Bloody-Disgusting received some very crazy intel while out on the town here at the Toronto International Film Festival, it appears that Oscar winning actor Adrien Brody (King Kong) will topline the Guillermo del Toro produced sci-fi-horror film, Splice, which will be helmed by Cube director Vincenzo Natali! The film is about Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named Dren, the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators - only to have that bond turn deadly.
As Adam Mason prepares for the world premiere of his latest feature film, The Devil's Chair (review), he's added a brand new blog and sixth podcast to his Official Blog page here on B-D! Read and hear all about his anticipation for the screening that will take place this upcoming Wednesday at the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival (tix here). Feel free to leave comments or ask questions, which Adam will respond to pretty quickly. With a pocketful of drugs, Nick West (Andrew Howard) takes out his girlfriend Sammy (Polly Brown), for a shag and a good time. When they explore an abandoned asylum, the discovery of a bizarre device - a cross between an electric chair and sadistic fetish machine - transforms drugged-out bliss into agony and despair.
Hot off the heels of the world premiere of his third mother film, The Mother of Tears (review), Dario Argento has kick started the the hype once again. After a double standing ovation the Italian horror maestro revealed to his fans that this might not be the end of our favorite witches as he holds a special place in his heart for this franchise, and can't seem to let it go. He implied that another mother film - fourth mother if you will - is quite a possibility. At a screening the following day, Dario's daughter and star of the film, Asia Argento, joked that maybe we'll see a prequel one day. Could we see the history of the three witches? Let us pray! Watch this spot for exclusive video interviews with the Argento's in the following weeks.
If you head on over to the official blog for Midnight Madness, you can read all about Jake West's (Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes, Evil Aliens, Razor Blade Smile) latest project, Doghouse. "I’m currently in early pre-production on my next flick, which I hope will be a strong candidate for the Midnight Madness crowd. It’s called Doghouse and been written by cult comic book artist Dan Schaffer (“Dogwitch”, “The Scribbler”). I can’t wait." he tells the festival. We've been supplied with your first look at new art for George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead, which will have it's world premiere tonight at the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival. Watch for a review as soon as possible. With a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series, the film will follow a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches. ...Read More
Today I've added my positive review of the Guillermo del Toro produced Spanish horror film, The Orphanage, which played at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. As much as I loved the movie, I think it's safe to say I'm the first person not flipping over it, "Although it might sound as if I’m not recommending the film, I actually do. I think THE ORPHANAGE is a wonderful little film that most people will dig. My only gripe with the movie is that I wanted it to be a horror film and not pretend to be one." Click the title for the review and check out Juan Antonio Bayona's film in theaters December 28. Click here for all TIFF reviews.
The Toronto International Film Festival has officially kicked off and B-D is on site getting your first looks at all the latest horror films. As part of Midnight Madness, Dario Argento celebrated his birthday in style with the world premiere of his highly-anticipated third mother film, The Mother of Tears, which Mike Pereira writes, "Sure, it’s no “Suspiria” and frankly, nothing ever will be. If you can get over that fact, you will find yourself entertained by Argento’s delightfully deranged and energetic epic. It’s got brutal violence! Nudity! Lesbian sexuality! Lots of lesbians! Yes, it’s politically-incorrect. What more do you want in an Argento movie?!" Click the title for the review and watch our official TIFF MOVIES/REVIEWS page for new reviews throughout the weekend.
