One of the best genre shows in recent memory was the "Buffy" spinoff "Angel", which aired for five seasons on the WB. It began as more of a detective show, with little to no overall story arcs á la Buffy. However, as the show progressed it became more mythology driven, but not to the point of incoherency, and the 5th (and best) season finally found the best balance of story arcs and accessibility. And then they canceled it. But now you can relive the entire run of the show with a new deluxe set, similar to the Buffy set that was released two years ago. Read on for the specs and an image of the box, and chuckle along as they refer to it as a "sci-fi action-thriller".

THE LOST SOULS OF THE CITY OF ANGELS PREPARE TO BE SAVED

“ANGEL” COLLECTOR’S SET

30 Disc DVD Set Features Series’ Entire 100-plus Episodes, Collectible Booklet And More

Arriving In Time For Gift Giving On October 30, 2007 From Fox Home Entertainment

CENTURY CITY, Calif. – Faith will be restored and souls will be saved when the vampire cursed with a human soul returns to fight demons on the dark side in the “Angel” Collector’s Set DVD arriving October 30, 2007 from Fox Home Entertainment. For the first time ever, all five seasons of the hit supernatural drama will be packaged together in a 30-disc special collector’s box uniquely designed for the ultimate fan. The collection features all 110 episodes, a personally signed letter to fans from creator Joss Whedon and a collectible companion booklet. The sci-fi action-thriller, created by Joss Whedon as a “spin-off” to the international cult sensation “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” became a wildly successful series among critics and fans alike. Nominated for a total of twenty-two SaturnÒ Awards during its entire run, the show garnered the win for Best Network Series (2004), as well as two Best Actor wins for David Boreanaz (“Bones”) who stars as the mysterious and tortured Angel. The series also stars Saturn Award winners for Best Supporting Actor and Actress James Marsters (“Buffy The Vampire Slayer”) as Vampire Spike and Amy Acker (“Alias”), as Winifred, the beautiful scientist and detective who has become a trusted member of Angel’s team. The series also stars Alexis Denisof (“Buffy The Vampire Slayer”) as demon hunter Wesley Wyndam-Price, J. August Richards (“Conviction”) as the street savvy vampire turned take-no-prisoner lawyer and Andy Hallett (Geppetto’s Secret) as the witty and charismatic karaoke-singing demon Lome. The “Angel” Collector’s Set will be available for the suggested retail price of $139.98. Prebook is October 3, 2007.

This is good news for sure. Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are my two favorite shows. With an amazing combination of humor, character and story development, and some of the best horror ever in television shows both Angel and Buffy show how great of a storytelling vehicle television can be. Watching most TV is like eating junk food, with Angel and Buffy you feel like you've eaten a real meal. I can come off of watching Angel or Buffy episodes feeling like I do when I've watched some of my favorite movies. Angel is the darker of the two, and while both have enough horror elements to potentially appeal to patrons of this fine web site if you want to go the darkest series watch Angel. I think you should watch both though. The fact is this though that I can point at the numerous books written praising and analyzing these series, the devoted fan base, and the critical and academic acclaim, while this all could add up to a convincing argument that these just aren't two normal shows, the thing is that it comes down to your opinions. We all like different things and some people may not find the wonder I've found in watching these shows. And that's cool. I just would like to say that personally I think these shows rock so much more then a lot of stuff, and you should watch them. But hey, whatever you dig you dig. It's all good, except, you know, when it's not. Adios all. Have a good night. God bless. -Patrick (http://www.myspace.com/journeymystery)

X-Files was great for seasons 1-5, and then fell apart for the majority of 6-9. Angel's best episode may not be as good as the best X-Files, but it was more consistent overall. Thus, its worst episode was far better than the worst episodes of X. So I personally would much rather have this than all the X-Files episodes, since about 1/3 of them weren't even worth watching once.
