' desire to see him as Freddy again. and most importantly c) It would create a smoother transition from Englund to the new actor, who would play Freddy in the burn make-up. If you have read this, I thank you for your patience and hope that this idea is given serious consideration.

TheMadMime 6:39am, January 10, 2009

Not that I want Freddy to return in the form of a remake or "reimagining" or what have you, but if he absolutely MUST, there are a few things Platinum Dunes needs to take into consideration if they want to make a successful movie... 1. Humor is ESSENTIAL. Yes, from part 3 and on they overdid it, but when you look at the series as a whole, they did nothing that hadn't already been established with the character. Freddy ALWAYS said one-liners. "I'll split you in two!" "I'm your boyfriend now, Nancy!" "This...is God!" All one-liners, but made chilling by line delivery. Now, take any of those lines and place them into a Nightmare movie toward the middle of the series and you'd have Freddy deliver it while slapping his knee and followed by HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! See the difference? Humor is Freddy's thing. Only, in the first two, he said things that made HIMSELF laugh. From part 3 on, he said things that made the audience laugh, and I believe that's where he lost his way in many people's minds. Without one-liners, Freddy is just a mindless killing machine, no different than Myers or Jason. 2. Please do NOT make Freddy some hulking wrestler type guy. Don't be afraid to make an average guy scary. Believe me, there are more average type people out there than there are hulking, roid-built types like Jason in the F13 remake or Myers in the Rob Zombie Halloween abomination...err...remake. 3. Don't be afraid of "fantasy". The fantasy element is what made the Nightmare series such a draw and set it apart from the rest of the slasher fare of the early 80s. Embrace the supernatural elements. Don't get bogged down by the "we have to be realistic" thoughts that are killing the horror genre today. Give us a scary, supernatural slasher full of wild imagery and disturbing concepts. Blow our minds like Craven did so long ago. Anything less would be...well, what would the point be in making anything less?

DAKAZA 12:33pm, January 10, 2009

The glove is one of the most iconic props in horror movie history. Therefore, you must keep it pretty much the same (like you did with Jason's mask). It should remain a simple leather glove with a metal armature. In my opinion, the idea of having it somehow melted to his hand is a terrible concept for this movie. A removable home-made glove is much more realistic and frightening. This is part of what makes Freddy's character so unique. Thousands of characters have claws for hands but only one has the bizarre handmade razor glove!

Фредди 2:28pm, January 10, 2009

If you do not believe the to fact that ONLY ROBERT Englund is necessary to fans then come HERE(http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/nonewnightmare/sign atures-21.html) and themselves you will make sure in this.

I was just wondering who u guy's had in mind to play Freddy...if u don't have anyone in mind, maybe i can make a suggestion...Johnny Depp...i was watching "SWEENY TODD" the other day and i kept telling myself that Johnny Depp whould make a good Freddy...and plus not only would he be returning to the genre that got him started, but he would be returning to the movie that got him started back in 1984...just a thought

magnaderalpha 10:36pm, January 10, 2009

Regarding Englund as Freddy. I'd love him to don the makeup and fedora, but I'd much more prefer it to be for a NOES sequel taking place AFTER Freddy's Dead(and FvJ). In my heart, that's actually something I'd prefer OVER a remake. Maybe a few more installments in the original series, then REALLY bring it to an end(no, Freddy's Dead didn't end ANYTHING), and ask Craven to write and direct the final NOES movie(have him bring an end to his creation, just like Clive Barker's doing with Pinhead in the Scarlet Gospels). But, since that's my little "dream", it's not that realistic, especially how Hollywood's treating the horror franchises of yesteryear. Hence it's merely wishful thinking. And because that's not possible, I think it's only fitting that Englund shouldn't be Freddy in the remake. That has NOTHING to do with him NOT being scary anymore. His portrayal in New Nightmare came AFTER goofball Freddy, yet he was pretty freaky and dark! He's an actor, he can do whatever the part needs be. So his acting skill is not a question to me, it's the overall reality of where we are in horror culture and pop culture, and how this project will likely be addressed. Of course, personally, I will always identify Freddy as being Robert Englund. But that's beside the point. Though the question lingers what road you guys will take with the NOES reboot? The TCM road(keep a similar premise to the original movie, as well as keep the original movie's setting in the early 70s) or the Ft13 road(totally new premise revolving around Ft13 franchise, and setting it in modern times)? A part of me would love this movie to take place in the 80s!!

spiral 3:20pm, January 11, 2009

What else can i say? I agree with the idea that only Robert Englund can play Freddy Krueger. I always thought that if something that has rescue the bad sequels (2-6)of NOES is the interpretation of Robert Englund, and if in this new movie he is not present we will be many unhappy fans. Excuse my grammatical errors i'm just a girl of 19 years old from Mexico.

phoenison 4:31pm, January 11, 2009

Damn, there is so much hatin' in these comments! People typing in ALL CAPS, claiming "No Robert England" = "No ticket purchase"... Brad, just do what you've been doing! You know how to put it down... take the constructive criticism that fits with your vision. I want another Nightmare movie with a re-freshed, frightening vision of Freddy... you'll deliver on that, I have no doubt. Completely unrelated to NOES, I think a reality show should be created for all these haters and they should be given the chance to make a small film or trailer and present it to a huge audience for feedback. Then the haters could feel the heat for once. I mean, damn, the poor guy hasn't even had time to breathe life into this yet and ya'll are all up in his face! Goodness! These haters need to drink some prune juice or something. :P

ani_coolgirl 5:57pm, January 11, 2009

I'm glad you appreciate what online fans say. I registered just so I could throw in my two cents. Here I go: 1) What made the original film was that it was not just a horror film - it was a psychological drama. Sleep deprivation is something Nancy suffers through just as much as the death of her friends and the nightmares themselves, which all sums up to very slow and painful torture. Freddy's power lies not only in the ability to kill but to wear down and toy with his victims. Like you say, it does not take blood and guts to make a good horror movie. NoES needs its gore, but the manipulation of and playing off of fear should be the focus. The problem with the sequels is that they went far, far away from this concept. 3 and New Nightmare regained this somewhat, but not quite to the extent of the first film. 2) I love Robert Englund. I really do. He embodies Fred Krueger. However, one man does not make a movie. It doesn't matter that Mr. Englund was in all the sequels - they still pretty much sucked. Finding an actor that embodies *your* vision of Freddy (which will hopefully return to the grittier, scarier versions of from first movie and New Nightmare, rather than the joker from the rest) is much more important than pleasing the fans. 3) Just as important, if not more so, than the casting and writing of Freddy is the casting and writing of Nancy. What makes Nancy so unique is that not only is she a survivor (which many horror movie “Final Girls” can claim), but also a fighter. She doesn’t take Freddy’s nonsense lying down – she retaliates. She’s smart and clever and not once relies on a man to save her (with the possible exception of her father). In short, she’s my hero. Please make her competent and resourceful, not screaming eye-candy. Those are what I feel are the three most important issues, though I’m sure there’s a lot more that I could address. Most of it really comes down to good writing, but it takes a lot of people to make a movie and I just hope everything comes together in the end. NoES is the first horror movie series I’ve really loved and I just hope that something good can revitalize it for my generation (yup, I totally missed the 80s). Good luck.

miter55 10:08pm, January 11, 2009

I am a HUGE NOES fan, so much so that I may have almost every bit of Freddy collectibles that have been released. I'm hardcore. I can honestly say that I am SO EXCITED about a remake, even though it will not have Robert in it. Why? Because a remake is a retelling or a re-envisioning of the original story. I'm extremely curious to see what new spin is put on Freddy. Let's face it, he became a punchline in the later films, as did Leatherface, Myers, and Voorhees. Look what the remakes have done for them! Leatherface became totally scary again, as did Myers. I can't wait to see what they've done with Jason, but I can say that the trailer kicks ass, and if it's any indication of the final movie...i'll see it many times in the theater. I can't wait to see the new spin they put on Krueger, i'm guessing he will once again be truely frightening!

miter55 10:11pm, January 11, 2009

Plus...if you really don't think anyone else could take Rober's place playing Freddy...Then don't see the remake! I know there is a whole new generation that is salivating to see this remake, and as someone who grew up with Freddy...I'm stoked to see his rebirth!

Firecracka 11:24pm, January 11, 2009

It seems like everywhere I read everyone thinks it is a horrible idea for a remake of A Nightmare ton Elm Street. I can see why people would think that. Hollywood should not touch a masterpiece, right. Well my opinion is not every remake of horror films have not been bad. I think this remake is really interesting, and has so many possabillities if done right. Here is what I think they should do if they want this movie to work. First off I want to say when I first saw the original, I was about 5. It scared the hell outta me. No movie that I have ever seen has ever frightened me like that. 1. This move needs to spooky as well as gorey. I have found out in my experience of watching hooror movies. That truley creepy movies where made before the 90's. There have not been any movies made in the past 20 years that have give u that spooky feeling. I think people will want alot of a gore also. Some really crazy, creative, stuff nobody's ever seen before. They would have to make it very realistic though. Just a combination of a really creepy vibe with a plenty of gore that's very realistic. 2. It needs to have a dynamite script, that is very rich in charicter. It should keep you on the edge of your seat. I think one of the most important things audiences need to really get to know the charicters before the climax of the film. Freddy should have alot of back story. We should see how and when Freddy was born, when he was in school, when he was a child killer when he was human and when he was burned alive, and finally when he was a dream killer. So basicly a very good a script. Because the story is catchy anyways. If the fimakers and writers included all this it would not be a short film. If the film where 2 and a half hour movie it woulden't hurt my feelings. 3. The acting should be perfect. I'm not saying to have alot of mainstream stars. Actually I think no one anybody has ever heard of should be in it. But for god's sake make sure there acting is good. I want to believe there fear. The Freddy should be half and half. What I mean by that is they should keep Freedy classic but upgrade him more 21st centery. This is what I think would be cool about the new Freddy. He should be a older man (Freddy in the original was supposed to be like a 60 year old man), and maybe modify the glove A LITTLE. Also PLEASE make Freddy scary as far as the makeup I think what makes a truely scary monster is the eyes, and body language. Freddy should have more of a demonic look with strange body language. 4. Last but not least is a far as the rating. I REALLY HOPE it won't have a pg-13 rating. That will be such a waste. This film should push the limit. It should be in a league of it's own (extreme hooror) With extreme gore (reallistic and original and), graphic sexuality and nudity. Please do no get me wrong when I say this. I think this film should touch every part of fear for every gender. I think if it had alot of sex and nudity it would attract alot of alot more audience. I'm think worst than Cannibal Halocaust. A VERY GRAPHIC FILM PERIOD!!!

disanti 1:23am, January 12, 2009

TV spots for F13h up. Does Jason have a workshop or something in that cave? haha. Sharpening the machete, the lights, where's he getting the power?

francesco 5:47am, January 12, 2009

the tv spot is AMAZING!!! is it true that it has to make more than 50 millions to get a sequel???? 'cause we want a sequel!!!

disanti 11:57am, January 12, 2009

You know what, I thought about it. He can get equipment, lights, and a generator from the the camp since it's been shut down/abandoned. That's a pretty good touch IMO. Trying to explain things in F13th films can be such a bitch sometimes, but that makes my life easier when someone tries to get wise with me! haha Also, I saw BD had their pics for the NOES cast. Jackie Earle Hayley as Freddy would actually be a great choice if he's available. Besides that, are you going to have casting/extra calls for NOES here in LA? Where do you think you are going to be filming? I know you usually do your filming in TX, but NOES is more of a suburbia type setting, any chance you are sticking around LA for this one?

darkknight59 1:07pm, January 12, 2009

for the new freddy flick u gotta make it gruesome. make freddy the way wes craven wanted him to be a silent killing creature with fangs sticking out of his lips dripping with puss. get a talented actor 2 play him like bill mossely. describe freddy as the man he was before he got burned and became silent. violent no cheesy 1 liners with blood. show him as a kid, then teenager which led him to become a child molestor. but don't overload on nudity and sex. if u make it scary, suspensful, graphic and gory sex wont matter. if u make it like that it cold be the best since the original

darkknight59 1:10pm, January 12, 2009

also dont show his entire face only gloves until the climax then spring out the new violent sinister freddy. make it dirty, graphic, disgusting, frank, and violent because it wold be great for the story in a very beautiful way.

darkknight59 1:12pm, January 12, 2009

but dont make it like the unborn cause no offfense, it doesn't look good at all. it looks corny and cheesy with bad dialogue

I was surprised when I saw the preview for Friday the 13th for the first time. There were certain characteristics of Jason Voorhees that I really wanted to see in the film - but judging by the preview he's a bit different. 1st off - not bringing Kane Hodder back? I think that was a mistake. I'm not saying that this new actor isn't going to do a good job, I'm just stating the fact that Kane Hodder was the best Jason EVER. Bar none. I believe the best "look" Jason ever had throughout the series was in part 9: Jason Goes to Hell. Also, Jason running? Jason never has to "chase" after his prey. That was one of the scariest traits about him, you'd see the victim running like shit (normally followed by a trip/fall) only to have Jason appear in front of them ... allow the decapitation to commence! I will go see this movie for the sheer fact that I feel it's my obligation as a long-time Jason fan TO go see it. But, I'm a picky bitch - I'll be comparing everything from costumes, to actors, to the score - right down to how Jason moves, breathes and looks in the film.

disanti 6:49pm, January 12, 2009

You lost your cred when you stated the best look for jason was JGTH. That was the WORST LOOK EVER. Kane Hodder, thanks, but no thanks. He had his time, it's over. Derek Mears looks like he knows what he's doing and has respect for the series. Jason Ran in the first 3 movies he was in. Multiple times and he had to chase every survivor character for at least 10 mins. People tripping and falling is retarded/unrealistic...how many times a day do you just trip over your own feet for no reason? I have a feeling Mears is going to own in his performance. The look, I'm partial to the Part IV look, so I'm not the biggest fan of the big jacket. Who knows, maybe it will grown on me as the movie goes on. Seriously though, JGTH the best look? C'mon.

HATCHETFACE24 7:23pm, January 12, 2009

THE BEST CHOICE TO PLAY FREDDY IS: BILL MOSELEY

disanti 9:02pm, January 12, 2009

This is from an interview with Englund by the way: "He says he's too old to play Freddy -- apparently he hasn't been following the geriatric casting trends in Hollywood lately -- and joked that the new film's title would have to be "Freddy vs. Viagra" (har har). He did, however, mention that he'd be down for a cameo."

Фредди 8:59am, January 13, 2009

Yes, but he also said following: "Perhaps, I and Freddy would agree again to play, but only provided that for Action-stages me they will employ doubler."

disanti 11:57am, January 13, 2009

Well, I guess we're all just going to have to play the waiting game. No big deal, I'm seeing it no matter what.

LivingDeadGirl27 1:11pm, January 13, 2009

Disanti - I was merely stating my opinion. I loved Jason's look in JGTH, quick second being JTM. You stating TLC is your fav look - that's your opinion, I think it's a great look in that one as well - just not my personal favourite. I think this new actor is going to do great, but in the end I prefer Kane's performance as Jason over anyones. I know that Jason chased through the first 2-3 movies he was in - I think he was ten times scarier when he just stalked rather than ran. Robert Englund also stated during the commentary of FvJ when asked if he would return that, "The Glove still fits." Granted, this was quite a few years ago... I, personally, would LOVE to see Robert return as Freddy. I admit, I'd be quite disappointed if he didn't - but I'd eventually see it.

disanti 1:23pm, January 13, 2009

Ha, just giving you some shit, don't take it personally. I just don't here too many good things about anything having to do with JGTH.

CMYKid 8:43am, January 14, 2009

Cast Daveigh Chase or Mia Wasikowska as Nancy guys! They´re pretty good actresses and still in their teens. Don´t give us twentysomething year-old actors playing teenagers.

Craig_666 11:16am, January 14, 2009

It would be nice if Brad Fuller made some sort of comment as to our opinions of the remake or whatever it's going to be. The only bright light with a remake is that hopefully all the films in the original series (1984-1994) will get the special edition treatment on DVD. I would love to see a two disc set of each film in the series.

RageOfStreets 3:02pm, January 14, 2009

I think this is a good list of suggestions for the ANOES remake: 1)Wes Craven directing...yes he did the original, but the original doesn't need improvement and doing something completely different is just a cover to avoid the stigma of a sequel. I'd rather see Craven re-imagine his masterpiece than some film newbie. This includes Brad Fuller. 2)Minimal to zero CGI. The last two decades have proved that less is more. CGI does not make films scarier and dream squences involving obnoxious CGI fantasy realms or bizarre body trandformations on Freddy is just laughable. 3)Charles Bernstein on soundtrack. The original soundtrack is memorable. Having just another tired Hollywood, tacked-on soundtrack is not going to work. The fans WANT to hear the music and not just in the trailer or a brief variation. 4)No cameos in random roles they didn't play in the original. If the remake is not going to have anything to do with the original, then do not insult audiences with distracting cameos. It does not make the film better, unless your goal is to do a parody or use the original film as a crutch for story-telling. 5)Exact same house. It's just as a iconic as Freddy. 6)No cheap, sequel-intended Bob Shaye ending that contradicts the entire movie. The original film was all a dream. The ending completely bastardizes this. Horror films do NOT need sequel-suggestive endings. If it's going to get a sequel, it's going to get a sequel. Individual films do not need to be reminded of this. There's a difference between a cliff-hanger and a cliche sequel-suggestive ending. 7)No Henny Youngman routines for Freddy. Keep him dark. 8)No dream sequences that rely on product placement or marketing of current pop culture or technology. ie. iPods, youtube, video games, iPhones. 9)No casting of any actors featured in TV shows, especially the CW. Yes, I realize PD is Hollywood-oriented, but teens are going to see this remake based on name alone. You DO NOT need to cast familiar CW actors to attract general audiences. 10)No casting of musicians, anybody promoted by MTV, or anybody from American Idol. 11)If the "I'm your boyfriend now, Nancy" scene is rehashed in her bedroom, no cell phone. She has to use an actual landline. If using a landline is too old fashioned for teen-oriented audiences then DO NOT recreate this scene. Stamping a cell phone does not have the same impact on fear that destroying a connection via phone jack does. 12)All dream sequences have to appear as if they are in the real world so that we never know when the characters are dreaming until Freddy makes an appearance. Again, CGI-oriented dream sequences are not scary. Case in point, the CGI snake/worm Freddy in FvJ was obnoxious and laughable. 13)Non-recognizable actor in Freddy's role in order to reduce the distraction of replacement and keep the focus on the darker aspects of his character. I know this is a Hollywood remake, but it's not necessary to try and top Englund's icon status with a familiar A-list or TV actor. If you want this film to be scary and acceptable to both new and old horror fans, please do not distract from this by casting someone too familiar. Freddy does not need to be a total showcase in this film. Part of the reason the original was successful was because the focus was on the victims and not on Freddy.

RageOfStreets 3:06pm, January 14, 2009

UPDATE to last comment: I meant Marcus Nispel, not Brad Fuller.

marunde666 3:34pm, January 14, 2009

You need to go back to the original concept was Freddy real or just in Nancy's head. Freddy was hardly in the movie which made it scarier. This movie needs to be scary as hell or horror fans will stop going to the theater to see remakes. The majority, all but one or two of them, are nothing compared to the original.

marunde666 4:34pm, January 14, 2009

It will be very hard to recapture the fear I felt in the theater back in 1984 when I saw the original on opening night. The whole point of the first movie was that the audience did not know what was happening or was it real or not. Not trying to sound rude but life was different before ifones, blogs, the internet, etc. Will the writers ruin this movie having Nancy blog to her friends on Myspace about her bad dream? Will she text her friends? STUPID! Very hard to set this movie today because young people do not know what life was like before technology took over. I am not trying to offend anyone under 20 years old but life was different. Also, if people want a prequel rewatch Freddy's Dead. Part of the ending showed how the director interpreted how Freddy became Freddy and it sucked. TCM prequel sucked, Rob Zombie's Halloween sucked, etc.

gr8ride08 5:00pm, January 14, 2009

Well i am a hardcore fan of The Nightmare on Elm Street. You have to have Freddy talking some like things about himself not about the people he is killing. Like Freddy's sayings, like this is god, The only thing to fear is fear himself. If he is imatating someone else then he can talk like in the first film Where he says to Nancy in Tina's voice Nancy save me from Freddy with Robert's voice of the word Freddy. U can have him still cutting his fingers and making fun with his body. I like about using a scene to where he starts the process of becoming freddy with the glove like they did at the beginning of Freddy vs. Jason. Also maybe we need to put a back story of a relative not his mother that nobody heard of with the other movies to add something to the movie. You need to put a new twist that is not with the other movies. I think the fans would be alright with that. Do something like they did in Jason goes to Hell. Do something with a dealing with maybe a sister that will give a main character in the movie some insight to who freddy was in his past with actually taking the movie to his past and let the sister discuss Freddy's past with the main character. If you want more feedback from me. Email me at gr8ride08@gmail.com Thanks to you Platinum Dunes,Thanks Michael

The scene with the family member needs to only happen one time to where a sister talks to the main character about Freddy's turn for the worse. A scene could be about bringing a diary that is found that would explain why the children on Elm Street fear this maniac. Do a person that is the first to die that would have been the main character that outlines Freddy that will be found in the middle of the movie by the main character of the movie.

nicholasdkraft 9:20pm, January 14, 2009

Well, Considering that the whole "Bastard son of 100 maniacs" and "Amanda Kruger" back story didn't come about until "A Nightmare on elm street 3: Dream Warriors",and we have never been given a detailed look in any of the films into that story, I would like to see a half hour to 45 minute detailed prequel/back story at the beginning of the film examining the story of Amanda Kruger becoming pregnant as a result of accidentally being locked in a cage with 100 sex crazed lunatics. This back story should also briefly include a look at the childhood of Freddy Kruger. I know that memory sequences of his childhood were included in "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare", but it wasn't enough. Finally, the back story should also examine his mortal life as a child killer, his conviction, and the parents burning him to death. In the final 90 minutes or 45 minutes of the film we see Freddy as the Dream Stalking entity that he is, killing the teens of springwood off one by one. I concur with a majority of the people who have previously posted comments; Freddy Kruger should be played by Robert Englund. He is Freddy Kruger! He gave an unforgettable personality to the character. I know that you will be introducing Freddy Kruger to a whole new generation of kids who have never heard of or seen the original film or it's sequels and you plan to take this new film in a slightly different direction, but I also know the bottom line is to make money. Why not increase your profits on this film by bringing Robert Englund back as Freddy. By doing this you will be able to get the fans of the original series (who might boycott the film due to Robert Englund not playing Freddy) into the theater to see it along with the new generation of moviegoers. It's a win win situation.

the new friday pictures are great!

Canigetagoodagentplease? 5:05am, January 15, 2009

PLEASE REMEMBER GUYS: THE CORE OF THE STORY is NOT ABOUT FREDDY!!!!! Freddy is the catalyst for the destruction of these people, but it's not about that. It's about a dysfunctional family, the Thompsons, and I don't mean dysfunctional in a Jerry Springer/Maury sort of way. I mean a nice, upper middle class dysfunctional family, an "Ordinary People"/"American Beauty" type of dysfunctional family that is pretty on the outside, but rotting on the inside. This isn't "Friday the 13th" where absolutely nobody cares if you re-imagine it into a vehicle for Marky Mark and the Funky bunch, people actually give a shit about whether THIS movie's any good, and they WILL tell their friends to avoid it if its not. Maybe you guys should have a scene where Nancy is discovered as having illegally bought some "Hypno"-aka Hypnocil, the dream supressant from Nightmare 1, 3, and F.v.J, and she mistakenly thinks Nancy is coping with her friends deaths with drugs. Just throwing it out there. Also, please don't reuse the old Freddy gags from the series, and string 'em together into a greatest hits montage. That's what Youtube is for. Hope the movie turns out great, and btw, you guys are total cocksuckers for going through with this. Lol. No offense.

Canigetagoodagentplease? 5:19am, January 15, 2009

ADDITIONAL NOTE: One of the key differences between "NIGHTMARE" and "FRIDAY" is ITS APPROACH TO THE TEENAGE DEMOGRAPHIC. "Friday" teens are pretty, vapid, and are cast from CW shows. These spoiled, beautiful manniqueins arouse our lust, our envy, and ultimately contempt. We cheer for Jasons evisceration of these fucktards. "Friday" movies are for all the kids who never got to lay the Prom Queen, and take it personally to boot. "Nightmare" teens are SYMPATHETIC. They've been screwed by the older generation, they have to fight to see past its bullshit, and lies, and coverups that resulted in Freddy's endless revenge. To summarize. In a FRIDAY MOVIE: TEENS=DISPOSABLE SHIT. In a NIGHTMARE MOVIE: TEENS=SYMAPTHETIC, and LEGITIMATE IDENTIFICATION FIGURES

If you guys delve too deeply into Freddy´s past you´ll essentially end up ruining it. No backstory/backflashes please.

xvoorheesx 9:48am, January 15, 2009

I understand the difference between PG13 and R rated horror movies, and it isn't JUST about the blood. Language and nudity have more to do with it than violence these days! Anyway...regarding Nightmare...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it an R rating!! Better yet, let me direct it!!! I have a reel....where can I send it to?

lytldoogie 10:37am, January 15, 2009

Hey Brad, Just thought i would give you some feed back regarding A Nightmare on Elm Street. Ive been a huge fan of the franchise for quite sometimenow and what I think the movie possibly needs are elements from the first movie and elements from the third movie the dream warriors. I think that most fans find those two movies to be the best out of the series. What i was proposing is maybe the new film should feature some of the characters with dream powers. It kinda sucks to see the main characters just run away with out any defense. Also after watching the first three films it seems that the films get less darker and more campy. The later films get really rediculous with how freddy is portraid and how unrealistic the characters act in terms of each other.

gr8ride08 11:50am, January 15, 2009

I think another thing u can do with the movie is have the sub main character be a guy that Freddy is trying to take control of so that sub main character can try to kill the main character because the main character is trying to save the children of Elm Street from falling asleep and having it to where they are 2 main characters left at the end of the movie with their lives. I will commit more later. Thanks Platinum Dunes, Thanks Michael

gr8ride08 1:54pm, January 15, 2009

I think the part i talked about with the sub main character that would try to kill the main character. The sub main character's mom could have been part of the Freddy torching because her daughter was abducted by Freddy and killed before he went in front of the jury that set Freddy free on a technicality and tie it into where his mom was the only one that new about the hipnocil and she hide it from the sub main character by putting the hipnocil in his morning drink without him knowing and when she dies he has been so drugged up for so long that he becomes a very good target for Freddy to try to make him try to kill the main character. Then use the sister that gives the information to the main character as a way to get the sub main character to relize he can fight back at Freddy and free himself of Freddy's grip. Make most of the movie about the kids of Elm Street falling asleep and dieing but also use this sub main character as a twist into the movie. I think you need to put some new vibe in the movie but also use all the old footage in all the Freddy movies but only use the hipnocil thing with this sub main character. I will comment more at a later time. Thanks Platinum Dunes, Thanks Michael

gr8ride08 2:22pm, January 15, 2009

I think you have to end the movie with the notion that Freddy spirit is still alive with some kind of image off of water or something that is reflective. But before Freddy dies you need to come up with a way that does not deal with Fire only use a weapon or some kind of magic illusion to kill Freddy. Now to the point of who plays Freddy Robert Englund is the smart choice but you need to cast someone with a close to Robert Englunds face design but you need to get someone that has a creppy voice because the voice is what will make Freddy scary again. The most important feature on Englunds face is the nose. His nose has that pointedness to it that just looks evil. I will comment again later. Thanks Platinum Dunes, Thanks Michael

Canigetagoodagentplease? 3:58pm, January 15, 2009

If you make it about Freddy this movie won't have legs. It will be a pointless geek show. It has to be about Freddy being the catlyst for the disinetgration of the Thompsons and their little suburban world.

disanti 8:45pm, January 15, 2009

All the Friday Pics are looking pretty sweet. I think if a few more come out I can make a flip book and just watch the entire movie haha. Something I would like to see in Freddy's new look is some bone showing through. Rougher looking skin, almost like Aaron Eckhart as Two-face. I'm not saying an entire face like that, but a little more realistic burn injuries. I remember how much my girlfriend was shocked by that look in the Dark Knight. I think step one in making Freddy more scary, is taking that rubbery skin look away and making him a little more harsh/real looking.

voorhees213 6:07am, January 16, 2009

Jason looked like a mozzarella stick (or pizza) with a hockey mask in JGTH, & the JTM look was a disaster - unmasked, he looked like a jack o'lantern. Jason's look was (95%)canon until JTM; (almost) every wound was reflected in the next installment, which culminated with TNB (Pt. VII). I almost consider TNB as the last official "Friday the 13th" considering what they did to Jason after that, including FvJ with the fucking jacket. They never seem to fuck up the mask(they almost did w/the slight redesign for Pt VI, & for JX), but they always fuck up everything else. Anyway, to Brad: my .02 says listen to disanti on Freddy. I love the Two-Face-ish idea.

CMYKid 11:41am, January 16, 2009

Let´s be realistic... without Craven´s touch this remake will most likely suck. You guys need to at least consult with Wes and hear he´s opinion. He´s made the best contributions to the franchise. The first Elm Street is a masterpiece... ok, the ending needed tweaking but as a whole it´s still pretty brilliant. The 2nd one which the majority of fans dislike I actually really like. I know it´s majorly flawed but it had some awesome concepts that never quite came to fruition. Although Wes didn´t directly contribute to it, he did give some real important tips with regards to the storyline. Dream Warriors which EVERYONE loves was so spectacular because Wes participated in the story, screenplay and production. My only qualms with part 3 is that it drifted into fantasy land territory and stylistically it looks very 80s(which is kinda cool I guess). Let´s face it... Dream Master and Dream Child were just watered-down, lame versions of Dream Warriors, right? And Freddy´s Dead... well, someone should just have slapped Rachel Talalay the moment she thought of even writing and directing this. She made an utter campy parody of Elm Street and even threw in the gimmicky 3-D ending for good measure. New Nightmare was really clever, a little slow-paced in the beginning and again the ending need major tweaking. Fred was finally scary again! I won´t even go into how god-awful Freddy vs. Jason is. Get Wes involved already!!!

gr8ride08 12:49pm, January 16, 2009

The additional ways that u can make Freddy scary is by having Freddy merge from props. Like merging out of beds, have his glove come out of the sky with his face in the clouds, merging out of the way, merging out of the bathtub. There was alot of good things of what i mean with the Wes Craven version. The original Nightmare on Elm Street and New Nightmare. Thanks Platinum Dunes, Thanks Michael

gr8ride08 12:50pm, January 16, 2009

I meant merging out of the wall instead of way.

disanti 1:59pm, January 16, 2009

Like in Terminator 2? I think the whole Freddy becoming objects thing gets a little hokey after a while. I think he should manipulate the world around the people in the dreams, rising up from the floor or coming out of a wall might be too much. The boiler room is going to be interesting and I can see it becoming an ever changing maze. What was there a second ago is now completely different. By doing that, Freddy it gives off the perception that he he is the one in control. The more he manipulates the characters the more control he has over them.

magnaderalpha 11:48pm, January 16, 2009

darkknight59, the way Craven originally wanted to portray Freddy is irrelevant. He admits that it would've been the WRONG way to go with that character, and was glad how he turned out in the first movie. So to say it correctly, the Freddy we see in the first movie is his IDEAL Freddy. The whole "silent killer with exposed teeth" was just one of many design ideas he threw around, but the fact that he didn't make Freddy like that means that it was something that he felt just didn't click/feel right for the movie. I'm pretty content with how Freddy turned out. Him talking and saying things like, "I'm going to split you in two." made it more scary. Him talking is like saying, "Don't think you're going to face a silent wall like Jason or Michael! I'm Freddy!". And that's how it should be. No "I'm a silent hulking juggernaut that's the equivalent of Jason, but in the dreamworld.

Brad, I am 40 yrs old and have been a fan of freddie since the beginning.. I am dying to see a complete remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street... In my opinion for a spectacular return 1.just keep it rated "R".. 2. get rid of the comical personality freddy has.. 3. make the new freddy pure evil and demonic with no regard for anyone.. 4. make him bigger like voorheez, and supernaturally strong... 5. more realistic gore, dismember and mutilate bodies.. 6. KEEP US EDGE OF THE SEAT...i Love seeing people so into an awesome horror movie that they are jumping out of the seat... including me... 7. keep the storyline serious.. for instance, how the new batman movies are compared to the old ones... 8. have conflicts between freddy and the cast where freddy is getting his share of the beatings, but not to the point where he seems weak in any way.. maybe have a final battle where it is a draw between good and evil, so there is room for a sequel for freddys return... 9. dont have weak actors that typically clumsily fall down and easily fall prey to him.. 10. keep it real, keep the victims sharp , witty and intelligent.

darkknight59 5:06pm, January 17, 2009

ya i understand that too amny flashabcks will spoil it but thats what remakes are for u need to have a backstory get a new freddy bill mossely or ben foster please. no cgi or bad puns. just make him speak veery little but give him attitude not like the attitde he had he doesnt need to have a sense of humor. i'm telling you it has to be a hard r with non stop violence and gore. yes make it realistic as possible even tho he kills in people's dreams. i agree make it suspensful, with twists, come up with a great and clever twist that will shock and suprise everyone. everyone must be smart no dumb stupid chase scenes.

darkknight59 5:10pm, January 17, 2009

i thnk you can amke an instant classic if u dont rush anything, make it disgusting and gross, bloody as ever, smart too. also u dont need nudity to make a great horror movie. thanks for listening and everything lol. get a thoughtful backstory with nonstop scares twists gore and horror. with the biggest surprise ending ever in a horror movie. this may be the best freddy movie too

samuel2292 5:30pm, January 17, 2009

We need Robert Englund back as Freddy Krueger. He IS Freddy.

magnaderalpha 9:13pm, January 17, 2009

You don't NEED nudity, but there should be SOME. Not a LOT, mind you. All NOES movies had nudity(to my knowledge). They were only one scene, mind you, but they were still there. NOES2 had the, er, naked man ass(though the scene where the Freddy tongue is licking Lisa's body goes enough down her chest to see a great boob shot without nipple action)! The movie shouldn't be ripe with raunchy nude scenes. That's Ft13's fair. No, but there still should be some nudity. It doesn't have to be a sex scene, either. The first movie had it's nude scene when Freddy pulled Nancy into the bathtub(nude underwater shot of Heather's body double), and the extremely brief scene(that every NOES fan knows) of Nancy changing in her bedroom(side-boob shot). I think that's something Horror has taken for granted. People don't ONLY get nude when they have sex! People change clothing and take showers! Gotta love the the old classics of the 70s and 80s that had nude changing scenes. It feels more natural, in a way. I was watching the Bill Murray comedy "Stripes" not long ago, and remember that scene where Stillman's spying on the female MPs showering. Nice view, but very short, to the point and handled with class. Then, that's it! One scene that feels naturally weaved in with the others.

irae1984 12:24am, January 18, 2009

I have registered with this site for the sole purpose of posting this comment. I was concerned that there might be some attempt to re-make Nightmare, as it seems all the other classics are being re-made at present. Although I would prefer to see original stories and new horror icons being created, I'll make my piece with the re-imaginings of Jason, Mike Myers, and Freddy. Here's my take, Brad: It is inevitable that if you're going to do a prequel, you're going to have to cast younger with Fred Krueger. Why not pull Robert Englund into the casting process and have him help select his successor? My vision of a compelling new Nightmare would be to start with the rape of Amanda Krueger...but not graphic. Do what classic film-masters did and change camera angles and whatnot so we know what's going on but we can't see. All we hear are the screams and the grunts and the hysteria. That could be the opening. Do some clips of Freddy growing up and whatever he went through. Maybe he had a normal family but was just screwed up in the head. Some people are. Lead us to his marriage and his daughter being taken away from him. And then the real Nightmare on Elm Street is the living Freddy Krueger murdering all the Elm Street kids before the parents hunt him down and burn him alive. It's a psychological thriller. It could be a frickin' masterpiece of terror...but not like those crappy Saw movies. And I agree with everyone else...no one-liners. Have it end in one of two ways. The smoke settles and the reborn Krueger arises....or perhaps better yet flash forward however many years to the very first victim that Freddy claims in their dreams and have that end the movie. Hell, you could even have Robert Englund voice Freddy at the end once he's all under the make-up. Oh yeah, if you can't find a new Freddy, I do one heck of a Freddy Krueger. Cast me. I'm just saying. Whatever direction you go in, good luck. No doubt I'll see it no matter what.

Фредди 11:14am, January 18, 2009

But why then not to remove "Freddy vs Jason vs Ash"? Or "Freddy vs Jason vs Michael"? What problems?

massdeath 12:18am, January 19, 2009

Remaking this film will be a very tricky endeavor. The original Nightmare is actually an excellent horror film on its own. It's not like the original Friday the 13th which was certainly not a masterpiece to begin with. They are really risking alienating the fanbase by messing this up. So far the results from Platinum Dunes have been mixed: TCM remake was awful (IMHO) and F13 looks like it could be the best F13 film yet. Here are the elements that I think a Nightmare remake needs to be successful: 1) Keep it serious like the original. 2) Freddy is a child molester & murder. He is pure disgusting evil, don't forget that. He should be the ONLY person in the theater laughing when he makes his "jokes". 3) Make good use out of Freddy' boiler room. I loved that imagery from the original. 4) Freddy needs to look disgusting. Perhaps design him as Craven originally wanted to: puss oozing, skull showing, and teeth coming through his face (sort of like Jason from Part 7 but with all the frills that modern effects can provide). 5) Creative kills are always a plus in a film like this. 6) Keep it psychological. One of the best elements of the original was how Freddy sought out each character's weakness and exploited it before murdering them. 7) Create human characters worth caring about. For some reason this seems to be the hardest part of a slasher film. The whole Springwood Slasher backstory should help with that. If you CARE about the characters then their deaths will actually FRIGHTEN you instead of just entertaining you. 8) Replace Robert Englund. Sorry hardcore fanboys, but this is a new direction and it needs newer, younger blood.

disanti 3:11am, January 19, 2009

It's a long process russian dude who's name I cannot read. When FvJ was made, both Jason and Freddy were owned by new line cinemas. Since then, New Line and paramount were bought out by Warner brothers. That helped with Friday getting remade because Paramount still had a lot of the rights to the Friday franchise. Now with Ash and Myers, they are also owned by other companies. FvJ never happened for a long time because Paramount and New Line couldn't get together on a deal. It took New Line buying out the Friday Franchise for it to happen. So in the case with Ash and Myers, it would take drastic decisions by those who own the rights of those movies to share with other studios. Sam Raimi has been dragging his feet with the Evil Dead for years, so it's not a surprise he never gave the go ahead for Ash to appear. Myers is in his own hell being remade by Rob Zombie so that's where those projects are at. I hope you understand that it's a very complicated process to get a movie made sometimes. Just be thankful they finally made FvJ after a decade+ of speculation. Maybe one day we'll see something else, but I doubt it.

Фредди 5:20am, January 19, 2009

I am not a fan of PG-13 horror films, nor of all the remakes. But I would be happier if you would use your influence and money to foster new talent: new writers with new stories, new actors, directors, and producers. I think it is okay to "stand on the shoulers of giants" but you guys are not just standing on them, you're breaking them. I feel that you just churn out the same old formulaic things over and over again. Which means you are acting out of fear. Where is the risk-taking? Where is the artistry? I feel that remakes that rated PG-13 are about ONE THING ONLY: $$$ Sad, guys. C'mon, what would all your old USC professors think? As far as the new Elm Street is concerned, I hope you plan on bringing Heather Langenkamp into the mix. She should be offered the role of Nancy's mother, at the very least. If she has no part of it, you will not see me or any of my friends at the theater. Thanks and good luck.

There are really so many good choices to play the part of freddy if u look at some actors. Just i would try to have them find a way to relate to the charicter (like heath ledger did for the joker). Make sure he can walk an talk like a really creppy pycho. I think thats the key to play a charicter like him. It’s more about body lannguage. I also think it is a good idea to make freddy satanistic in the film. Please do not make this film pg-13. I think u should go all out with this movie as far as being explict and graphic. But make it gory and creepy at the same time. This film really need to have a creepy vibe. I think that is what the movie attenton. Make sure there is a good solid script(a good story). Where u get to know the charicters. Also i don’t think u would not hurt no ones feeling if this would up be a 2, 2 1/2 film. Just as long as u can keep everybody on there feet during that time it will do good. You had the right idea with texas chainsaw masscre, i haven’t seen friday the 13th yet but it looks real good. Just go in that direction but turn it up more and it should be a real good horror flick.

Can't wait for the Friday the 13th remake! :-) As far as the Nightmare on Elm Street remake goes I definitely don't want to see a lot of CGI!

chuckie_m 1:10pm, January 22, 2009

I was skeptical of a PG-13 rating on The Unborn but I saw it yesterday anyway. I really enjoyed this movie. The special effects made this movie. I am VERY excited about Friday the 13th - I hope it's scary and the actors don't cheese it up! With that being said - I am even more excited about Nightmare on Elm Street - but I am worried that the actors that will be chosen will be a bunch of no-namers who make it less than fans expect. I hope the main characters are at least some big names that can act. Pleeeease include Nancy - this will make so many fans happy! And pleeeeease keep the CGI to a minimum. Anyone can make something on a computer - it's far more appealing when horror creatures/persona are created by hand and makup effects! Other than that - keep making bloody disgusting movies.......I LOVE THEM!!!!

There is one more element that I think should be used and that is the use of the striped sweater with no green stripes on the sleeves. Bring back the original sweater style again. In the original Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy's sweater did not have the green stripes on the sleeves and that would be an awesome detail to bring back. -Joseph "Sephit" Martinez

dwiseman7261 6:14pm, January 26, 2009

I am very excited to see "A Nightmare On Elm Street" be re-made mostly because it simply deserves to be. The first film had a very small budget and a larger budget will do the film justice. Having said that, I know that Robert Englund has to play Freddy. He IS the only Freddy; putting someone else in the role is a new idea, but it will be much more successful with Robert attached. Also, I think it would be fitting if Heather Langenkamp (the original Nancy) played Nancy's mother in the remake. She gave the first movie such strength and I do believe that it would be fun to have her involved in some capacity. In other words, it would be amazing to have a dark remake that did not echo any of the 'Nightmare' sequels. The door on Nancy's house should be blue and not red as it was painted in the sequels. I think it would be beneficial to get good and generally well-known actors for the part as "A Nightmare On Elm Street" was really considered to be the scariest of all of the horror films that came out in the 1980's. Overall, fans just want to see a scary film that captures the spirit of the original. We don't want Freddy to be funny and the audience does not need Freddy to be in their face; keep Freddy as a "shadowy-figure." Perhaps it is best to hire Jacques Haitkin who was the original cinematographer so that you can keep dark-tones to the film so that the picture is not contaminated with light.

Okay, I have a LOT to get off of me chest with you greedy, money-hungry bastards. I made this account specifically for the occasion. First off, haven't you prematurely ended enough Horror franchises TCM, F13, and now A Nightmare On Elm Street? Not only this, but Robert Englund will not be replaying Freddy!!? If you remake ANOES, that is one thing, but an actor other than Robert Englund playing Freddy Krueger!!? That is downright blasphemous!!! There is no need for the original Nightmare to be remade, it has aged elegantly, and holds up even to today's standards. (Which actually are quite low, due to talentless hacks like you.) However, since for whatever reason you feel the urge to do so, ($$$) just give the fans Robert Englund as Freddy. If not as Freddy, give him at least ten minutes of screen time in a cameo or whatever. If not, then I swear to God that I will start the greatest cinematic boycott ever known against your film. Me and my friends will do whatever we can in our power to prevent your films from making money, boycotts, posting spoilers in the anticipation Threads on theinternet, anything that can possibly take that extra 8 bucks away from you. So please, for the love of the fans, (And for your love of money.) let Robert Englund play Freddy. If not, then I hope that anybody and everybody and their entire families at platinum deuche (OOPS! That's not a Typo!!) rot in Hell you talentless, greedy, selfish, money-hungry low-life hacks.

First off, don't listen to those people who say we need England. It's a reboot so new blood is required. There's plenty of actors who could do the role justice - Crispin Glover, Ben Forster, etc... Just make sure the guy is lanky and skinny because that makes him that much more effective as a shadowy killer. Secondly, if it is to be dark and scary which is what you guys claim it should be, then look at the original Nightmare film and Wes Craven's New Nightmare renditions of Freddy. Keen him in the shadows, minimise the jokes, keep his dialogue to a minimum. As for appearance, I'd go back to the makeup of the original. Keep it nasty and crisp. For cinematography, you guys already do great work there with the TCSM and Friday remakes but make sure there's a little bit of "Where's Freddy hiding" scenario's. Could he be lurked behind a trashcan down a dimly lit street? or in a backyard? That kind of thing. Atmosphere is highly important for an effective Nightmare film. Story wise, keep it psychological. Having Freddy just enter the dreams of random teenagers won't warrant a sequel so think about the story carefully. Make sure you cast someone who will be a strong protagonist, someone the audience can relate to, someone who has fight in them yet sincere. Perhaps get a named actor for the protagonist (remember Jessica Biel in the TCSM remake?). Story should be the most important focus, everything else comes second. Finally, the reboot definitely requires an R rating however since the guy has razors for fingers after all and we know that's how he typically dispatches his victims. A PG-13 Nightmare movie will cause the entire Nightmare fanbase (new and old) to go nuts. Freddy is supposed to be vicious so let's see it! Good luck guys! I know you'll do a good job!

sarahw1984 5:20am, February 3, 2009

If the franchise must be rebooted then I'd rather see a prequel. There's such a rich history developed in the NOES franchise as a whole and it's never really given the onscreen treatment it deserves. I think a prequel detailing events from the point were his mother is raped until the point where the Elm Street parents kill him would be good. Maybe finishing on Tina's first nightmare from the original NOES? As for actors... How about Heather Langenkamp playing a younger version of her mother from the original?

englundfan 8:38am, February 3, 2009

I was disgusted when I heard a re-make of the classic NOES was being made. As a huge fan of the original and enchanting Robert Englund, I'm not too fussed on a modern NOES, and I can't see myself endorsing it or encouraging it in the UK. The continuing success of the NOES series, which developed into the TV series, New nightmare, Freddy V Jason etc etc, was based on Englunds ability to create a character that we remember through each of the NOES films. I really can't understand the reasoning behind bringing a new actor onto a re-make of this classic film. Freddy's mannerisms, his quips, chronically bad jokes, metaphors and personality, are all based on Robert Englund (as you would realize, if you're a fan of his other work). I find re-imagining as virtually impossible. As I read through the comments, I understand a number of people are keen for a prequel to NOES, however I think this could be a bad idea, as it defeats the purpose of the title. plus in the latter part of the collection, we've strayed into his past- particularly in Freddys dead. I think this is all we need, we can leave the rest to the imagination. I'd love to see the sheer thrill and eeriness that the original brought, unlike todays modern lacklustre remakes.

irish dude 3:24am, February 4, 2009

To the producers of the Nightmare remake. There is no reason why yous cannot use Robert!! Freddy vs Jason was made a few years back and he did that great, most of all the physical aspects of the film were done by a stunt freddy anyway. There isn't any excuse for it, i was hoping that after the michael, leatherface and jason remakes that nobody would get there hands on freddy. Its sad that hollywood is that shitty now, no creative ideas at all, I hope the film tanks, just for the fact that they didn't even ask robert to reprise the role. Plus the last thing we need is a sequel to a remake, oh yeah wait, rob zombies already doin that!

static75 1:03pm, February 4, 2009

I'm a little concerned about the new NOES film as most of these recent remakes have been standard dull hollywood fayre featuring casts of glossy young forgettable starlets. Less is more: characters who look like real people, a mostly unseen killer who lurks in the background... it would be great to have Freddy return to the unsettling monster he originally was as opposed to the crappy wisecracking collectible figurine he became. This would be a great opportunity to make a really good tense thriller, an earthy mix of a prequel and the first film. I always think it's a bit naff to give characters new names - we need a Nancy Thompson - she's an iconic part of the story. A cameo or two from previous cast would be nice but not essential. Would be great to see a new actor as Freddy, someone who perhaps has a similar look to Englund - Sean Penn for the sake of argument.

gr8ride08 1:24pm, February 4, 2009

Dear Platinum Dunes, How much creditibility is there in Robert De Niro wanting to play the part of Freddy Krueger and it would be nice if u would put the information on what A-List actors want to play the role of Freddy Krueger so hardcore fans can help pick the best choice

I am a LONG LONG TIME Freddy fan. Definitely due a small back story, make Freddy darker, keep some humor though. And Most Importantly......KEEP Robert Englund. He is Freddy Krueger Period!

I have to disagree with so many people on this whole mess about people saying they wont support a new Freddy and that Robert Englund is the only way that they will support it . Now dont get me wrong , I loved Englunds portrayals of Freddy so much so that I have Freddy tattooed on my arm. But lets be honest here. Freddy became more of a cartoon character than a slasher icon , and while it was fun, it ruined the very face of horror itself. Well, lets go back to the roots and get Freddy scary again. A one liner here and there is great but let him speak through actions and less words, please. Can you imagine how much cool shit they could do with new technology as compared to the original. Go nuts with it . Just keep it scary and dont change the story too much . We dont need a whole prequel, because you already know the backstory of what happened and why he is called the springwood slasher , but maybe get a little more psychological with it and dwell on what caused Freddy to kill all those kids . Not like in Freddys Dead , but lets just throw one idea out here (wink wink) Say Freddy was in Vietnam or something and was forced to kill women , children and anything that moved. Maybe it drove him nuts and he became the crazy slasher icon we all know and love today . PLEASE DONT RUIN FREDDY.

glassman99 5:26pm, February 9, 2009

I do howerver agree with those above me here on this page and I must say , Robert Knepper would make an awesome new Freddy . He is just a creepy guy and yet has that dark sense of humor . He is built much like Freddy , he would just be a great choice all around for a new Freddy. I almost feel as though I have to explain further why I feel we nee a new Freddy and not Englund . If you watch many of the extras on the Nightmare dvds it would seem as if Robert supported taking Freddy down the cartoon path , and then it just kept getting farther and farther away from what Freddy needs to be and what originally put Freddy on top. The older Robert got the less scary Freddy got. well introducing a fresh new portrayal of Freddy could open up new doors and hopefully give us many more Nightmares . I for one want Freddy to have many , many more victims and chapters , but without losing sight of what makes him so interesting and scary .

Any information on where the casting for the film is taking place? I'm a big fan of the original "Nightmare..." and I'm also an actor. If anyone has more info (possibly the casting director's name) please send me a message back. I need to have my agent hook something up pronto! Thanks, Kyle Rich

Craig_666 7:15pm, February 14, 2009

Ignore my comments somewhere above. I've just watched your remake of Friday the 13th. All I can say is: PLEASE, PLEASE LEAVE OUR BELOVED CLASSICS ALONE!! I GAVE YOU ANOTHER CHANCE WITH FRIDAY THE 13TH AND YOU JUST CAN'T DO HORROR. PLEASE LEAVE ELM STREET WELL ALONE, YOU'LL FUCK IT UP. MICHAEL BAY SHOULD STICK WITH ACTION FILMS. LEAVE HORROR ALONE UNTIL YOU CAN WORK OUT HOW TO CREATE SUSPENSE. COME UP SOMETHING NEW OR JUST DON'T BOTHER. ELM STREET DOESN'T NEED TO BE TARNISHED WITH YOUR BRUSH. SO LEAVE IT ALONE.

RLSteve 2:51am, February 15, 2009

I think the best way to make an effective remake would be... Combine elements of the original Nightmare On Elm Street with A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Dream Warriors was the best of the sequels and was a good movie in itself. With this remake of Nightmare On Elm Street, you have an opportunity to make more than just a slasher film. You can make this a fantasy/action film as well. Put in a character like Kristen Parker who has the ability to call people into her dreams. It's important that you have the teenagers eventually be able to share the dreams. Have an army of teenagers with their own unique dream powers who battle Freddy together, like in Dream Warriors. Don't follow the typical slasher formula where there is just one surviving female at the end. Keep a group of survivors, perhaps three or four. Nancy, Kristen, Kincaid and Joey were characters you cared about. Make this a character driven movie (The Scream franchise was very character driven, which is why it was so popular). Keep the audience guessing who is going to survive and who is going to die. Make sure you have some creative nightmares, but just don't have every person die when a nightmare happens. This isn't Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees who you are running away from. This is Freddy Krueger in an actual dream world. Anything goes!

Prydonian 3:35am, February 16, 2009

I'm an old-school mega-fan of both the Nightmare series and the Friday series. The idea of remaking Nightmare rather than simply carrying the series on has been worrying me for some time, and has always struck me as a mistaken approach. Still, that's the way things need to be in Hollywood right now to get these films made, so I'm coming at it with an open mind. Having just seen the Friday the 13th remake, I can say I've finally seen the first horror remake that works... that really *feels* like the original, and that give me some faith and some optimism. The revelation that fan input is being seriously considered on the Nightmare reboot also gives me some hope! Perhaps this can really work out... Of course, having read the last blog post about Friday, I still have some reservations. I have a sneaking suspicion that the DVD cut of the film is going to be the one that I was afraid to see in theaters. One with Jason as a plain ol' serial killer, sharpening his machete, setting traps, being far too intelligent, running a lot, and being, well, Leatherface. Then again, I'm prone to worry. Anyway! As to Nightmare, I'd like to offer a couple of thoughts. First, why not go easy on the sex? I know the common wisdom is that slasher films require sex, but that's not really true. With the new Friday, I was frankly sick of breasts after about twenty minutes. I know the old saw about the Friday series centering around "drugs and pre-marital sex," so maybe that was the goal, but still... it felt like the producers were pandering to the audience. And to read that the DVD cut will have MORE sex and violence... surely that's a little over the top? At any rate, the Nightmare series has never had a huge sexual component... Freddy toys with people's libidos occasionally, but he himself for instance couldn't be less interested. He just likes to kill people. My point is that an enormous focus on topless girls and teenager sex detracts from the storytelling... it's time that could be spent on character and on suspense, and while it may thrill the teenyboppers, those of us in the audience that adults tend to be more interested in the story. Second, the now-ubiquitous "shaky cam." The documentary-style filming, wherein every shot is a claustrophobic closeup and every scene in which there's action sees the camera shaking like handheld can be very effective at creating a kind of tension... but for a film like Nightmare, it wouldn't necessarily work. Nightmare is more about plot and visuals than being chased, and for a film like that, maybe we could pull back a little. Third, and perhaps most importantly, don't be afraid of the supernatural. I know the trend of late has been to avoid that, but this is a very different franchise than the others. I was thrilled beyond belief that the potential for Jason to be a supernatural entity was left in the Friday remake - had it been entirely dismissed, I would have felt completely uninvolved in the film, as I don't find anything compelling about a big guy who just likes to hurt people. With Freddy, of course, the whole premise requires the presence of the supernatural, and I'm sure the filmmakers are very much on top of it. I just wanted to suggest taking it all the way... never shying away from it. The dream world can be utterly mutable, everything is possible... the iconic Nightmare set pieces, like Freddy's home (the decrepit funhouse version of Nancy's house), the marble columns and chessboard floor, Freddy's fondness for twisting and bringing everyday objects to life and for blending his own body with things, the cavernous spaces - it can all be taken to a new level with today's effects - but only if the filmmakers feel like they're allowed to go that far. So forget the recent trends; if ever an instinct says "is this too supernatural?" just ignore it and take the scene as far as you can. Finally, how about making the teenage victims likable? :) One thing that's made films like this problematic over the years is that, as the villains became the focus, the victims became less likable, which leaves the audience with no real heroes. Freddy may be lovable with that black sense of humor he has, but he's still supposed to be evil. For that to work, the audience has to actually want the kids to live... today, in films of this kind, we're usually presented with a pack of slick, self-involved, super-hot kids with an enormous sense of entitlement. A few like-minded teenagers may be able to relate, but by and large these kids come across as more offensive than the villains. How about a group of kids that we DON'T hate? In the original Nightmare, for instance, only one of the kids was anything less than a good guy, and he was just a hard-luck case. So it worked, we cared about them. A return to that dynamic... with most of the kids being likable instead of just one Hero and one Heroine... would be a really welcome change, and create a lot more tension in the film. Wow... okay! That's my two cents! Thanks for listening, anybody! Oh, one more thing... don't be afraid of Freddy's sense of humor once in a while! It makes the character! He loves what he does. And it creates an interesting dichotomy in the audience's mind: they want to hate him, but he's clearly having so much fun... it endears the character to the viewer, even while they're being repulsed by him. It makes the whole story experience a lot more nuanced. Oh, and keep the basics... glove, sweater, hat... don't reinvent the wheel! For goodness's sake, don't put him in coveralls... Okay, I'm done. :)

Please, Please, Please do this Elm Street reboot properly!! Of all the reboots that you have done, THIS reboot is going to by far be the toughest to pull of and pull off properly. As you can tell by all of the comments, this Nightmare is going to be scrutinized more than any other reboot that has been done to date. Whoever plays Freddy MUST GET IT RIGHT!! This movie MUST be scary and everything from the atmosphere of the movie and plot to the atmosphere created by the movie soundtrack MUST be done properly. They have a chance to really create something special here and breathe new life into arguably the most iconic horror villain ever created but IT MUST BE DONE RIGHT!!! By the way, stay away from PG-13 with this one and make it Rated "R"(This ones gonna need an "R" rating if you are gonna do it right)!! I truly believe that the quality of the Nightmare remake is going to be the benchmark of what Platinum Dunes is capable of and remembered for. I wish Platinum Dunes luck with this remake and look forward to seeing what they are able to come up with...

First of all, I deeply appreciate the consideration of the fans opinions upon this whole "Elm Street" business. I am a huge fan of the "Elm Street" series, more so towards the first two films. In those first two films, Freddy was scary... really scary. However, I'm afraid by the later films he became more or less a bad stand up comedian fifty percent of the time. So a retake on the first film is, in my opinion, a better choice. As far as a prequel goes... why? People like Freddy the character, not Freddy the human before he made the deal, or Freddy the teenager abused by his father, played by Alice Cooper, and surely not Freddy the abused child who lashed out in school and society. We get it. We want Freddy!!! To whom plays him, I see it many ways. Robert Englund was who Freddy was based upon as far as demeanor and such. A new actor, not A list like Robert De Niro or Sean Penn, but someone we believe is Freddy... not just Brad Pitt in another film where he pretty much plays himself. Someone we can't recognize beyond Krueger. And this needs to be "R" rated. It may seem untrue to the nature of these films... seems how the firts NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET USED OVER 500 GALLONS OF FAKE BLOOD!!! The people who adored and followed and worshipped these films also love blood clearly. Seeing the BLOODY DRAG MARKS UP THE WALL AND ACROSS THE CEILING WERE ICONIC MOMENTS OF TERROR NO ONE FORGOT. THE FOUNTAIN OF BLOOD FROM WHEN JOHNNY DEPP WAS SPIT UP ONTO THE CEILING, FANTASTIC!!! BLOOD WAS A KEY ELEMENT TO THIS MOVIE. CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING A SCARY PG 13 MOVIE... NOW MAKE A HORRIFYING R RATED FILM!!!! I bet you all remember the blood. And Freddy needs to savor the kill. None of this modern ultra fast paced slaying as the new take of "Friday the 13th". There needs to be torment, suspense, and a sincere feeling of sympathy for each person killed in these films, rather than a mere opportunity to create some new gimmicky, modern wave fashion of finishing off the victims. These remakes are getting a little redundant... so take this one to the top and over, of course in regards to everything previously stated. If I can think of anything else, I'll be sure to post it!!! Thanks!!!

Here is what I want to see in a Freddy film. I'd like to see Freddy taken seriously, towards the later sequels Freddy became a joke. Constantly making jokes, and don't get me wrong, I like Freddy to be funny, but to a certain point. In the later sequels, it seemed like Freddy was trying to be funny more than he was trying to be scary. That's all I can think of, right now. DON'T OVERUSE BLOOD! Please.

I THINK BILL MOSELELY WOULD BE GREAT FOR THE PART OF FREDDY!!!!

ssgiceman 7:12am, March 30, 2009

Let me start by saying that I loved the Nightmare films and if you can't do them justice, walk away now. Freddy did not give us the jump out and yell BOOO scares of todays Horror films. I actually avoided walking down dark alleyways after seeing the first film. We need to return to a real villian, one that stays with you after the credits roll. I feel that a really good make up man is needed to make Robert Englund look young because He IS Freddy. If he refuses then you need to find a look alike, Or a make up job that creates another Englund That is Freddies face any other look will not work for the die hard fans. I have read all the books and one author insisted on a 5 razor claw. Please do not make that error. You have been given a winning receipe don't mess it up. I f Englund will not take the role then his moves and everything he does needs to be studied and replicated. I wish I were an actor I have memorized ever move , tone inflection, every breath the character took I know about. I look for errors in movies and All Horror films contradict themselves but Nightmare did it far less then others. This made the film a Horror Classic and classics are popular for those wanting to make a quick buck at the box office. I have read the suggestions by many fanss and there are some good ideas. Flashbacks of the Trial mabey Freddys death but don't dwell on it. The theme music rocks don't change it,the ending could use a redo. I have an idea for that but my typing blows and it would take forever. If you are looking for a twist on the ending just say so, I'll get a typist. SO PLEASE don't just kill off a few teenagers for a buck. Study your character, if Robert won't or can't do it consult with him. Don't forget the vision of Wes Craven. Give us a Horror classic not a sorry ass remake ( I don't bring up any titels because I am not sure exactly what you have done and don't want to offend any one) You have one of the truly scary characters ever on film in your hands. SCARE US Thank You

I can't believe anyone here feels that Platinum Dunes will do 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' justice. A classic, stand-alone film that has stood the test of time. Still terrifies ppl now. This company makes awful horror movies, they've ruined nearly every franchise with their awful attempts. They are in it for the money. Plain and simple - like their films.

And the only way for Platinum to do THEIR version of Nightmare is to keep it all their own material. USE NOTHING FROM THE ORIGINAL MOVIE! You can't top it - don't try. Don't use homages, don't use names, don't use cameo's. Please, if you insist on tainting a franchise, don't drag the original material in with yours and blend it into bland.

I am hoping that Brad will see this post. On seeing the trailer for The Unborn, my blood ran cold and I NEED to speak to the writer as a matter of extreme importance. You see I have a 15 year old chimera daughter, her twin was a boy, she has sectoral heterochromia of the left eye (brown section in blue eyes) and recently she has been in a mental health unit due to visual auditory and sensory hallucinations. As I saw the trailer, it felt really creepy like someone has been watching us. I have not seen the film (sorry) and no doubt the similarities within the actual film will differ BUT still I need to know how the writer came to write this story. I have an incredible TRUE story relating to all this and there will be a massive court case before long. It all sounds fantastic I know, but please hear me that this is genuine and I am driven to find out what led to the writing of the film.
