'1408' Scores Big at #2, Has PG-13 Horror Prevailed?

Dimension Films' Stephen King adaptation 1408 (review) took in an estimated $20,175,000 for the #2 spot at the box office, making it the single highest grossing weekend opening for a King adaptation! This also makes 1408 the only really successful horror film of 2007, further prepping the genre for a major climate change... to PG-13. Could it be that the general horror audience is sick of the buckets of blood and guts? I personally can care less about ratings so long as the the film is meant to be PG-13 (can you imagine a PG-13 Halloween or Saw IV?) The success of the film, however, is extremely important to the genre as it has shown that even in the midst of big summer movie madness a little horror film can still steal a chunk of change from the likes of Spidey, Shrek, The Fantastic Four and others. Horror lives baby! Even if it's a little softer.

I know your just playing right? People who think this movie will suck because it's rating or anything for that matter is wrong. This is a movie that plays with your mind, it uses suspense and is one of those "wtf" just happened kind of movies, and you don't need gore to do that, thats the differance between this is some kind of slasher, or sequel to a established franchise ala Die Hard 4.

I love how people are claiming the death of Rated R horror mainly due to Hostel II. If Hostel II were any good, it would have made money. 1408 looks great, and I would see it whether it were PG-13 or R

Nudity, Gore and sex are rated R. Fear doesn't have to be. A real horror fan knows that...

PG-13 or R, no matter what rating this movie would have got, it still would have been good cause it's a stephen king adaption. And to sum it up Stephen king is the "KING" of writing horror! We all know that stephen king adaptions fucking kick ass! That's why this movie is sucessful cause it's STEPHEN KINGS STUFF WOOT WOOT HAHA!

YOu guys are all dead on... a good movie is a good movie. It's just too bad that if a good movie NEEDS to be rated R it wont get made - or will be edited down.

This movie was f****** awesome! Like jasonlives1986 said, you can't look at a horror movie by the rating this movie was a mind playing game and made you ask what would happen next, or made you question what happened. All in all, I give it 4 stars. I think it could have had a better ending.

It should of been R then would of been good for R rated movies

When I first read this it seemed real obvious to me, and it seems pretty plain to a few of you as well. Good movies make money. I'm sure Cusack, Jackson and King bumped up the boxoffice a couple mil, but 1408 has been getting great reviews. This may come as a shock but Hostel 2, Hills 2, and Grindhouse flopped because they were bad movies. R ratings, gore, and violence had nothing to do with their miserable theater runs. 300 was a smash success, and just as bloody as anything else in the horror genre so far. Expect the Rob Zombie Halloween remake to be yet another flop in 2007...

Sure, it was a good movie. However, my theater experience was anything but. From now on, any movie that has a pg-13 rating attached will be put on my list of things to look for on DVD.

Y'know I get so tired of hearing horror fans complain about PG-13. I could care less if it's PG rated or R rated. As long as it's well made and delivers a good film. You don't need gore, tons of nudity shots or a film filled with a lot of cussing. I mean the old horror films never had those and look at them they still deliver and are great films. I know times have changed but a good film is a good film regardless of rating.
