If you thought remaking Faces of Death was odd, here's one that's sure to make your eye twitch -- Relevant Entertainment has acquired rights to and will remake the 1980 cult horror film Cannibal Holocaust. Whether or not this changes Italian helmer Ruggero Deodato's plans to helm a sequel to his own film is yet to be seen. Read on for the skinny.

Variety reports:

Relevant Entertainment has acquired rights to and will remake the 1980 cult horror film "Cannibal Holocaust." It's aiming for a summer start.

Relevant partner Michael Menchel and associate Steve Whitney will produce. The project is fully financed by Keith Previte of Scorched Earth Entertainment and Catherine Williams, who also will serve as producers. Paul Mason, Jordan Rush and Larry Joackim will exec produce.

The original, directed by Italian helmer Ruggero Deodato, has been banned in dozens of countries due to its gore and violence. Pic centers on a professor traveling to South America to find out what happened to a film crew that disappeared while shooting a documentary about reputed cannibal tribes. He eventually discovers the remains of the crew and several reels of undeveloped film, which show the disastrous consequences of the crew's decision to provoke the natives.

Deodato shot the pic in documentary style and was jailed briefly after the Italian premiere until he could prove the actors were unharmed.

Whitney, who spent six months securing the rights, previously partnered with Previte for the 2005 remake of "The Amityville Horror." Whitney and Previte also exec produced "Borderland" for Lionsgate.

Relevant's in pre-production on "Haunting in Connecticut" for Gold Circle/Lionsgate and is developing "The Tortoise and the Hippo" for Walden Media and "Pledged" for Paramount.

Listen, Hollywood this is the last straw. Am tired of your chessy remakes. this has to be the last. Am tired of it. Its all about making money and having franchies. It stinks 100%. When we look back on the years of the reamkes, there was no good films anymore. MOVIES are starting to hurt watching because it is so stuipd boring, waste of time. If they remake this film, its over for me on seeing another dam remake. THE FOG.

Messing with some classics was bad enough. But messing with THE CLASSIC is beyond belief. Why? Hey, I am going to re-write the bible and some nude scenes and pedophilia...think it will sell? Figure it out. Leave this one alone!

What the fuck? Oh my god! Phil Anselmo will commit suicide over this one! AAAHHHHHH!!!!! Look, stop fucking with films that are perfect from the start. You can improve nothing on Cannibal Holocaust. Films to leave alone: Cannibal Holocaust Cannobal Ferox Amazonia Eaten Alive! Dr. Butcher MD Zombie The Beyond Susperia ANYTHING BY ARGENTO, DEODATO, FULCI, BRUNO MATTEI, ROMERO, etc. I mean...WHY WHY WHY!!????? There is a film script floating around right now on MySpace and some other sites that needs to be made, not these remakes. Look for "DREAMS" Holy Shit! That is what we need to make, leave the classics alone! Check it out: http://www.buried.com/cgi-bin/horrorfiction/fiction.c gi?action=view&id=584

This is gonna suck. It's either gonna be a toned down exploitation flick like Wrong Turn, or the makers are gonna try and make a twisted movie and totally fail big time. This will be a disater.

Don't get me wrong, Cannibal Holocaust is a good horror film and all but come on people! It's not the Holy Grail of the horror genre either. People act like this movie shouldn't be touched and yet seem to forget how far better films like Psycho, The Haunting, The Omen and many others have already been trashed via inferior remakes. Everything is fair game. Personally, I think it's stupid and pointless, but I say that for all these remakes. Don't act so surprised. Blame the brain dead ADD inflicted teens who eat up this stuff because they refuse to watch anything made before 1990.
