Crazy untrained stuntman turned actor Johnny Knoxville is taking a leap to a new type of danger... horror. Writer-director Paul Soter (part of Broken Lizard) is looking to cast Knoxville in his upcoming zombie-thriller, which is yet to receive a title. Johnny Knoxville may be more known for shooting bolts of electricity through his flesh than for serious roles, but Paul Soter is out to change that. The writer and director is looking to cast the “Jackass” star in his upcoming zombie thriller, according to MTV.
Like his recently premiered Cillian Murphy/Lucy Liu flick “Watching the Detectives,” this would be a decided change of pace for Soter. The filmmaker is best known to audiences as a member of Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind cult favorites like “Super Troopers” and “Beerfest.” That means moviegoers heading into theaters expecting laughs might be disappointed. “[It’s] not a comedy at all. It’s a horror thriller,” he revealed of the new, still untitled film he wrote and hopes to direct. “I’ve always wanted to make some contribution to the zombie genre and this is a different way to do that.”
On the plot, Soter explained, “It’s about a small Colorado town and there’s a forest fire nearby and it ignites these lost barrels of toxic who knows what. It blows this toxic ash into town and makes all the dogs go apeshit. The lead guy is in a custody battle for his son and has him for the weekend. He’s a firefighter and drops off his son at school and goes into town to fight the fire when he realizes what’s going on. So he’s on one side of town. His eight-year-old boy is on the other side of town. He’s got to get through this army of rabid dogs to get his son.” Whether or not he’ll get his leading man remains to be seen. “[Knoxville] has shown some interest,” says the helmer.
