While the "Midnight Madness' portion of this year's Toronto International Film Festival is loaded with films I'm dying to see (like Romero's Survival of the Dead and Filmax's REC 2), I always have a soft spot for the film's that don't have a name behind it. Such the case with Sean Byrne's Aussie thriller The Loved Ones, which looks like it could be this year's Mandy Lane. We did some digging and was able to get our hands on a few hi-res stills from the film that follows Brent, a 17 year old student, still grieving for his father, who declines an invitation to the school formal from Lola, the quietest girl in school. When Lola and her father kidnap Brent he must fight to survive the macabre celebration they have in store for him. ...Read More
As you may have saw in the previous news post, it was announced that George Romero's next film, which has jokingly been called ...of the Dead, has received the official title of Survival of the Dead. In addition, a stack of new images have been posted on the TIFF website as the film will have its WORLD premiere at the "Midnight Madness" section come September. The latest zombie opus follows a war-weary band of soldiers who are lured to a remote island that promises to be the last paradise on earth, only to discover that even here there is no escape from the appetites of either the living or the dead.

Out of all of the events that happen throughout the year, the one that I look forward to the most is the Toronto International Film Festival, which hosts the epic 10-day event "Midnight Madness." Midnight Madness - the genre fest that has premiered High Tension, Inside, Martyrs and many more - continues to provide an eccentric mix of the weird and the wonderful, the gory and the gruesome. This year, late-night film-goers can expect to have their senses riveted by crazed animation, femme-tastic b-movie mayhem, monsters galore, a possessed cheerleader, exhilarating martial arts and more! The 34th TIFF runs September 10 to 19, 2009 and we've got the entire Midnight Madness line-up. Dig on it inside and prepared to get excited! Get your tickets now before they sell out. ...Read More

One of the most interesting films to play at this year's Toronto International Film Festival was Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel's coming-of-age horror thriller Deadgirl (review), which was written by genre vet Trent Haaga. If you click on over to the film's official website, you can check out the festival trailer for this creepy escapade. The flick is about two teenagers who make a shocking discovery that not only threatens their friendship but also their lives. In a forgotten room of an abandoned asylum, they find a beautiful woman tied to a bed, and soon come to realize she is anything but dead.
While at the Toronto International Film Festival, we caught up with Pontypool director Bruce McDonald who reveals exclusively to Bloody-Disgusting that he has a planned trilogy for the film, which follows a virus spreading through the English-language. "PONTYPOOL, if this first one is perceived well and does a bit of business, then well have the opportinuty to make parts two and three, which are kind of one big story." Today we added our official review of Fabrice du Welz's Vinyan, which was acquired by Sony at this month's Toronto International Film Festival. "While the film is sure to disappoint most horror fans, filmmaking connoisseurs will find solace in a piece of art that is left open to various interpretations. VINYAN is true to Welz’s vision and exactly what he promised to deliver, the only failure would be that it’s not for the majority – but isn’t that what makes a movie special?" Click here for all of our TIFF reviews and interviews.
Inside you'll find a third clip from Fabrice du Welz's Vinyan, which premiered last week at the Toronto International Film Festival (review soon). In the film a couple go on a hunt to find their child, whom they think might have been kidnapped by Thai pirates. The film was inspired by the Spanish horror flick WHO CAN KILL A CHILD? Today we posted our official review of the Spanish cult horror flick Sexykiller, which premiere last night at the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival. "A cult films that gives you blue balls, are you kidding me? Tonight TIFF held the world premiere of Miguel Martí’s SEXYKILLER, which was said to be this year’s over-the-top horror classic. What the audience witnessed instead was a watered down, PG-13 version of a cult film." You can check out another opinion over at Twitch Film or click here for our full TIFF 2008 coverage.
Last was the premiere of the French horror film Martyrs (review) at the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival. After the film ended, most of the sold out crowd stayed for a special Q+A session with Director Pascal Laugier where things took an interesting turn. One of the audience members called out Laugier and dissed his film. What resulted? A good old fashioned butt-whooping. Inside you'll find the full question and answers session (spoilers follow), along with a fun little behind-the-scenes video starring the ladies of MARTYRS, Morjana Alaoui and Mylene Jampanoi. If you want to watch the confrontation, go straight to part 3. ...Read More
After the premiere of his French horror film, Martyrs (review), Director Pascal Laugier took the stage in front of nearly 1,400 screaming fans, who gave the film a standing ovation. During the Q+A session, which took a very interesting turn (more on that soon), Laugier told the audience that the film received an "18A" rating in France - the equivalent to an X-rating here in the States. What's even more shocking is that MARTYRS is the first film to receive the rating without containing a single scene of sex. From what we're told, this is as close to being banned as you can get. Thank God the film has been sold in nearly 40 countries, including here in the States, where Dimension Films will release it on DVD next year. At the screening of Vinyan last week at the Toronto International Film Festival, director Fabrice Du Welz - who made his TIFF debut with CALVAIRE a few years back - told the audience that the thriller was inspired by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador's 1978 Spanish horror film entitled WHO CAN KILL A CHILD? He explained that he originally attempted to gain the remake rights to the film, which is now owned by another studio under the name CHILD'S PLAY (bad name, I know). So, in turn, a lot of the finale of VINYAN comes from his inspiration for the remake he would have made. In the original film, a couple of English tourists arrive on an island where all the children have gone crazy and are murdering the adults. Check out our TIFF news page for everything covered in the past week.
Today we added our official review of Bruce McDonald's Pontypool, which just had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. "While PONTYPOOL is a thought-provoking and suspenseful film, some of the flaws will really take the audience out of the movie." Click the title for the full review of the film that follows a small-town radio station jockey who discovers that recent madness in the local population may be caused by a virus transmitted through speech. Today we added an exclusive one-on-one interview with Jon Hewitt, Director of the "Midnight Madness" selection Acolytes, which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival next week. Last night Deadgirl played the "Midnight Madness" portion of the Toronto International Film Festival where the 1200 seat crowd witnessed the world premiere of Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel's film, which ended in heavy applause. At the Q+A for the coming-of-age horror film, Sarmiento told the audience that he intends to one day release a director's cut of the film, which could feature more "intense" fun. We chatted with the directors earlier that night who told us that over 20 minutes were trimmed from the original cut, which could one day see the light of day via DVD or Blu-ray. They also joked that we might get to see some audition tapes as an extra feature. The film is still looking for distribution.
