Born Theodore Robert Cowell, Ted Bundy was a handsome, charming all-American guy who shocked friends, family and the nation when he was convicted of the killings of numerous young women in Washington, Utah, Colorado and four other states between 1974 and 1978. Having twice escaped from police custody, he was finally apprehended in February 1978 and executed in Florida on January 24, 1989. After more than a decade of vigorous denials, he eventually confessed to over 30 murders, although the actual total of victims remains unknown. Estimates range from 29 to over 100.
