John Carpenter's 'The Thing' Now Being Remade?!

Remember when it was going to be a TV spin-off and then there were claims that it was going to be a prequel? There was also a video game made and rumors of a sequel have been circulating for years -- but today it has become official, Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures will remake John Carpenter's frightener The Thing with the script will be written by "Battlestar Galactica" exec producer Ronald D. Moore. The 1982 original dealt with a shape-shifting creature from outer space that terrorizes researchers at an Antarctic facility. Read on for the skinny.

Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures will remake John Carpenter's frightener "The Thing."

Script will be written by "Battlestar Galactica" exec producer Ronald D. Moore. The 1982 original dealt with a shape-shifting creature from outer space that terrorizes researchers at an Antarctic facility, according to Variety.

Strike partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce and the company will co-finance the remake, to which Universal owned the rights. David Foster, who produced the original film, will exec produce.

Carpenter's film continued the storyline of the Howard Hawks-directed "The Thing From Another World." That 1951 film starred James Arness as an alien monster that wiped out workers at an Army radar station.

Carpenter's film opened with a team arriving to find that encampment has been wiped out. The alien moved from the body of one team member to another, so it was never quite clear who the villain was.

Both pictures were based on the John W. Campbell Jr. 1938 short story "Who Goes There?"

The producers said they consider the new film to be more "a companion piece" to the Carpenter film than a note-for-note remake.

Carpenter recently saw remakes done of his films "The Fog" and "Assault on Precinct 13," and Dimension Films has Rob Zombie reviving the Carpenter classic "Halloween" in what Zombie calls a cross between a remake and a prequel.

Strike and U release the comedy "Let's Go to Prison" today, and have a Dec. 25 release date on the Alfonso Cuaron-directed "Children of Men."

Strike's last redo foray was "Dawn of the Dead."

Moore, who's repped by CAA, just scripted an "I, Robot" sequel for Fox.

For the love of all that is horror holy. I don't mind the idea of remakes or just dismiss them without giving them a chance (if Im interested), but this one really bothers me. Why Why Why Why Why? There is nothing about this molvie that needs to be remade. Excellent acting, pacing, casting, effects, score..... I cant wait for the CW/WB/UPN cast, looking pretty over the regurgitated heavy metal soundtrack while they all stare vapidly at the CGI creature that they cant see. If you cant tell, Im not happy about this one.

Hey, you Hollywood morons! Instead of remaking this as some fucked-up CGI shitfest full of vacuous, pretty faces, why not just re-release a cleaned-up print of Carpenter's classic in cinemas, with the kind of huge marketing push that it originally deserved - but didn't get - back in the fucking '80s? No, you'd rather revamp it and reimagine it and remake it in the hope of kick-starting a shallow, modern-day money-making franchise by riding on the coat-tails of a classic. What's next on the list? Remakes of 'Jaws' and 'The Exorcist' because they don't have enough CGI in them, and Roy Scheider and Max Von Sydow need replacing with younger, ad-friendly faces? You're pathetic.

A remake of a remake. This is just sad.

Most remakes I'm all for -- but if they remake Aliens I'm gonna shoot myself.

How can you remake a perfect film? There's NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING they can do better than what John Carpenter, Rob Bottin, Ennio Morricone, Dean Cundey, Kurt Russell, Keith David, and yes, even A. Wilford Brimley did back in 1982! This is entirely pointless and purely, utterly unnecessary. -NJM

I think if they put the time, efort and money into this project, it could be good. The effects can be inproved and a lot of things that they couldn't do in Carpenter's version can be done here. I just hope they don't rely on CGI for this. A lot of Carpenter's movies have or are being remade, the Thing has just been added to the list. I can't say I'm disappointed, I'd like to see how this one turns out.

I really hope they don't do a remake I hate remakes! the original movie was great, sure some of the special effects are dated but others look good even today, casting was perfect and john carpenters sound track was creepy. look at the remake of "THE FOG" it sucked even worse than the original movie! They should do a sequel now that would be groovy!
