Tartan Ramps Up for 2007

Company Acquires Slate of Eclectic Horror Films Showcasing the New Faces of Asia Extreme™ and Beyond

LOS ANGELES — Nov. 17, 2006 — For Immediate Release — Continuing the momentum established by the ongoing success of its Asia Extreme™ label, Tartan Films USA and its home entertainment arm Tartan Video USA are adding eight new films to their library of acclaimed independent films in the wake of the American Film Market (AFM), it was announced today by Tartan Video USA President Tony Borg.

Established in September 2004, Tartan USA already boasts a library of more than 60 world-renowned independent films. The library includes Tartan’s Asia Extreme™ line of horror, thriller and action films, a fast-growing contemporary genre featuring the best of cinema from the Far East with such cult favorites as Takashi Shimizu’s MAREBITO, Park Chanwook’s 2004 Cannes Grand Jury Prize Winner OLDBOY and his follow-up classic LADY VENGEANCE. Tartan is adding to its impressive collection of Asian features with the following titles:

ARANG (Korea) - A pair of detectives attempt to solve a serial murder case that seems to be connected to a haunted website and an incident that happened to a young girl years earlier. Released in Korea in 2006, the film is based on Korean folklore. Scheduled for 2007 DVD release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Justin Choi of Lotte Cinema.

CINDERELLA (Korea) – When a plastic surgeon begins performing cosmetic surgery on high school students, it’s a dream come true for her patients. But beauty has a price, and when her patients begin committing suicide, a dark secret is revealed. Scheduled for 2007 DVD release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Judy Ahn of Showbox.

THE GHOST (Korea) - A teenage girl suffering from amnesia discovers that she is somehow connected to a group of people who are being killed off one by one by a vengeful ghost. Scheduled for 2007 DVD release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Judy Ahn of Showbox.
DORM (Thailand) – A young boy is forced to attend boarding school where his classmates bully him and his teachers scold him. The only saving grace he finds is in a friendship with a mysterious young boy. Scheduled for 2007 DVD release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Ruedee Pholthaweechi of GMM Tai Hub.

SHUTTER (Thailand) - A young photographer and his girlfriend discover mysterious shadows in their photographs after fleeing the scene of a tragic accident. Scheduled for early 2007 DVD release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Ruedee Pholthaweechi of GMM Tai Hub.

TO SIR WITH LOVE (Korea) – Now in their 20’s, six former classmates reunite in honor of their former elementary school teacher. The grudges that each student bears against the teacher come to light when they realize a killer is among them. Scheduled for early 2007 DVD release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Michelle Son of Showeast.

Tartan is also announcing the acquisition of two titles to be released under the Tartan Video brand, a label of eclectic—and often controversial—feature length films from around the globe that includes Romanian Oscar entry THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU, Michael Winterbottom’s 9 SONGS and Carlos Reygades’ “Mexican Masterpiece” BATTLE IN HEAVEN. The two new acquisitions are:

TAXIDERMIA (Hungary) – A grandfather, father and son are linked together by a story that blends historical facts and surrealism to find the horror and beauty in the chaotic mess of life. Scheduled for 2007 Theatrical release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Michael Werner of Fortissimo.

SLAUGHTER NIGHT (Netherlands) - A young, paranormally gifted student and a group of friends enter an old coal mine and unleash the spirit of a satanic killer hell-bent on revenge. Scheduled for early 2007 DVD release. The deal was negotiated by Jane Giles of Tartan Films and Elisar Cabrera of High Point Films.

“Tartan always wants to be on the cutting edge of cinema, regardless of genre,” said Tony Borg, President of Tartan Video. “It’s exciting to be able to continue building our Asia Extreme™ brand with the very best in Asian cinema while also putting the focus on our vision of the Tartan Video brand to bring the most unique films from around the world to our shores.”

The next titles set for release on DVD via the Asia Extreme™ and Tartan Video brands include the December 26th release SHEITAN, a French horror film starring Vincent Cassell, the January 16th release PERTH, Singapore’s answer to TAXI DRIVER, and January 20th release of the Hong Kong thriller DIVERGENCE.

Tartan Video is distributed by Genius Products.

Tartan’s theatrical arm, Tartan Films, is currently in the platform theatrical release of the Mongolian film THE CAVE OF THE YELOW DOG. Up next is THE PAGE TURNER, a French tale of love, betrayal and revenge which will open in limited release on February 9th, followed by Academy-Award© winning director Andrea Arnold’s RED ROAD, set for March 9th limited release. All of the films will expand nationally.

Hamish McAlpine, the founder and owner of Tartan Films, who are celebrating twenty one years of distributing films in the UK, launched Tartan USA in 2004 with an eclectic and controversial slate of films from established auteurs and up-and-coming filmmakers. Previous Tartan film releases include 2004 Cannes Grand Jury Prize Winner OLDBOY, Michael Winterbottom’s 9 SONGS, the critically-acclaimed Romanian Oscar entry THE DEATH OF MR LAZARESCU and the final film in Park Chanwook’s “Vengeance Trilogy,” LADY VENGEANCE. Upcoming theatrical releases include 2006 Cannes Jury Prize Winner, Andrea Arnold’s RED ROAD and Danish Director Anders Morgenthaler’s half-animated/half-live-action PRINCESS.
