McFarlane Talks 'Spawn' Remake, Spawn's a Mute?!

If there's one movie I'm dying to see (next to Tortured Souls) it's another Spawn from creator Todd McFarlane. The first was way ahead of it's time, similar to what happened with the original Fantastic Four movie, but now that special FX are kicking major arse I foresee a really badass version of Spawn in the pipeline - one where Spawn doesn't have a nose. Read on for an interesting interview.

MTV asks Todd McFarlane: The thing that I've always found cool about "Spawn" is that it's its own type of scary. It's not Rob Zombie's "Halloween" or Eli Roth's "Hostel."

McFarlane replies with some really interesting comments, "Right, I'd call this more of a suspense thriller. I'm going to use a big example which may seem sort of loopy, but to me it's closer to "Jaws" in that — and this is one of the problems that some of the studios had — Spawn won't talk. He's just a being in this movie — which again, some people may find odd — but, you know, Jaws didn't talk a hell of a lot in his movie either. But you knew that when he came out, something was going to happen. You know what I mean? You've made the presence known enough that nothing good was going to come of his presence being there.

So it's sort of the same concept. I'm not going for Freddy Krueger horror and I'm not going for Spider-Man action superhero. I'm not even going for a guy who's going to sit there and talk. You're never actually ever going to see him in his cape or costume in any kind of direct light. It's just going to be this thing that's just going to come, and if it's there then buddy, you're going to have a bad day.

that's sweet. so it's like he's starting a horror movie based on the character where he stays in the shadows, which will be fuckin' awesome, especially for Spawn, but then, if you actually want to learn anything about what Spawn is, his origin and the nature of his curse, then you have a whole history of comics to delve into, which will open up a whole other part of him which you can understand while watching the films! THAT'S SUCH AN AWESOME, EPIC IDEA!!!! can't wait for this movie!!!

naw man, you guys are looking at it the whole wrong way. he's trying to make an artistic horror movie vision of spawn, kind of like what normal people and his victims would see him as since he's always in the shadows lurking, watching. but, then when you wanna know who the person behind those shadows really is, you go back to the comics and start from the beginning and follow that whole journey, and discover it goes beyond just "Spawn" and it's a curse that's lasted for centuries and there's been many hellspawns, and that opens it up to the whole spawn universe. i think it's an awesome way to approach the movie scene, cause it's an original idea, and has potential of really kicking some major ass and being violent, brooding, gritty, and sick... just like how spawn was created and how he should've been portrayed on film in the first place! i thought the original spawn film sucked compared to what he is in the comics, and didn't do spawn or todd mcfarlane any justice at all. but, it's good he's looking back at it that it was a victim of it's time, and sort of like a test run... just like, "what happened with the original Fantastic Four movie" as it was said in the BD post. seriously guys, i think this is an awesomely innovative way of thinking for todd to proceed with the spawn films... and you guys should be excited too for the possibilities! have an open mind about it...

I don't know what Todd is thinking but hopefully is works. It sounds like it won't be any good to someone who knows everything about Spawn. How can he go without Clown? How can he go without anything that makes sense in the Spawn world? "Think of the Godfather with the boogyman in it" ? I think Todd is slightly out of his mind. I agree with the whole lurking the shadows thing but that gets boring when you use it the whole time. What do I know though I guess I'll have to wait and see. That is if this thing even gets made.
