The story has been coming in full force to both of my ears and we are in the process of trying to confirm or at least "understand" what the future holds for Dimension Films' Grindhouse, which underperformed at the box office last month. Because there were two movies filmed - Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" and Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" - the exact details of what could happen are up in the air. Inside we have details on what we might see happen in the near future, although we are still awaiting confirmation and/or clarification.
What we're told is that if the Cannes screening of the extended version of Tarantino's "Death Proof" is a success, you can count on seeing the film released solo here in the States. We've also been told that Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" might also see a release too.
But just last week we were hearing mumblings of "Planet Terror" hitting DVD sometime in the fall without any word of Tarantino's. Does this mean they've already made a decision on "Death Proof" or are they just releasing the DVDs on separate street dates?
Like I said, B-D is digging and will report back as soon as we find out more. Needless to say, it sounds like we have some interesting news coming shortly.
Grindhouse – noun – A downtown movie theater - in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace of the '30s and '40s - known for "grinding out" non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies.
From groundbreaking directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes the ultimate film experience: a double-bill of thrillers that will recall both filmmakers’ favorite exploitation films. “Grindhouse” will be presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director -- Tarantino’s film, “Death Proof,” is a rip-roaring slasher flick where the killer pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, while Rodriguez’s film explores an alien world eerily familiar to ours in “Planet Terror.”
by "released solo here in the states" do you mean theatrical or dvd? cause i think the indv. thtr. releases would help make back some money in they can afford more prints. i would say they could kill, but there is already so much competition lined up at the BO this year. as for dvd releases, i want indv. ext. releases with at least 2 disc each for bonus features.
I hope they still bring out both on a single DVD. I really enjoyed both features and the trailers, and while the theater seat got unconfortable when Death Proof came in, I would like to see the whole thing from the comfort of my bed. :)
Quentin, Robert, if you read this...please, please, PLEASE release Grindhouse as a DVD set with both films and the trailers. I didn't get to see it in theater and I feel that I have missed out. :(
