Hot off the socko bow of "300" this past weekend, star Gerard Butler is at the center of a package that CAA began shopping Monday for a remake of John Carpenter's 1981 actioner Escape From New York, according to Variety. Neal Moritz is attached to produce, with "Black Hawk Down" scribe Ken Nolan penning the screenplay. Several studios are battling for the pic, mostly because the $70 million launch of "300" signaled the arrival of an emerging action star in Butler. A deal is expected to be made this week. Butler would play Snake Plissken, the one-eyed convict who's charged with heading into the inescapable maximum security prison formerly known as Manhattan to liberate the U.S. president. Kurt Russell originated the role and reprised it in the 1996 sequel "Escape to L.A."
You gotta be fucking kidding me! Why do these people always remake movies that are ALREADY awesome? Can't they remake shitty movies so that they're good?! I guess that's too much to ask from the massive creative black hole that Hollywood is.
The Halloween remake was a wise decision, because there were no ideas left to continue the series. But, Escape From New York is a bad idea. This film wouldn't work. How can you replace Kurt Russell, Donald Pleasence and Adrienne Barbeau? This will bomb at the cinema, just like Carpenter's other classic, The Fog.
Anyone who bitches about a remake of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and not the HALLOWEEN remake is a pathetic fucking hypocrite.I don't care how much you love THE DEVIL'S RETARDS or how many sequels HALLOWEEN has. It's the same deal. Thanks remake supporters. Thanks for encouraging Hollywood to keep making this shit by spending money on it.Thanks for nothing.
This is like remaking the omen or the wicker man, oh wiat they already did those and they were horrible. I like butler but his is a huge mistake, they should be making escape from earth and not a remake, this byrns me up.
I am officially p*ssed off. If they want to relaunch this series, why not just do a third f**king 'Escape' movie instead of a remake of the first? You don't see the Bond franchise relaunching itself every few years by remaking 'Dr. No', do you? Idiots.
