Preview: Pilot Season ‘Demonic’
With the ushering in of the new year everyone is trying to come up with the next big miniseries that readers will be talking about all the way into next season. For Top Cow one such title is Robert Kirkman’s ‘Demonic’. I was able to get a sneak peek of the first few pages today, and beyond the break you’ll find a preview to gear you up for the titles’s January 13th release!
“From the creative minds of Image partners Robert Kirkman & Marc Silvestri! The demon is in his head. The demon makes him strong. The demon gets angry when he doesn’t kill. Scott Graves is possessed and he will do anything the demon asks as long as it promises not to make him kill his wife and daughter. Scott stalks in the night as Demonic, a vigilante known for savagely slaughtering the wicked. He asks himself, how long can he continue living this way and what if the demon isn’t real?
Pilot Season: Demonic #1 centers on the story of Scott Graves and his inner demon—only his demon manifests itself in his real life. Providing him strength, the demon is only satiated when Scott kills. In a conflicted Faustian bargain, Scott will continue to kill as long as the demon promises not to make him kill his wife and daughter. Stalking the night as Demonic, a vigilante known for savagely slaughtering the wicked, Scott must asks himself how long he can continue living this way and if the demon is in fact real. Pilot Season: Demonic #1 features a cover by co-creator Silvestri.”
As a comic book fan I cannot stress enough how good Top Cow’s ‘Pilot Season’ titles have been so far. Titles like Alex O’Roarkes’ ‘Tracker’ an Kirkmans’ other brainchild ‘Murderer’ have all been nothing short of fantastic thus far. DEMONIC looks to be another such title for the company and the WALKING DEAD scribe as they continue their new year push. At first glance the title looks a bit generic, if not slightly intriguing with an extremely eye catching cover drawn by Marc Silvestri, but from the few pages I have been shown the title is much more deep than it lets on. If you are a fan of Kirkmans’ ‘Murderer’ or the Dexter television series (which one can grab immediate comparisons from upon a simple review of the synopsis) then you will definitely want to give this little title a look.
Top Cow will be dropping DEMONIC on January 13th 2010

‘Exhuma’ Prequel Spinoff Webtoon ‘Maengjong’ Debuts This Weekend
The supernatural world of Korean folk horror movie Exhuma grows larger with the arrival of prequel spinoff webtoon Maengjong this weekend, Variety reports today.
Naver Webtoon debuts Maengjong on May 30.
The series hails from Haemuri (Olgami) and will trace the high school origins of how shaman duo Hwarim and Bonggil, played by Kim Go-eun and Lee Do-hyun in the 2024 film, came together to face occultish threats.
The story is set to begin when “Hwarim, who has been concealing her identity following a childhood encounter with a snake spirit called Jin, crosses paths with Bonggil at their school.”
Variety notes that Exhuma director Jang Jae-hyun participated in the project’s early concept stage.
“We are presenting ‘Maengjong,’ a new series capturing the appeal of the horror-occult genre, ahead of the full summer season,” said Lee Jeong-geun, Naver Webtoon’s Korea webtoon content leader. “With the high school story of Hwarim and Bonggil, who left a strong impression in the film ‘Exhuma,’ enhanced by Haemuri’s characteristic tense direction, we expect it will be a welcome work for genre fans.”
“It is meaningful that the spin-off story of ‘Exhuma,’ loved by many audiences, expands by meeting the new grammar of webtoon,” said Lee Hyeon-jeong, managing director of the film business division at Showbox, which distributed the film. “We hope it will be a fresh experience for both film fans and webtoon readers.”
Exhuma was a breakout hit in 2024, becoming the first Korean occult film to surpass 10 million ticket buyers and the country’s highest-grossing film of the year. I wrote in my review that “the intricately woven Exhuma delivers one of the year’s biggest surprises in horror so far.”
The bond between Hwarim and Bonggil was one of the film’s highlights, making this prequel webtoon a must for fans.
