A bunch of new MPAA ratings came in this afternoon and both are extremely news worthy. First and foremost Lionsgate's Sundance acquisition Teeth (review, interviews) scored a solid "R" rating - and from rumblings around us we hear the film still has its balls (yeah I'm funny, I know). But before you can put on the party hats and celebrate a genre victory, we have another uphill battle raging forth. It was revealed that Adam Green's Hatchet (review) has been given an NC-17, which is f-cking preposterous if you ask me. The movie is so over-the-top and fun that I don't see how anyone could take it that serious. Yay MPAA, thanks for ruining our party. We're told Anchor Bay intends on appealing (good for them!). Talk about it inside.
I'd rather Hatchet went out with an NC-17 than had to be edited for an R though...
actually isnt there supposed to be a "HARD R" rating? Let Hatchet be the inaugural film for it!! It's the best horror movie of the year, hands down. There's more fun in 90 minutes of Hatchet than 3.5 hrs of Grindhouse...
I saw a screening of Hatchet at FantasticFest in Austin, and let me tell you, it EARNS its NC-17... It's probably the most violent slasher to come out of Hollywood in quite some time...
as the extreme die hard horror fan that i am, it seems quite simple. the NC-17 rating needs to be used, that's what it's there for, and that's exactly where alot or i should say more films NEED to go. The strength of all the horror fans need to support that and yes, Anchor Bay needs to appeal, but it should also be released as an NC-17.
