Last week (here) we broke the news on more casting news for Platinum Dunes and Mandate Pictures' Horsemen, which will be directed by Jonas Akerlund. Today we received the official press release announcing the start of principal photography and adding a bunch of new names to the mix. Read on for the skinny.

Principal photography has begun on “Horsemen,” a crime thriller starring Dennis Quaid (“The Day After Tomorrow,” “Far From Heaven,” “Traffic”) and Ziyi Zhang (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) it was announced today by Nathan Kahane, Mandate Pictures’ President – Motion Pictures Group.

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund (“Spun”) from a screenplay by David Callaham, the film is produced by Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay (“Transformers”), Andrew Form (”The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”) and Brad Fuller (“The Amityville Horror”). The executive producers are Mandate Pictures’ Joe Drake (“Stranger Than Fiction,” upcoming “30 Days of Night”) and Nathan Kahane (“The Grudge,” “Stranger Than Fiction”), and Radar Pictures’ Ted Field (“The Amityville Horror,” “The Last Samurai”) and Joe Rosenberg (“Waist Deep,” upcoming “The Heartbreak Kid”). Mandate’s Kelli Konop, Nicole Brown and Radar Pictures’ Mike Weber are the film’s co-producers.

The film’s co-stars include Lou Taylor Pucci (“Thumbsucker”), Clifton Collins, Jr. (“Capote”), Barry Shabaka Henley (“Miami Vice”), Neil McDonough (“Flags of Our Fathers”), Patrick Fugit (Saved!, Almost Famous) and Peter Stormare (“Fargo”), who is reunited with “Horsemen” director Jonas Åkerlund following their collaboration on “Spun.”

“’Horsemen’ is a film we've been passionate about for a long time,” says Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller. “We are thrilled to be making it with such a stellar cast and a gifted filmmaker, Jonas Åkerlund, as well as our production partners, Mandate Pictures and Radar Pictures.”

“Horsemen” tells the story of hardened detective Aidan Breslin, (Quaid) who, having grown increasingly distant from his two young sons since the death of his wife, now finds himself thrust into an investigation of perverse serial killings rooted in the Biblical prophecy of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. As Breslin grapples with each new revelation in the case, he slowly discovers a shocking connection between himself and the four suspects. Four Horsemen. Four unrelated victims. Four painful secrets. Come and See.

The film also reunites director Åkerlund with director of photography Eric Broms and costume designer B., both of whom collaborated with Åkerlund on the feature film “Spun.” The creative production team also includes production designer Sandy Cochrane (upcoming “Chaos Theory”) and film editor Jim May (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”).

“Horsemen” will shoot for eight weeks in and around the Winnipeg, Manitoba area.
