'Prom Night' Remake Scores Big, Puts Pressure on R-rating

PG-13 horror rules the land and it hurts. I have no problem with a PG-13 film being made, or being successful for that matter, but what bothers me is that the studio execs gets the idea in their head that PG-13 horror is the ONLY way to go and trim R-rated genre pics into bland, useless films just to score an extra buck. Back in the '90s all of the popular teen films like SCREAM and URBAN LEGEND were all R-rated, so why the sudden change? Anyways, this weekend Sony Screen Gems' PG-13 horror film Prom Night (which really didn't need to be R) took the top spot in the box office pulling in an estimated $22.7 million. While I am happy to see a genre film succeed, I dread the reaction across the board to it's success and have to ask the question, what R-rated horror film will be the first to be cut just to get a few more teens into the theater?
