Yesterday it was announced that James (Silence) Wan, co-creator of the Saw franchise, had signed on to direct Death Sentence for Hyde Park Entertainment and 20th Century Fox. Since we're extremely excited about the film, we decided to make a few calls and see if we could find out a little more about the project. Inside you'll find exclusive word directly from James Wan about this amazing revenge flick, which was penned by Ian Jeffers. The story centers on a father out for revenge after his family is attacked in a senseless and heinous gang-initiation crime. The father enacts a death sentence on each perpetrator involved with the crime. Read on for the skinny...
James Wan tells B-D exclusively:
Death Sentence is a throwback to the gritty, revenge thriller of the 70s- in tone with films such as Dirty Harry, Rolling Thunder, The French Connection and of course Death Wish (which was written by the same author of Death Sentence, Brian Garfield).
It's a story about a father, a white-collar office man, declaring war on the brutal gang that attacked his family. And the consequences that come with putting down the briefcase and picking up a double-barrelled shotgun.
Like SAW, i love stories where everyday characters are caught up in extraordinary situations. I love the what-do-you-do factor. Imagine if your brother was killed in a violent gangland killing, and your father went out and exacted vengeance...only now, the gang comes for him and the rest of your family...what do you all do?
It's a character study movie with brutal set-pieces and a shoot-out that is like the end of Taxi Driver, but times ten!
I'm approaching this film with the kind of raw and intense energy found in film-school, guerilla film-making. To me, this is a horror movie, but of the realistic kind."
