Exclusive: Ellis Talks 'Snakes on a Plane' with B-D!

In the five years that I've been running Bloody-Disgusting I have never come across a movie that is as obscurely hyped as New Line Cinema's upcoming horror/thriller Snakes on a Plane, which stars Samuel L. Jackson, Flex Alexander, Rachel Blanchard, Julianna Margulies, Nathan Phillips, Tygh Run Yan and David Koechner. When I think of "fan hype" I think of fan-made websites dedicated to upcoming films like Superman, Clerks II, X-Men: Last Stand and Spiderman 3 -- not Snakes on a Plane, or simply put "S.O.A.P." David R. Ellis' upcoming film, which hits theaters August 18th, has become the talk of the town seeing massive coverage in major mags such as Entertainment Weekly and Newsweek; the film is even being joked about on Letterman! Today B-D was lucky enough to get one of the first one-on-one interviews with Mr. Ellis since the mega-hype began and we are very excited to share the goodies with you. Inside you'll find a few tasty bits about the film from it's new "R" rating to the CGI development progress...

Being that we're Bloody-Disgusting, one of the most important questions is, what makes the film "R"? Ellis tells B-D exclusively, "The deaths are more violent and graphic. There is nudity – a couple trying to join the Mile-High Club – and the language is more explicit. Actually, Bob Shaye, the president of New Line, was the one who green-lighted the additions." All I can say is God bless Bob Shaye and the "Mile-High Club" (I plan on joining soon enough).

And after viewing the trailer, one question we've been seeing popping up all over the web was, were there real snakes used in the film? Ellis gives a detailed response, which actually makes me think the movie is going to look even better than I originally though, "Yes, we had over 500 real, non-venomous snakes as well as some CGI snakes. The trailer, which is currently making the rounds on the Internet, is rather rough. The shot of the woman with the snake coming out of her blouse needs tweaking as do a few others – when we’re finished with post, all of the snakes will be photo-real. Our visual effects teams, Hybrid, led by Erik Henry, and Asylum FX, are hard at work."

The film, which hits theaters August 18th, centers on a ruthless assassin who unleashes a crate full of lethal snakes aboard a packed passenger jet over the Pacific Ocean in order to eliminate a witness in protective custody. The rookie pilot and frightened passengers must band together to survive.
