Gigantic news this evening as IESB has reported that Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes) will helm Dimension's remake of Piranha. Chuck Russell, who wrote the screenplay, was originally attached to direct. More news as it comes in, watch for an official announcement soon! Piranha was a Jaws spoof directed by Joe Dante and produced by Roger Corman in 1978. Universal Studios tried to stop the film from being released (because of its satirizing of Universal's Jaws films), but Steven Spielberg saw the film in advance and liked it. There was a sequel - Piranha II: The Spawning, which was the directorial debut of one James Cameron.
Why is it that Aja only does remakes of other people's work?
High Tension (remake of Intensity), Hills Have eyes, P2 (similar in plot to Throttle), Piranha...
who cares that he keeps doing remakes or re-imaginings? his movies are fun and entertaining, that's good enough for me.
