Moviehole.net broke the news this evening that a remake of the classic 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, Total Recall, is in the works - and has been for quite some time... sort of. Click the link for this interesting story and watch for more news as it comes in. In the original... when a man goes for virtual vacation memories of the planet Mars, an unexpected and harrowing series of events forces him to go to the planet for real, or does he? David Cronenberg nearly directed the film, which was eventually lensed by Paul Verhoeven. The only way I'm behind this remake is if Cronenberg does it this time.
OK! This is just getting insane. I don't mind remakes once in a while but this is getting way out of hand! Total Recall was ahead of its time. It has so much significance to our present problems....no need for a remake.
I think the kneejerk here is to go "Nooooo!" But I can't believe that Verhoeven and Arnie's movie really remained faithful to the Philip K. Dick story "We can remember it for you Wholesale". In fact I bet they turned a pretty smart sci-fi flick into an action packed bloodbath. Which is fine. I actually wouldn't mind seeing a new version of this. Just don't dare call it Total Recall...
Folks, it's not called a remake if it's based on a book by Phillip K. Dick.
This is obviously going to be a more faithful adaptation of the book and not an Arnold action vehicle.
Are all the slew of Frankenstein films remakes? I think not.
What the hell. Seriously. Total Recall is a classic and has no business being remade. Who the hell could they get to play a better role than Arnie or Ironside? Why has America run out of originality?
