Originally expected to receive a Blu-ray release last year, we've received last-minute confirmation from the indie distributor that they will at last release 'Akira' in a first-ever high-def edition on February 24. Specs will see a BD-50 dual-layer presentation with a new 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer (1.85:1) and Japanese audio in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround, PCM 2.0 Stereo, and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. An English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround dub is also provided. Unlike the previous special edition DVD release, extras are comparatively sparse, with only a storyboard collection and five theatrical trailers.
