Saw Uncut Edition DVD Release Party

Last night in NYC, Lions Gate Films and Stuff Magazine held a DVD release party for the Saw Uncut Edition DVD that comes out next week. In actuality, it was really more of a promo party for Saw II – but after a few hypodermics full of Bloody Mary, who’s complaining?

James Wan (director), Leigh Whannell (writer/star), and Tobin Bell (the Jigsaw himself) from the original flick were on-hand to celebrate the release, as well as Franky G from the sequel, but most of the focus was on former New Kid and Saw II star Donnie Wahlberg, who affably posed for photos with cast and crew and mingled with the crowd. Lions Gate gave the partiers a sneak peak at the upcoming sequel by showing a scene in which an unlucky fellow finds himself in one of Jigsaw’s head-traps – this one is built like a crocodile’s mouth and will snap its iron maiden-like spikes closed on his head if he doesn’t find the key in time. The key is of course behind his own eye (as evidenced by some handily-provided x-rays) and he’s given a toolbox holding a lone scalpel with which to extract it. Will he “take the plunge” and trade his eye for his life? I guess we’ll have to wait and see when the flick opens on the 28th.

As for the Uncut DVD, its real selling point is the original short film that got Wan and Whannell the gig in the first place, as well as some gore that got sliced for the R rating (although I’ve seen it noted that the Uncut version of the film is actually shorter than the theatrical release, do to some additional editing).

Aside from the well-selected clip from the sequel, the highlight of the evening was probably the performance by Grinder Girl, a young lady who dresses in a metallic bustier which she then assaults with a power-sander, sending up a fountain of sparks. Nothing like the smell of burning to cap off a Tuesday night in Manhattan.
