John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Big Fish) will write the film version of the subversive comic book series for director Sam Mendes, reports Entertainment Weekly. Preacher is based on the works by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, which center on a foulmouthed cleric who is imbued with the word of God and battles an all-powerful religious society.
