Rumor has it that Warner Premiere – the newly constructed direct to video sequel arm of Warner Bros – might be looking at bringing the kings of the midnight munchies back for another bite. If it happens, the brains behind the original 80s hit won’t be happy.
Talking to Empire Magazine, Producer Michael Finnell mentioned that “they [WB] might do a low-budget direct-to-DVD version”, but neither he nor director Joe Dante would donate their services to it.
According to Dante, “Gremlins was governed by the technology that produced it. Now it would be CHI, and you could do anything. There may be places for the jokes to go [The White House?]. But you’ve got a company who owns the rights to a movie that they don’t quite understand. I think it’s going to be difficult for them to make another one”.
I just don't get it. If you know your movie is going to be direct to video, why bother make it? Nobody is going to see it. I horror movie is one thing, but Gremlins was a blockbuster. It was a huge hit. People are going to see that laying on store shelves and think, "DTV, it must suck." You can get away with DTV with a movie like Bloody Murder, but not Gremlins.
I really hope that this finally happens, although CGI would be complete crap, but at least it might get the merchandising out there again! lol... bring on Gremlins 3, bring on the puppets! (I hope)
In regards to the Ghostbusters CGI movie I said "CGI is better then none"...unfortunately this logic does not transfer over to Gremlins. The Gremlins HAVE to be animatronic, without question. If they made a Gremlins 3, and actually put the time and effort into it and sprung for the animatronics, it would be HUGE! CGI Gremlins would look cartoony and stupid. When are these studio execs gonna pull their heads out of their asses?
