UPDATED: The Haunts Return in 'Poltergeist' Remake

Read on for the update: In 1982 MGM released one of the scariest films of all time, Poltergeist, which was written and produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper. The film is of legend, being that it's not only extremely scary, but that it was rated PG (after an appeal from an R). Word has come down from various confirmed sources that the once titled "Poltergeist: Kayeri" is now being retooled as a remake of the original film. Poltergeist, which is about a family's home being haunted by a host of ghosts, is now looking to attach a director. More details inside.

I've just received official confirmation that the original idea for "Kayeri" will NOT be used for the remake, instead the new film will be a straight-up remake of the first film... pretty much frame-for-frame. Just think Hills Have Eyes...

Although Clint Morris did write the original "Poltergeist Kayeri", it's not believed he is part of the new project.

In addition, I can also confirm that Zelda Rubinstein, Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams will not be part of the remake.

In the original, a young family are visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorise the family before they "kidnap" the youngest daughter.

Im speechless.... I thought the anouncements of The Thing, The Hitcher and Hellraiser were bad enough but this abomination takes the freaking cake. Some remakes are welcome and neccessary (when a movie is horribly dated or so low budget it was unintentionally campy ... ie. TCM, Hills Have Eyes even the ideas of remaking The Fog and When A Stranger Calls were well founded, just horribly executed) but again we have a movie that doesn't need any fixing being remade. Id say dont give these damn studios your money for this crap but I know its pointless. It'll open number 1 for its weekend and further this ridiculous trend of remakes we are enduring as of know.

i think this is the worst idea , since obviously no one from the original film will be involved. Steve spielberg nor tobe hooper will go near , and the most important ingredient Jerry GOldsmith has passed away. HIs score is one of the many reasons that film was great. There is not any young actors today that have the charisma nor range as Jobeth Williams and Craig T nelson and when these actors of today try , it comes off as fake and put on. Of course there gonna get some adorable 5 year old with long blonde hair to play Carol Anne, what they don't realize is that Heather O'Rourke portrayl of that character as is Zelda rubenstein playing Tangina. At least with Halloween you will have Rob Zombie who got John carpenter's blessing. He has respect for the material. I just dont think there gonna do poltergeist justice , I wish there was something we could all do to stop it. That film is classic ,and it will come out just as the psycho remake , pointless and made for pure money.

This is the most disturbing news about remakes so far. I don't think remakes are neccasary except for When a Stranger Calls because the original was pathetic. Simon West directed it a hell of a lot better and Jake Wade Wall wrote a truly suspensful script but enough about that. Poltergeist is one of the number one scariest haunted house flicks ever and the studios dare to reamke it? They will seriousily mess it up with the same old CGI shots and I doubt any actor today can touch Craig T. Nelson or JoBeth Williams or anyone in the original for that matter. The studio will probably get Brad and Angelina as the new parents and Britany because that's what the pop culture wants. More pretty faces that can't act. Angelina can act but that's it. I really hope that they don't go through with this one because it would be such a MISTAKE!!!!!!!!! I'm a true horror fan who doesn't want to see Poltergeist get massacred!

I read these boards all the time to get my movie news and hear what other people are saying about upcoming releases. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, has ever prompted me to write one myself. After hearing this news, I can't keep my mouth shut any longer. What the fuck is wrong with these assholes??!! What genius decided that it would be a good idea to remake the scariest film of all time? I despise most remakes unless they actually DO improve on the original (and there have been one or two) but this is total blasphemy. All along, I've been saying to myself "I don't care what they remake next, as long as it's not Poltergeist. No one would ever dare touch it". Just goes to show you how much I know. I agree with mgmjoe, something has to be done about this. Something HAS to be done about this.

From what I'm told NUMEROUS directors have turned down the offer to direct it... seems to be stressin' out the suits. Thumbs up to those brave individuals doing more than trying to score a paycheck.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out, though I don't hold much hope and I also think it is unnecessary. Still, I'd go to see it just for interest's sake. Poltergeist is one of my favourite movies because even though it is billed as a horror, in many ways it is played out as a drama. As well as this, it created solid, believable characters and features brilliant acting. And I totally agree about the amazing soundtrack! The book is brilliant as well, give it a read.

Actually, speaking of the book, if they wanted to make a film that could potentially turn out better than the original, they could borrow more heavily from the book, and include how Tangina met the family (in the book, she finds them, not the other way around) and show some of the dreams she had before. She was a far more interesting character in the book, and the plot made a lot more sense than the movie version. Also, I think the movie totally "sold out" at the end with the final scenes really only in there for cheap scares. This could be another area of improvement. Anyway, doesn't sound like this would happen, but I can dream...

Poltergeist? How About Airport 75 or Howard The Duck? Please... And how about Hillary Duff directing it? Huh?

I don't believe it for one second. If they do, I hope it fails and ruins many peoples reputations as Poltergeist to this day is one of the best films of all time and tbh, hasn't really dated at all. IF it does happen, I will be very upset to see them nodoubt utterly trash it. Come on guys, there's enough talent in Hollywood to find something new...ISN'T THERE??????
