Hatter M: The Looking Glass Wars
Comic Book Review
By Jessica Dwyer
Changing up Alice in Wonderland and delving into the many and varied ways the tale could be retold is always fun. Usually these retellings focus on Alice herself, but I always enjoy seeing those characters that don’t always get the star treatment come center stage.
In Frank Beddor and Liz Cavalier’s Hatter M: The Looking Glass Wars released by Desperado Publishing, we get to focus on The Mad Hatter…well sort of.
In this dark little gem, The Mad Hatter is not actually mad. He is a royal bodyguard for the Alyss, Princess of Wonderland. He is known as a Hatter, Hatter Madigan. After Alyss disappears he starts searching for her, winding up going through a portal that lands him in the middle of Paris, France in the year 1859.
The Hatter is also as much of a fighter as say Wolverine in this telling. He has blades at his wrists not to mention his most formidable weapon, his Hat. This hat would be the envy of Oddjob from Goldfinger. When used it morphs into a bladed weapon that cuts through enemies like a chainsaw, then morphs back into it’s debonair top hat shape and flies back to the hand of it’s wielder.
Wherever The Hatter goes, mystery and myth follow him. But he is determined, no matter what, to find Princess Alyss and bring her safely back home.
With art by Ben Templesmith, Hatter M is a beautiful read. With a touch cartoon and painted looks, he mixes together dark colors with an antique tint that suit the subject matter. Hatter is a very cool looking character, with his killer top hat and long trench coat. You don’t want to mess with him either, or make fun of his choice of head gear.
Why would this be something Bloody Disgusting readers would be interested in you might ask? Well, in the first issue we have the Hatters nemesis reanimate a bunch of corpses at his show and then gleefully watch as they eat his audience. Yes, this isn’t the Disney Alice by any means. This is a dark, DARK fantasy that has a black comic wit running through it, along with a healthy dose of blood.
Hatter M: The Looking Glass Wars is a great read that reminds me of the brilliance of Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentleman with its Victorian settings, and retelling of classic literature. Pick it up and enjoy, and don’t forget your hat.
