Last night Bloody-Disgusting hit up the red carpet premiere of Sony Screen Gems’ Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, where we chatted with Underworld creator and producer Len Wiseman about his forthcoming adaptation of the popular video game Gears Of War. Beyond the break you can read all about his big plans for the trilogy.

After chatting a bit about where the Underworld franchise will be going, Wisemen revealed to Bloody-Disgusting that he’s directing an adaptation to GEARS OF WAR, which is he co-writing with Chris Morgan (Wanted, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious).

I’m writing Gears Of War with Chris Morgan, who wrote Wanted,” he tells BD before explaining that he wasn’t much of a gamer until he saw GOW in his movie Live Free Or Die Hard.

I suck at video games, it just takes me too long and I can’t get the coordination of ‘em. When I was on [Live Free Or] Die Hard, I had to choose some video game for the background in a scene with Kevin Smith. I was shown about a dozen games and told to ‘Choose one to be in the background’ and I said ‘this one looks really, really cool whatever it is,’ and it was Gears Of War. I just really connected with it; the design of it the world, the whole thing. So I actually brought an Xbox 360 to start researching what it was.

For the first time ever, Wiseman talked about his plans for adapting the franchise.

It’s going to be much more [on the] science fiction side of it than the creature side of it. I’ve always been much more of a sci-fi action fan than a horror fan,” he reveals also explaining that he wants the scope of the film to be told over the course of three films! “The hope is that were wanting to do a three movies and really cover the bases on everything. Basically a harder edged Lord Of The Rings.

While Wiseman doesn’t say the films will be in 3-D, he does admit that he’s interested in the new technology. “Yeah, I think about [3D technology] quite a bit,” he continues, “the more and more I get involved with these movies and the bigger they are the more you rely on CG effects to help you out. And you can do it properly; I’ve been a big fan of practical work and still am, it’s finding a way to incorporate them together.

In the Gears Of War video games you take on the role of Marcus Fenix a disgraced war hero, who is taking on the Locus Hordes along side his longtime friend Dom Santiago, who frees Marcus from a penitentiary where he was left to die in the beginning of Gears Of War 1. Marcus immediately rejoins the army to take on the Locust. In Gears 2, the Locust are taking down the cities of Sera from deep underground, and it's up to Marcus, Dom, and their friends and partners from Gears 1, Augustus "Cole Train" Cole, and Damon Baird to stop them.

It will prob suck. Just like every other fuckin game base movie. The only game base movie I've seen that was actually like the fuckin game was Silent Hill Best game adpation. And resident evil's I don't even think of them as game adapations. I just think of them as like carry ons. but look at the course of video game movies they made. Max payne, hitman, double dragon, dugeons and dragons. and countless other's that uwe boll made. but if they make this a hard r with some 3-D moments thrown in, and make the locust kick ass we could have ourselfs a cool movie. Time will only tell.

While I agree that past movies based on video games have been sub par, I have faith that Cliff Bleszinski will not let a movie studio turn his baby into a pile of poo. I suggest CliffyB for exec. producer on this one.

Hmm, I agree with chmima, Cliffy should be Exec producer, i would not want anyone turning my game into crap. now i know that some movies based on games are horrible, but they should really really, think this out first, what would be better CG? or live action? who is going to play what character? what are they going to do with the make up? i think as long as they think this out and take their time, it should be a hit. Uwe Boll, stay away please lol.

This is fucking stupid. I'm supposed to be excited that GoW is the first video game this guy has ever played? Fuck, all my hope for this film is lost. I agree with everyone else, Cliffy can handle this shit.

11:36pm, January 24, 2009

the creatures are the most important part, and he wants it to be more si-fi! FUCK that

fuckin terrible idea. if it's live action, i'm gonna snap. i'm not an underworld fan, so i don't know how good this guy is but if doesn't know games, WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU DIRECTING THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE! if it's rated pg13 heads will roll man. this uld easily be doomed fro the start. prayin for a suprise here though. same with the halo movie.

Fucking sick of video game adaptations... but even more sick of hard-core gamer nerd 35 year old virgins who cry about their games not being done justice as a movie. Anybody who takes video games seriously really needs to get laid. Shoot, shoot, crouch, jump, reload, strafe left, shoot some more, what the fuck ever. Yeah, please, let's keep these deep, incite-ful, life-changing entertainment experiences pure and unsullied.

GreatGodPanDemic Im a 21 year old hard-core gamer with a long gone virginity, yeh this probz wont do justice and I'll moan but just remember the start of this comment. PLEASE BE GOOD!

DeeJay

More on sci-fi, less on the creatures? Man, the Locust are the whole reason they're fighting. They're the most important element in the story. You can not take focus away from them. You do that, and you're just left with a bunch of guys running around shooting at something you can't quite see and the prospect of that sucks major balls. As much as I love the games, if this is what Wiseman has planned for it, I don't have much hope. Oh, and GreatGodPanDemic, I'm also 21, hard-core gamer, and not a virgin. Maybe you want to re-evaluate your view on this?

"It’s going to be much more [on the] science fiction side of it than the creature side of it. I’ve always been much more of a sci-fi action fan than a horror fan" I fucking hate sci-fi. If I have to watch some sci-fi, give me some blood 'n guts and horror too!

As much as i wanna see this, if that douche wants to ignore the gore in GoW he might as well shove a Lancer up his ass. And who the fuck wants to play Fenix?! Make the movie CG please..

Fracture

If he doesn't actually play the games how the hell is he gonna make a movie that follows the story of the game? I bet it won't like every other hollywood adaptation!
