New Batch of Beautiful Stills From 'Vinyan'
Posted: July 14, 2008 @ 4:55am

This weekend we were provided with a bunch of new images from Fabrice du Welz's Vinyan, which we've been covering pretty heavy as of late. Still not having accepted the loss of their son in a tsunami disaster, Janet and Paul Behlmer are back in Bangkok. Hanging onto the fact that his body has never been discovered, Janet desperately clings to the idea that pirates might have kidnapped their kid in the confusion that followed the catastrophe. Looking for someone to guide them in the Thai underworld, they bribe their way to a mysterious Mr. Gao, who takes them to Ranong, where a mercenary supplies them with a boat and crew to explore the pirate-infested shores of Burma. Slowly, they will lose themselves into a strange child-infested jungle and to their inner demons. Read on for the stills. ...Read More

Film Review: French Horror Film 'Martyrs' Lives Up to the Hype
Posted: June 28, 2008 @ 1:35am

Today we posted one of the first ever reviews of Dimension Films' Martyrs, this years French horror film everyone will soon be talking about - yes, it lives up to the hype. "MARTYRS is this year's INSIDE, both films are legendary in their own right... By the end of the film MARTYRS becomes immensely uncomfortable, and making it through the final 30 minutes is a tough task. The only negative thing about Laugier's film is that once you see it, you'll never be able to see it for the first time ever again..." Click the title for the full review and loads of stills.

Hot out of this year's Cannes film market the hype for the French horror film Martyrs continues. Word has it that this film is as brutal as INSIDE, only not as fun. Early Review: First EVER Look at 'Eden Log'!!
Posted: January 30, 2008 @ 3:53pm

One of the most talked about foreign horror films in the past year was Franck Vestiel’s Eden Log (trailer), which was acquired by Magnolia Pictures for release sometime this year. I was lucky enough to be one of the first ever people to see an actual print of the film – only the subtitles weren’t in tact yet. Unfortunately I can’t write an official review for the film without having known what was said, but I can give you my immediate reaction, which can be found by reading on! Check it out! ...Read More

TIFF Review: Uwe Boll Produced (!) 'They Wait' Terribly Cliche
Posted: September 17, 2007 @ 7:16pm

One of the most mind-numbing films of this past week's Toronto International Film Festival was Ernie Barbarash's They Wait, which was executive produced by the legendary Dr. Uwe Boll and his Brightlight Pictures company. "Basically what you get in THEY WAIT is nothing more than a poor man’s version of THE GRUDGE... [it's] a dubious film as it pretends to be something it isn’t… or maybe it’s more that it attempts to be something it wishes it could be. If you’re one of those people that live in a routine world, maybe you’re into routine horror? If so, THEY WAIT will be everything you imagine it would be. Bland." Today we added our exclusive one-on-one interview with Stuart Gordon, who had his feature film Stuck (review) play at this year's Toronto International Film Festival as part of Midnight Madness (all reviews). As much as I didn't like the film, we will have an opposite take from Mike Pereira this week. Brandi (Mena Suvari) hits Tom (Stephen Rea) with her car on her way home from a night of partying. With Tom still alive but lodged through her windshield, she promises to go a hospital but then decides to leave Tom to die in her garage as she realizes that her future is inextricably tied to her victim. TIFF Review: French Slasher 'Inside' a Bloodbath!
Posted: September 15, 2007 @ 7:18pm

Today I've added my final review from this year's Toronto International Film Festival, which will play tonight as the closing film of Midnight Madness. French horror took over TIFF this year as both Frontier(s) and Dimension Films' Inside (À l'intérieur) both blew my mind, here's what I had to say about Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's debut film, "INSIDE is terrifying, one of the scariest movies I have ever seen in my life... What you are about to witness is a film that can be compared to a classic painting by Michelangelo or Leonardo DeVinci... that’s painted in blood." He periodically transforms into a giant, about 30 meters tall, and defends Japan by battling similarly sized monsters that turn up and destroy buildings. That's exactly what you're going to get when you see the Japanese mind-trip, Dai-Nipponjin, which premiered last night at the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF REVIEW: Stuart Gordon's 'Stuck' Crashes
Posted: September 13, 2007 @ 7:22pm

The Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival has been by far one of the best festivals I've ever gone to. And although I didn't love every single film playing, there were plenty of fantastic ones. Two films didn't do it for me, one being Stuart Gordon's Stuck (review), which I really wanted to love. Despite my opinion, the fans went crazy at the world premire screening and seemed to really dig the movie, which stars Stephen Rea and Mena Suvari. Read on for a nine-minute look at the intro for the film, which took place this past week in Toronto, Canada. TIFF Review: Thriller 'El Ray de la Montaña' Shoots Blanks
Posted: September 12, 2007 @ 9:22pm

Today we added our review for the Weinstein Company's latest acquisition, El Ray de la Montaña (aka King of the Kill), which really seemed to hit people in polar opposite ways... they either hated it or completely loved it. "In the end you’ll find a film that showcases many talents other than writing – and we all know that a good film begins from a good script... KING OF THE HILL is best watched in your home, on your coach with a Red Bull in hand. It’s a simple no-brainer that tries to be something exquisite and unique, so turn your expectations off and enjoy?" TIFF REVIEW: Takashi Miike's 'Sukiyaki Western Django'
Posted: September 12, 2007 @ 2:34am

Takashi Miike fans are sure to be pleased with his latest effort, the spaghetti western Sukiyaki Western Django (review), which played at the Midnight Madness portion of this year's Toronto International Film Festival tonight. As much as I didn't love the film, it truly does capture the spirit of a classic Miike film with some crazy moments - it's a wild ride, but still missing that special something. Set during "The Genpei Wars" at the end of the 1100s, the Minamoto and Taira gangs face off in a town named Yuda, while a deadly gunman (Ito Hideaki) comes to the aid of the townsfolk. With all of the news breaking this evening we figured now would be a great time to introduce yet another review for George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead (first review), which was just acquired by the Weinstein's for US theatrical release. Read on for the review! The film follows a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches. ...Read More

TIFF: Weinstein's Acquire Spanish 'King of the Hill'
Posted: September 10, 2007 @ 4:45am

Bloody-Disgusting learned exclusively from this year's Toronto International Film Festival that the Weinstein bros. have officially acquired the Spanish horror-thriller King of the Hill (El Rey de la Montaña), which you can read a review for later this week. No details were revealed about the acquisition, but we will say we were less than impressed with the film overall. Quim drives around an isolated rural area through a maze of lanes. When he drives into the woods, he gets lost. Trying to find his direction, he suddenly gets shot from the hill. On his escape from gunshots, he meets Bea, an attractive young woman, who apparently is lost as well. Suspicious of each other, they join forces to run away through the forest, unprotected, cold, hunted…

TIFF Review: French Horror Film 'Frontier(s)' Scores Perfect!
Posted: September 9, 2007 @ 10:49pm

I have a rule here on B-D that I will NOT give a movie a perfect score unless I see it twice. I believe a film should really stand on it's two legs on a second viewing to really deserve that honor, which is why I went through great lengths to see Xavier Gens' Frontier(s) (trailer) two times at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. I am pleased to present you with a review for the film, which is the first to get a perfect score since Park Chan-wook's Oldboy back in March of 2005. "FRONTIER(S) is so freaking hardcore that it’s guaranteed to knock you on our ass so hard that you’ll be bruised by it for life, leaving a little scar deep inside you. This film will not be easily forgotten or shaken off, I guarantee this is one for the ages… you are about to enter a new frontier of horror." Click the title for the review or read all reviews by clicking here. Frontier(s) is the next Haute Tension, guartanteed!
