One of the best indie films I've seen in years is Scott Glosserman's Behind the Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon (review), which has been making its mark on festivals across the world. Word has it that the film might be showing at another festival this year, but we're yet to hear confirmation. Either way we've got some great news regarding the film's release, courtesy of the cats over at Fangoria. Read on for the skinny. The next great psycho horror slasher has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them.
"We haven’t closed the deal [yet],” Glosserman tells Fangoria, but an announcement of which companies will be handling the film is coming "really soon. We’re hoping for an early 2007 theatrical release in the States, either simultaneously or followed shortly by big-screen play all over the world. Generally there’s about a three-month window between the final theatrical showing and the DVD, so the disc will most likely be out in the first half of ‘07."
Even better, fans of the film will be glad to know the DVD will be jammed to the brim with extra features. “There’s so much stuff, because we shot a lot,” Glosserman explains to Fangoria. “The documentary part of the movie is very dialogue-intensive, so there’s a ton of dialogue that just couldn’t make it into the film. There are comedic moments and esoteric things that weren’t necessarily integral to the plot, but are nevertheless fun, that we’ll get to throw on the DVD. A couple of scenes in particular: There’s one with Scott Wilson, who plays Eugene [Leslie’s stalker mentor], where he’s describing all the injuries he has sustained in his career, and Leslie asks Eugene, ‘Well, how is it that you’re able to survive these things when they would prove fatal to the rest of us?’ Eugene goes into that, and it’s very funny."
He continues, “There’s also going to be a big making-of documentary; we got a lot of footage... Mount St. Helens erupted when we were location scouting, about 20 miles from us, and there was some funny stuff there. I did a video diary which will be infused into the making-of. Every night, I talked into the camera, and we’ll also include casting sessions and things like that. I’m sure we’ll do an audio commentary, and we may even have Leslie Vernon do one too, which would be very interesting.”
