There's going to be more horror than you can handle this Halloween as there are more films coming to DVD than any other year before. Inside you'll find a whopping 17 new DVD reviews for films that have - or are about to hit a retailer near you. Visit the Movie Pit for various other updates.
The Stendhal Syndrome: Review by Tex Massacre, "
It’s almost unfair to compare and contrast the differences between Blue Underground’s re-release of STENDHAL with the almost mockingly childish release that Troma gave the film. Visually the comparison is night verses day. The extras cultivated by David Gregory and the crew at Blue Underground are well presented as always. There is no spliced-in footage of Lloyd Kaufman supposedly interviewing Argento to accompany this excellent release. If you love this film, or even if you consider it to be a valent but flawed effort on the part of Argento, there is no argument that the newly minted re-release is a celebratory event for fans of the true Master of Horror."
Blade: House of Chthon: Review by Tex Massacre, "
THE HOUSE OF CHTHON does its job efficiently and correctly—meaning after it’s over it makes you want to watch the rest of the show.. [the film] more than delivers on it’s promise of a slice-and-dice theatrical BLADE experience meted out to the cable television masses."
Scarecrows: Review by Tex Massacre, "
If SCARECROWS has one lasting impact on horror cinema, it will be because, despite it’s lack of budget it stands up as an innovative and original film. Easily the best “Scarecrow” film in a sub-genre that has seen its share of painful entries.."
The Insatiable: Review by Tex Massacre, "
THE INSATIABLE might not hit all the right notes to make for a symphony of gothic romance but it does manage to play a few chords right—ultimately delivering an enjoyable if not wholly successful anti-love story."
Unholy: Review by Tex Massacre, "
UNHOLY is more problematic for its barrage of concepts than for the languid pace at which it delivers them. It may not suffer independent filmmaking’s “unholy trinity” of bad writing, bad directing and bad acting, but in this case two out of three still equals “bad”"
Snake Woman's Curse: Review by Tex Massacre, "
Is SNAKE WOMAN’S CURSE going to change your life? The easy answer is, no. Is it going to help you appreciate something as simple as JU-ON or RINGU? Perhaps. Will it entertain you for 85-minutes? If you give the film the time and the benefit of the doubt then I believe that answer is a resounding yes."
Horrors of Malformed Men: Review by Tex Massacre, "
It seems a shame that the great director—who shot more that 80 films in his long and varied career—never lived to see the cult of his greatest film come to our shores. Still, it finally has, and those of you who proclaim yourselves devotees of alternative cinema to the highest degree of eccentricity will have a field day with this long overdue release.."
Borderline Cult: Review by Tex Massacre, "
It would go against everything I believe in on a personal level to recommend this film to anyone with any semblance of taste. However, if you’ve seen something/anything, by this unstoppable force of nature and you do happen upon BORDERLINE CULT at a video store, or accidentally take it home because the case has been slyly slipped behind the cover box some innocuous fare like NORBIT, then at least you can rest assured, it’s far from the worst he’s capable of. That film, if you’re keeping score is…GREEN RIVER KILLER (Got it!!!?)"
The Dead One: Review by Tex Massacre, "
Based on the underground comic El Muerto by Javier Hernandez, THE DEAD ONE is trying very hard not to be a cross between THE CROW and GHOST RIDER. Sometimes it succeeds, but more often than not it fails."
Savage Harvest: Review by Tex Massacre, "
Atmospheric and creepy, with a heady backstory, solid effects work and a genuine horror fans love for the genre, SAVAGE HARVEST might not be the “be all, end all” of DIY filmmaking, but it has stood the test of time admirably."
Savage Harvest 2: Review by Tex Massacre, "
If you’ve never seen the original, SAVAGE HARVEST 2 may seem at times tedious and wordy, but I promise you it will pay off later by sending you head first down a river of crimson in the epic finale. What more could you ask for?"
Exorcism: Review by Tex Massacre, "
Overall, the film is no worse than LISA AND THE DEVIL or any number of other rip-offs—including those such as BLACKWATER VALLEY EXORCISM—that followed in the speed-boat-wake of recent success like THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE—the project is never going to be anything other than a curio for genre fans and/or required viewing for Naschy completests. "
Severed Head Network: Review by Tex Massacre, "
It’s rare that a film set captures my attention from the moment the main menu arrives on the screen. But, in a stark black and white state, a nude woman steps into frame and proceeds down a staircase to a basement of terrors. This opening short which could best be described as Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase brought to life by David Lynch is a 3-minute introductory sequence by the filmmakers of Wicked Pixel—the production company collective that are responsible for the compellation—and it virtually defines what the viewer is about to witness in this collection."
Left for Dead: Review by Ryan Daley, "
Much like some of DePalma’s best early efforts, Left for Dead is over-directed and stylish as hell. The film was shot entirely in Argentina, and Pyun frequently rips his camera through the woods and into some of the coolest location shots this side of a rich Italian giallo. Although the film could benefit from more gunplay and a few additional blood spatters, Left for Dead is a dark, slick, and edgy western streaked with gore and a lean sense of style."
The Other Side: Review by Ryan Daley, "
All of these successful elements rooster-tail into a surprisingly brilliant, albeit EXTREMELY low budget, debut feature. It’s easily the most effective and accomplished Z-grade horror flick I’ve seen this year."
The Empty Acre: Review by John Marrone, "
The Empty Acre is a solid unique tale without fireworks that should satisfy that mental hunger for what we so often find ourselves without - a simple, original and effective horror movie."
Dead Men Walking: Review by John Marrone, "
Amateur acting, low production value, massive amounts of puke, entrails, and blood. The story never even attempts to try and explain why these biologically reanimated infectants are hungry for flesh and have to try and bite you,"
