Lionsgate's 'Cujo' Special Edition Goes Widescreen?!

Paramount scrapped the release and now Lionsgate Home Entertainment will finally put out the special edition of Cujo, the adaptation of the Stephen King novel, which was directed by Lewis Teague. Inside you'll find the specs, which include some extremely disappointing specs - hopefully it's a mistake? In the film a friendly St. Bernard named "Cujo" contracts rabies and conducts a reign of terror on a small American town.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment still has the rights to Stephen King's CUJO and they plan to release a new special edition on September 25th, according to Davis DVD. The disc arrives with a fullscreen transfer (!), a Dolby Digital 2.0 track, an audio commentary by director Lewis Teague and "Dog Days: The Making of Cujo," a documentary featuring all-new interviews with Teague, Dee Wallace, Dan Pintauro, producers Daniel H. Blatt and Robert Singer, King biographer Douglas E. Winter and others.

The doc is split into three parts (PART 1: The novel by Stephen King, how director Lewis Teague got involved, the screenplay adaptation, the casting, the locations, expressing a boy's fears visually, the challenging filming conditions. PART 2: Filming with the dogs, the inventive way of choreographing the attacks, working with the actors, finding the right ending for the film. PART 3: The editing, the scoring, the sneak previews, CUJO 24 years later...). Retail is $19.98.

I'm buying this the day it comes out, just to trade up from my full screen bare bones release.

The movie was shot open matte, and cropped for theatrical release, so the full screen transfer sounds like it's the actual proper aspect ratio for the movie.

While leaving the matte open for a full-screen presentation on dvd means we aren't losing any visual information, it was never mean't to be seen this way. The shots were composed for widescreen, so it will not look as good artisticly.

I love this flick but I think I'll wait for a widescreen release with a 5.1 audio track.

Fangoria are saying this will be widescreen.
