MTV scored a whopper of a scoop courtesy of big time Hollywood Producer Dino de Laurentiis, who tells of more possible sequels in the Hannibal Lecter anthology. Read on for the skinny and check out Dimensions' Hannibal Rising in theaters February 9. Peter Webber directs the latest installment, which stars Gong Li, Gaspard Ulliel, Rhys Ifans and Kevin McKidd.
Moviehole.net disovered the following news: De Laurentiis tells MTV that Hannibal could become an even bigger evil superstar with more series installments. "How many James Bond [movies are] there? ... Every two years a James Bond movie [seemingly] comes out," de Laurentiis reasoned, adding that any future Lecter story would likely center on the unusual relationship between Lecter and his "Rising" love interest, Gong Li. "You see in the movie that ... it's an attraction, but nothing serious happens," de Laurentiis said. "In the future, maybe something happens, if we go with [another sequel]... I presume that we created a success with this new franchise about young Hannibal Lecter, and I want to start to think about going ahead with the story.”
In Hannibal Rising: At last, the evolution of his evil is revealed. Hannibal Lecter emerges from the nightmare of the Eastern Front, a boy in the snow, mute, with a chain around his neck. He seems utterly alone, but he has brought his demons with him. Hannibal's uncle, a noted painter, finds him in a Soviet orphanage and brings him to France, where Hannibal will live with his uncle and his uncle's beautiful and exotic wife, Lady Murasaki. Lady Murasaki helps Hannibal to heal. With her help he flourishes, becoming the youngest person ever admitted to medical school in France. But Hannibal's demons visit him and torment him. When he is old enough, he visits them in turn. He discovers he has gifts beyond the academic, and in that epiphany, Hannibal Lecter becomes death's prodigy.
If the TV spots for this movie are any indication of the film as a whole, then I think someone owes Hannibal Lector a great big apology. For starters, what's with the baby heads?! Everything that was showcased in the trailer goes against Hannibal's later sense of refinement. I don't believe for a second that Hannibal was some vicious, out-of-control killer; That's too low-class for someone of his distinction. If the film does, indeed, paint Hannibal as just another disturbed young boy from an abusive family, then DeLaurentis and company should stop with the prequels right now!
Anyone who goes to see the film should read the book first, it's a quick read even for those who don't like to read, I read it in a weekend. I haven't seen the TV spots as I don't waste my time watching much TV, but the movie trailer is right on with the book. As always with any book, don't directly compare the movie as one always is disappointed when a book has to be chopped into a 90 minute to 2 hour flick, but at least you'll have an understanding as to why Hannibal became such "monster". I hope the story eventually continues with another book or two (and movies) to bring us up to the time when Lecter is caught in Baltimore. Hannibal Lecter has to be one of the best horror/physcological fiend since Jack the Ripper.
Each film is guaranteed to be 10 times worse than the one that preceeded it. Dino just likes to milk every last cent from anything that resembles a positive cash-flow. Honestly, Hannibal wasn't that great in itself.
