Variety reports:

Summit Entertainment has scored a Teutonic double by striking a first-look deal to sell movies from Constantin, and picking up international rights to "Adrift," an American thriller from Munich-based producer Orange Pictures.

The first title covered under the Constantin agreement will be the third installment in the "Resident Evil" franchise, titled "Resident Evil: Extinction," which is set to begin production in 2006. Russell Mulcahy will direct with Milla Jovovich reprising her starring role.

Summit's pact with Constantin formalizes a long-standing relationship between the two companies. Constantin founder Bernd Eichinger was one of Summit's original backers before the sales company was bought out by its management led by Patrick Wachsberger.

Summit is currently selling Eichinger's upcoming pet project "Perfume."

Under the new first-look deal, Summit will handle sales to all countries excluding North America, which Constantin will continue to handle itself, and German-speaking territories, where Constantin has its own distribution.

"Our long and successful history is the framework for our future collaborations," Wachsberger said. Constantin topper Martin Moszkowicz added: "Patrick and his team have consistently achieved, and often exceeded, our goals." Constantin is fortunate to have such an energetic, talented partner

Apart from signing on the dotted line with Constantin, Summit is selling world rights excluding German-speaking territories to "Adrift," which will premiere Friday in the European Film Market.

Produced by Dan Maag and Philip Schulz-Deyle of Orange in conjunction with Shotgun Pictures, the reality-thriller is helmed by German newcomer Hans Horn and stars an all-American ensemble cast including Erick Dane and Richard Speight Jr.

Based on true events, "Adrift" was shot in Malta but is set on the coast of Mexico where six long-time friends go on a cruise in a luxury yacht. Things go wrong when everybody jumps into the water, leaving only a baby on board, only to realize that they forgot to let down the ladder and there's no way to climb back onto the boat.

Wachsberger calls the film a " 'Lord of the Flies' in the water." Universum will distribute the movie in Germany.
