Halloween is nearly here and you've got some hard work to do- you need to find out what movies you need to rent (or buy) to show your friends throughout the month of October... and you don't want to look like a fool. Thank heavens (or hell) that you fortunate B-D readers have good guys like Don K, Texas Massacre and Room 237 to sift through all of those crappy direct to videos just to find you those few hidden gems. The other day we blasted you with a stack of new reviews (here) and now we've just added another seven, which you'll find inside. Read on and enjoy!
Rock n' Roll Nightmare: Tex Massacre writes: "I can tell you that I felt more than a bit of nostalgia when I hear the rumor that the legendary Rock n’ Roll Nightmare was making its way back to the video universe nearly 20 years after if first shook the halls of horrordom. But I don’t think I could have ever imagined a release that showered the film with the cheeky reverence it deserved."
Beyond the Walls of Sleep: Tex Massacre writes: "Leigh and Maurer, seem to understand that mythos and even try to incorporate a piece or two into the films climatic scenes, but with far too much “Look at what I can do” filmmaking mucking up the storyline, Beyond the Wall of Sleep is ultimately a failure of epic proportions."
Beyond the Darkness: Room 237 writes: "Those familiar with the sub-genre will no doubt like this film more than the less-seasoned viewers. It’s got all the hallmarks of Italian shock cinema, which I found actually added to my experience and was well within my usual comfort zone"
The Curse of Lizzie Borden: Don Krouskop writes: "It simply doesn’t have the polish or pacing to be taken seriously as a scary movie. Considering the potential for great contemporary slasher mayhem inherent in the notion of the ghost of a legendary real-life axe murderer, this CURSE frankly doesn’t quite cut it."
Do You Like Hitchcock?: Tex Massacre writes: "Those who have been disappointed by Argento’s output since the release of The Stendhal Syndrome may not find the filmmaker back in top fighting form, but Do You Like Hitchcock? still stands up as one of the better later day projects from one of few Masters of Horror to actually live up to the billing."
Mr. Jingles: Tex Massacre writes: "You can’t tell me that the filmmakers are happy about this - they shouldn’t be - and neither should the viewing audience. Look, you know and I know that horror fans are a very forgiving lot, but after you’ve been kicked in the balls a few times by the “slick cover art” con, you have to start recognizing that it smarts… can anyone here say Brain Damage Films!"
The Butcher: Tex Massacre writes: "In the end, plot points be dammed, even Dr. Frankenstein would have a helluva time trying to get his goon off the gurney."
